PARISH COUNCIL UPDATES

At the Parish Council meeting of August 8th, the following was resolved:

* A General Assembly was scheduled for Sunday, August 25 immediately following the Divine Liturgy.  Agenda items will include an update on the mortgage for St. Demetrios and the Hellenic Center,  proposed 2020 budget, and appointment of Election and Audit Committees. A letter with the full agenda will be forthcoming this week.

* The date of the Fall Greek Festival was confirmed for Friday through Sunday, November 1 - 3. Robert Marakos has volunteered to chair the kitchen. We are seeking someone to serve as overall chairman. If you would be willing to do so, please contact the Council President, Tom Coghill.

* The Friday Fish Fry should continue for the benefit of the Church as soon as feasible.

* Thank you is extended to all who recently responded with pledge cards. This is helpful in our planning our budget and in securing a loan for the future of the church and hall.

CHURCH SCHOOL

The first day of classes will be on Sunday, September 8th. Lessons begin immediately following Holy Communion and continue until 12:15 p.m. We ask all parents to support this effort to give your children religious education and please do not ask for them to leave before the lesson is over. Thank you.

Looking ahead to the next Church School Year, we are looking for dedicated teachers. If you are able to do so, please contact Elli Williams at 757-784-7856.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eighth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:11-18

At that time, Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that He had said these things to her.

Eighth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Tone. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Grave Tone.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

8th Sunday of Matthew

Euplus the Holy Martyr & Archdeacon of Cantania

This Martyr was from Catania in Sicily and contested during the reign of Diocletian. He presented himself of his own accord to Calvisianus the Governor, who put him to exceedingly harsh torments. As Euplus was on the rack, Calvisianus commanded him to worship Mars, Apollo, and Aesculapius; he answered he worshipped the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He was beheaded in the year 304.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Tone

O Lord by Your sacred Cross You abolished death, and granted unto the thief blessed paradise. The Myrrh-bearers ceased lamenting and turned to joy. The apostles did preach the Good News at Your command, that You had risen from the dead O Christ Our God, bestowing Your mercy upon the world ever more.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Transfiguration in the Grave Tone

You were transfigured upon the mountain, O Christ our God, showing to Your disciples Your glory as much as they could bear. Do also in us, sinners though we be, shine Your everlasting light, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Giver of light. Glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Tone

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For being twelve, they had five loaves only and two fishes; so secondary to them were the things of the body: so did they cling to the things spiritual only. And not even that little did they hold fast, but gave up even it when asked.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 49 on Matthew 14, 4th Century

The miracle of the bread revealed the One through Whom the soil, when planted with seed, multiplies. What was done invisibly, once brought to light, proclaimed Who it is that always works invisibly. It was not only at that time that Jesus with five loaves does many great things. In the world He was not idle or inactive but was always at work feeding everyone and taking nothing for Himself. Because He was unknown, therefore, He came feeding, eating and feeding, so that through those things that are seen, He Who was unseen might appear.
Eusebius of Emesa
Homily 8.12. Taken from: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. Vol: Matthew 14-28. Intervarsity Press, 2002, p. 9.

From the Parish Council

Dear Friends in Christ,

The past year has been difficult for St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. As many of you know, Towne Bank began foreclosure proceedings last January. Our Priest, Fr. Milton, continued to serve despite the fact that we were unable to pay him for more than 6 months. The good news is that several of our benefactors have been quietly negotiating with Towne Bank behind the scenes. The last remaining hurdle in these negotiations is the very sad fact that we only have 40 signed stewardship cards. Our prospective new mortgage lender insists that we demonstrate a much higher level of commitment before they will agree to the terms being negotiated. Unless we are able to substantially increase this number we face the very real possibility of losing our church in the next week or two.

We humbly ask for your support for this final effort. Please complete the attached stewardship card and return it to us no later than this Sunday, July 28. You may email your card back to me (tom.coghillcbo@icloud.com) or to Charlie Stayton (cstayton@cox.net) or you may drop you card off at church this Sunday. We understand that many of you prefer to give anonymously and for that we are grateful. The fact remains, however, that Towne Bank is demanding that we produce substantially more than 40 stewardship commitments. Please do not abandon us!

Yours in Service,

Tom Coghill, Parish Council President

Charlie Stayton, Stewardship Committee Chair
