Words to Live By

This Sunday's Gospel is reading shares Christ's teaching on the "Golden Rule," how we Christians ougt to live in relation to one another. This week, I wish to share with you reflections about this from two inspirational, contemporary and "orthodox" Christian great minds: C.S. Lewis and Henry Nouwen.

“The rule for all of us is perfectly simple.  Do not waste time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him. If you injure someone you dislike, you will find yourself disliking him more. If you do him a good turn, you will find yourself disliking him less. There is, indeed, one exception. If you do him a good turn, not to please God and obey the law of charity, but to show him what a fine forgiving chap you are, and to put him in your debt, and then sit down to wait for his ‘gratitude’, you will probably be disappointed. (People are not fools: they have a very quick eye for anything like showing off, or patronage.) But whenever we do good to another self, just because it is a self, made (like us) by God, and desiring its own happiness as we desire ours, we shall have learned to love it a little more or, at least, to dislike it less.”

Upcoming Divine Services and Holy Days

WE ARE OPEN FOR IN PERSON WORSHIP

For those who have not been vaccinated, we ask that you please wear a mask. If you have, we still encourage masks be worn for divine services for your safety and for the safety of others.

Holy Communion is being distributed by using seperate spoon for each individual.

Great Vespers, 6 p.m. on Monday, October 25th, followed by a reception welcoming our guest priests and their faithful.

Orthros, 8:45 a.m. Divine Liturgy, 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26th.

GREEK FESIVAL VOLUNTEER SIGN UP

Volunteering in advance and making a commitment makes the work of the organizers and chairmen of the Festival so much easier. Please sign up. Sign up is going slower than expected. A sign up board is posted in the anteroom of the Church. Here are some details to consider as you make your commitment to help.

Some volunteer slots are filled but about 3/4 of available slots are not. Each day, Friday through Sunday, will be divided into 2 shifts of 5 hours each. First shift runs from 11:00 to 16:00. Second shift runs from 16:00 to 21:00. 

  • A la cart servers (need 6 volunteers per shift)
  • Bar (need 2 volunteers per shift)
  • Bookstore (need 2 volunteers per shift, am/pm shifts are now filled for all 3 days)
  • Cashiers (need 3 volunteers per shift)
  • Loukoumades servers (need 1 volunteer per shift)
  • Runners (need 6 volunteers per shift)
  • Signs (placing and removing, suggest 4 people)

MONTHLY SPECIAL TRAY FOR MISSIONS

To error is human, to forgive is divine. Last Sunday, though on his mind and in the plan, Fr. Gianulis forgot to pass the Mission Tray, so this Sunday we will correct the mistake and our monthly Mission Tray. The collection will go to the Fr. Sav Memorial Mission Walk. The proceeds of the walk go to IOCC, OCMC, our local seminarians at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, and local charities. If you cannot be here Sunday and wish to support, you may send your check to St. Demetrios earmarked for Mission Walk. Thank you.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION FROM A MONK-PRIEST FROM ST. CATHERINES

Fr. Makarios an ordained priest/monk of St. Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai will be visiting St. Demetrios. The monastery is the oldest, continuing monastery in the world with fantastic icons and a rich heritage. We will be blessed to host the third monk in seniority from the monastery who will serve liturgy and after liturgy, we will host a light lunch and he will offer a video presentation and discussion. When? Sunday, November 21st. Mark your calendars now.

Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Dionysios the Areopagite

This Saint was from Athens, a learned man, and a member of the famous judicial court of Mars Hill (in Greek Aeros Pagos, hence the name Areopagite (see Acts 17:19-34). When Saint Paul preached in Athens, he was one of the first there to believe in Christ, and, according to some, became the first bishop of that city. Others say -- and this may be more probable--that he was the second Bishop of Athens, after Saint Hierotheus, whom Dionysios calls his friend and teacher "after Paul" (On the Divine Names, 3:2). With Saint Hierotheus he was also present at the Dormition of the most holy Theotokos; the Doxasticon of the Aposticha for the service of the Dormition is partly taken from a passage in Chapter III of On the Divine Names. According to ancient tradition, he received a martyr's end (according to some, in Athens itself) about the year 96.

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Tone

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Thou didst draw from the Chosen Vessel ineffable mysteries; and having kept the Faith, thou didst finish a like course, O Hieromartyr Dionysios. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

    He who truly wishes to believe in God must be lifted above himself, his mind, and even the whole world. For this reason, the value of faith is considered higher than the value of man.
