Message from Fr. Gianulis

Take Up Your Cross and Follow

“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34)

We will hear these words of our Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday in the gospel lesson of the Divine Liturgy. These words are recorded in three of the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke.  Only in Luke, however, is there a slight but significant difference. One word: “daily.” “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me daily.” (Luke 9:23)

We are not Christians just once a week, on Sunday. We are Christians every day and our call is to take up our cross daily.

This Sunday, we commemorate the Veneration of the Holy Cross. It is a reminder that we are midway through Great Lent. Our focus as we continue the journey through Great Lent should not be on what we have “given up” but on the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. He is our strength.

Our faith is in Jesus Christ, who was crucified for our salvation. He denied Himself and took up His Cross, but He also challenged us to take up our crosses as well. In other words, His is a call to sacrificial love, sacrificial giving, sacrificial commitment, and sacrificial devotion to Him. Luke adds: “daily.”

His Cross saves us. His is a Cross of love and sacrifice. It is His Cross that gives meaning to our very existence. To possess His Cross, we must take up our cross and follow. Follow Him all the way to the Cross...daily.

William & Mary Rideshare

We are truly blessed in this community with a large group of William & Mary students who attend church.  Our parish men's group, the St. Demetrios Legion, is in the process of compiling a list of parishioners who are available to drive our students to and from services.  In Great Lent, the need for providing rides for the students has greatly increased.  If you have an interest in supporting this worthwhile ministry, please email Nathan Liu, Alex Podyachev, and/or Tom Jouvanis at the following email addresses: nsliu@wm.edu, alexastro@cox.net, and tajouvanis@aol.com.  God bless you for your support.

We have new books for both adults and children.  There will be more Lenten and Pascha items coming in the weeks ahead.”

CHURCH LENDING LIBRARY

The Church’s Library is a wonderful resource for learning more about many topics. There are many interesting and worthwhile books relevant to Orthodoxy for parishioners to check out, enjoy and learn from. The can be easily checked out. Connie Pavlides developed a system for checking-out and checking-in the borrowed books that is a straight forward and self-explanatory.
If someone would be willing to take over maintaining the library, Connie would be most appreciative as it is hard for her to get out too much any more. Please let Fr. Gianulis know your willingness to help. She will happily train you.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Seventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:1-10

On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Seventh Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6.

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."

Plagal Second Tone.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Sunday of the Holy Cross

Sunday of the Holy Cross

With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.

Matrona
March 27

Martyr Matrona of Thessalonica

This martyr was the servant of a certain Jewish woman named Pantilla, the wife of the Governor of Thessalonica. When Matrona refused to follow her mistress into the synagogue Pantilla beat her so severly that she died in a few days, and thus received the crown of her confession.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Tone

By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. * To the robber You opened Paradise. * The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, * and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all * that You had risen, O Christ our God, * and granted the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion for Sun. of the Holy Cross in the First Tone

Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Tone

To you, defender and commander in a time of war, I, your City, offer gratitude for victory, for you rescued me from suff'rings, O Theotokos. Since the power you possess is unassailable, from all dangers I entreat you to deliver me, that I may cry to you: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.

Wisdom of the Fathers

"I force not, I compel not, but each one I make lord of his own choice; wherefore also I say, 'If any man will.' For to good things do I call you, not to things evil, or burdensome; not to punishment and vengeance, that I should have to compel.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century

The key to knowledge is the humility of Christ. The door of the Kingdom of Heaven is open, not to those who only know in their learned minds the mysteries of faith and the commandments of their Creator, but to those who have progressed far enough to live by them.
St. Bede the Venerable
Unknown, 8th century

To deny oneself means to give up one's bad habits; to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad thoughts and desires; to suppress every evil thought; to avoid occasions of sin; not to desire or to do anything out of self-love, but to do everything out of love for God. To deny oneself, according to St. Paul means "to be dead to sin. . . but alive to God."
St. Innocent of Alaska
The Lenten Spring, SVS Press, p. 147, 19th Century
