I would like to address a topic this week – one that has been addressed in the past, but is nonetheless of crucial importance to the life and future of St. Demetrios – of the Stewardship Pledge. I have never really liked the term “church dues” because there really is no such thing as dues to a church. We are not a club; we are the Body of Christ.
A person is a member of the Body of Christ by virtue of their Baptism and their life in Christ. One could be a member of the Church “in good standing” and still be unable to contribute anything towards the building or sustaining of the work of the Church. God has never expected anything from anyone who does not have the financial ability to give. Only of those who are able. For this reason, we prefer the term “stewardship pledge.” Also acceptable is my “my church gift” or “my commitment.” Each of these terms has the connotation of a voluntary contribution.
When the Apostle Paul spoke to the church in Corinth, he said,
“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper (1 Cor. 16:2). This is the most God-pleasing way to give toward the work of the Church. Set aside in advance and give each week as we have prospered.
Having said this, know that the “Pledge Card” is a sign of our commitment. We are not asking for a specific amount, but that you do fill out a card. We say this now because, even as this is written, we are trying to negotiate ourselves out of the “Foreclosure Crisis” and into a new agreement with a different bank. The Bank would like a verifiable number of pledges, so not only will your pledge card signify your commitment to God’s Church, but also be an aid for us as we negotiate with the bank. (See the letter from the Parish Council below).
So, please, fill out a pledge card this Sunday. Help us survive as a vibrant parish. Thank you!
