Message from Fr. Gianulis

HOPE IN GOD

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my help and my God.  (Psalm 42:11)

Psalm 42 and 43 were written when David was separated from Jerusalem. He laments at not being able to praise God in the Temple. During this time of his depression and separation from God, he recalls the past when his relationship with God was good and he rejoiced in participating in the worship processions in Jerusalem. The writer’s soul is cast down, but he enjoins it to hope in God, for, he says, “I shall again praise him, my help and my God.”

His lament is our lament. We long to praise God in His sanctuary once more; we want to gather together as a community; we want to pray together and receive at the Lord’s Table again; we are concerned that even during Holy Week we may not be able to go to Church. Like David, though, we remain faithful that we “shall again praise Him” and we know that He is our “help and my God” even – especially – during this time of separation, isolation and depression.

We are people of hope—people of the resurrected Christ. Throughout the Bible, hope is revealed as the most helpful condition of life, the most important attribute we hold and that which can even restore health and sustain life even in the starkest of circumstances. Even Job in all his suffering does not curse hope as a cruel tantalizer but laments the fact that his days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and could come to their end without hope.  Worse than his pain is the prospective loss of hope for a return to health. (Job 7:6-7)

The key to understanding the book of Job is the realization that our hope transcends the here and now. Apart from and ever-present God, we in fact have no hope. Job felt this way. He felt abandoned by God. Yet, as Christians, we are not abandoned. We are not alone. Our God became man. He was, is and always shall be with us. We believe in an ever present, an omnipotent and omnipresent God. He is always with us...even when we cannot go to Church.

St. Paul speaking about the body says, “For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Cor. 5:1) This same verse can be applied to the “earthly tent” that is the brick and mortar church building, but the “house not made with hands” is still there. God’s Church is His people. God’s Spirit is “everywhere present and fills all things.” (Prayer to the Holy Spirit).

Upcoming Divine Services and Holy Days

LENTEN SERVICES SUSPENDED

As per the directive from the Ecumenical Patriarch, all worship services are suspended through March 29th. However, Governor Northam has issued an Executive Order prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 at a time through April 23rd. As such, unless things change, we will continue to live stream Sunday Divine Liturgy.  

We will reassess with updated guidance from His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos, the state, and federal authorities as it is received.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20.

BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." Sunday of St. John Climacus

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on March 30, where his biography may be found. He is celebrated today because his book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, is a sure guide to the ascetic life, written by a great man of prayer experienced in all forms of the monastic polity; it teaches the seeker after salvation how to lay a sound foundation for his struggles, how to detect and war against each of the passions, how to avoid the snares laid by the demons, and how to rise from the rudimental virtues to the heights of Godlike love and humility. It is held in such high esteem that it is universally read in its entirety in monasteries during the Great Fast.

The Holy Martyrs Jonas and Barachesius

As for the holy Martyrs Jonas and Barachesius, they were monks from Persia who lived in the reign of Sapor II, King of Persia from 325 to 379. These Saints found nine Christians in prison suffering for their faith, and comforted them, encouraging them to stand fast till the end, which they did, and received the crown of martyrdom. Because of this, Saints Jonas and Barachesius also were seized, and commanded to worship the fire, the sun, and the water. When they refused, Jonas, among other tortures, had his hands and feet cut off, was crushed in a device that broke his bones, and was sawn asunder. Barachesius was dragged naked over thorns, his whole body was pierced with sharp reeds and then broken in the same device employed upon Jonas, and when boiling pitch was poured down his throat, he gave up his soul into the hands of God.

Mark, Bishop of Arethusa

Saint Mark was Bishop of Arethusa in Syria. In the days of Saint Constantine the Great, Saint Mark, moved with divine zeal, destroyed a temple of the idols and raised up a church in its stead. When Julian the Apostate reigned, in 361, as the pagans were now able to avenge the destruction of their temple, Saint Mark, giving way to wrath, hid himself; but when he saw that others were being taken on his account, he gave himself up. Having no regard to his old age, they stripped him and beat his whole body, cast him into filthy sewers, and pulling him out, had children prick him with their iron writing-pens. Then they put him into a basket, smeared him with honey and a kind of relish of pickled fish, and hung him up under the burning sun to be devoured by bees and wasps. But because he bore this so nobly, his enemies repented, and unloosed him.

You should be ready each day to receive all kinds of afflictions, regarding them as your release from many sins; and you should thank God for them. Through them you may acquire a close and unimpeachable communion with God, in accordance with Saint Paul's words: 'Afflictions produce patient endurance; patient endurance, strength of character; and strength of character, hope; and hope does not disappoint' (Rom. 5:3-5).
