Message from Fr. Gianulis

Me_and_athan

Lent is Coming Soon

Great Lent is just around the corner. How do we know? Because the Triodion begins on Sunday.

The Triodion is the Liturgical book that guides us in the order (rubrics), services, hymns and commemorations of the pre-Pascha period. This liturgical guide book is divided into three parts: Pre-Lent, Great Lent, and Holy Week.

The Pre-Lenten period is characterized primarily by the successive four Sunday Gospel lessons. Each of the four Sundays has a theme that guides us into our lenten journey. These are:

1. The Parable of the Publican & Pharisee. The theme is humility. Humility is crucial in beginning our relationship with God. Humiliy's opposite is pride, and "pride precedes the fall." (Proverbs 16:18) We are called to view ourselves honestly and without pride, as we truly are.  We are all sinners before God.

2. The Parable of the Prodigal Son. The theme is repentance and forgiveness. It is about the son who wanders far from home, comes to himself and decides to return to his father seeking forgiveness. His father is overjoyed at his return, teaching us that no matter how far we are estranged from God, He will always welcome us home.  And it is also about his older brother who is resentful. We should not judge those who have done wrong, but celebrate their return.

3. Judgment Sunday. The gospel theme is the Last Judgment of Christ, when He returns to judge the earth. Will will be judged on how we treat one another. We are called to see Christ in every human being and serve those in need by doing for them, not simply intending to do, but by actually doing, to bring Christ’s embrace to them.

4. Forgiveness Sunday. The gospel theme is forgiveness of others who have wronged us, and of reconciliation so as to prepare for the personal renewal with God during Great Lent. A sub-theme is that of Adam’s exile from paradise. We are to identify ourselves with Adam, lamenting our loss of the beauty, dignity, and delight of our original creation, while mourning our corruption in sin.

FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

A LETTER FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL

Dear Fellow Parishioners

This past week Father Gianulis and the members of the parish council met the chancellor of the Metropolis of NJ, Father Christopher Oikonomides.  It was his first visit to our parish and he came to express the pastoral love of the archbishop and the desire to help St. Demetrios move forward as a parish as a full chartered and vital member of the archdiocese.

The parish council shared our history and the challenges that we have overcome.  The chancellor was greatly impressed by the beauty of our church and the diversity and pan-Orthodox character of the parish.  He developed a heart-felt appreciation of our accomplishments and remaining challenges and was very impressed by the obvious commitment of our parishioners to the parish.

We had a frank discussion about our current financial plan and becoming chartered by the archdiocese.  We reached an agreement with the chancellor on a path forward for chartering our St. Demetrios parish.  Our target is to submit our charter application in May.  The archdiocese would review and approve our application before the end of the year.  The chancellor confirmed that we were very well organized and already operating with the discipline of a chartered parish.

Once our charter is approved, we would work collaboratively with the archdiocese in developing a plan for phasing in an assessment that would take full account of our financial status.  The assessment that would start in 2024 at the earliest and possibly later.  The archdiocese wants us to be chartered.  They will be patient with an assessment and appreciate our collective efforts and generosity in getting to where we are today.

We had a very nice dinner with the chancellor and ended our evening by extending an invitation to Father Oikonomides, Bishop Apostolos, and the Archbishop Elpidophoros to our Ten-Year Anniversary celebration that we are planning for early next year.

Please reach out to me if you would like to learn more about the meeting.

Thank you for your support and God bless the parish of St. Demetrios.

Athanasios (Tom) Jouvanis

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE

We are continuing to add Stewards of St. Demetrios! There are 30 stewardship forms received totaling $75,000.00. Our goal for 2023 is 100 stewards raising $200,000.00.

A stewardship form reminds us to prayerfully focus on our giving to support St. Demetrios Church, our Spiritual Home. Stewardship forms also serve a very practical purpose to support the Parish Council in making well-informed planning and financial decisions in 2023, as well as, providing needed support for a long term loan to replace the our current short term loan of approximately $1.5 million.

And last, but not least, stewardship forms ensure our personal information such as phone numbers, home address, e-mail contacts, and family information are current.

Please remember to complete and return your 2023 Stewardship Form as soon as possible. Mail or bring your stewardship form on Sunday or fill one out during coffee. Also remind friends and family to complete their form.

Thank you for your effort and support of St. Demetrios!

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

First Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Matthew 28:16-20

At that time, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen."

First Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Tone. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 3:10-15.

TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

First Tone.

Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today
The Reading is from Luke 18:10-14

The Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today

Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today

The Pharisees were an ancient and outstanding sect among the Jews known for their diligent observance of the outward matters of the Law. Although, according to the word of our Lord, they "did all their works to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5), and were hypocrites (ibid. 23: 13, 14, 15, etc.), because of the apparent holiness of their lives they were thought by all to be righteous, and separate from others, which is what the name Pharisee means. On the other hand, Publicans, collectors of the royal taxes, committed many injustices and extortions for filthy lucre's sake, and all held them to be sinners and unjust. It was therefore according to common opinion that the Lord Jesus in His parable signified a virtuous person by a Pharisee, and a sinner by a Publican, to teach His disciples the harm of pride and the profit of humble-mindedness.

Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Forty-day Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue. This present week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read today, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights.

All foods are allowed the week that follows this Sunday.

Agatha
February 05

Agatha the Martyr

This Martyr, who was from Panormus (that is, Palermo) or perhaps Catania of Sicily, was a most comely and chaste virgin. After many exceedingly harsh torments, she gave up her spirit in prison at Catania in 251, because she did not consent to the seductions of Quintian, the Governor of Sicily. At her burial, an Angel placed a stone tablet on her grave inscribed with the words, "A righteous mind, self-determining, honor from God, the deliverance of her father-land." The following year this was fulfilled when Mount Etna erupted, spewing forth violent fire from which Catania was manifestly saved by Saint Agatha's prayers. The holy Martyr Agatha, the protectress and chief patroness of Sicily, is, with perhaps the exception of Saint Agnes of Rome, the most highly venerated Virgin Martyr of the West. Saint Damasus, Pope of Rome, and Saint Ambrose of Milan both wrote in praise of her.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Tone

The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, * and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. * You rose on the third day, O Lord * and Savior, granting life unto the world. * For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-giver: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; * glory to Your eternal rule; * glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Presentation in the First Tone

Lady full of grace, rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, for Christ our God, the Sun of righteousness has risen from you and He illumined those in darkness. And you, righteous Elder, be glad in heart, receiving in your embraces the One who liberates our souls and bestows on us the Resurrection.

Apolytikion for the Church in the Third Tone

The world has found in you a great champion in time of peril, as you emerged the victor in routing the barbarians. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios, imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium, in like manner, holy one, great Martyr Demetrios, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His great mercy.

Seasonal Kontakion in the First Tone

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

Wisdom of the Fathers

If there is a moral quality almost completely disregarded and even denied today, it is indeed humility. The culture in which we live constantly instills in us the sense of pride, of self-glorification, and of self-righteousness ... Even our churches - are they not imbued with that same spirit of the Pharisee? Do we not want our every contribution, every 'good deed,' all the we do 'for the Church' to be acknowledged, praised, publicized? ... How does one become humble? The answer, for a Christian, is simple: by contemplating Christ..."
Fr. Alexander Schmemann
Great Lent, pp. 19-20., 20th Century

It is possible for those who have come back again after repentance to shine with much lustre, and oftentimes more than those who have never fallen at all, I have demonstrated from the divine writings. Thus at least both the publicans and the harlots inherit the kingdom of Heaven, thus many of the last are placed before the first.
