Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
Mary of Egypt was a prostitute who live during the reign of Emperor Justinian (518-27). She went to Jerusalem from her home in Alexandria. She found herself curiously attracted to a group of Christian pilgrims waiting to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. She decided to follow them in. However, at the threshold of the Church, she suddenly found herself held back, powerless to enter, as if by some invisible force blocking her way. This act made her see herself, and convicted her of her many sins that barred her entry. She vowed to forsake her sinful life and seek her way to Christ through repentance. For forty years thereafter, she served as a nun in a monastery near the Jordan River. Many of her years were spent in retreat into the the wilderness surrounding the monastery. She became known as the "Saint of Repentance". The Fifth Sunday of Great Lent is dedicated to her as our example that it is never too late to repent. The time is now.
