Message from Fr. Gianulis

Me_and_athan

Inspiration from Mary

On Saturday, we celebrate the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the Blessed Virgin Mary whom we affectionately refer to as Panagia, All-Holy. There are two verses from the Gospel of the Feast that have helped me throughout my life:

Fear not, for nothing will be impossible with God.

And,

Behold: I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to Thy Word.
(Luke 1: 37-38).

This first is about faith. It has helped me trust God no matter the circumstances in which I find myself, or the problems I got myself into. Faith in God has always seen me through. Mary trusted in God’s Word and showed the world that faith can change even the course of history. Fear not. Know that God is in control. If something is meant to be or even if it is not, God will see us through it no matter what. Trust.

The second verse speaks directly to me. It teaches me to say “Yes” even if it doesn’t make sense or goes against my thinking or plan. It reassures me that His plan will guide me, not mine. When we worry or are afraid of the future—job, bills, career, home, family; whatever it might be—we should take inspiration from the Blessed Virgin Mary’s response, “Yes.” The struggle is really against our own will, ego and stubbornness, so Mary inspires me to stop struggling against God and say “Yes.”

When we say our “Yes!” to God, whether for a big life change, in a short prayer for a faithful day, or to devote our time to actively serving others, He will provide for us. When we become a willing instrument of His Grace, we die to our selfishness and worry, to become a better apostle of Christ in our community.

Announcements

Greek Independence Day Celebration

You don't have to be Greek to celebrate a national victory over tyrany and oppression. March 25th is such a special day for all of us as we celebrate both the Feast of the Annunciation and Greek Independence Day.

Image ResultAfter liturgy, let's all go and gather in Colonial Williamsburg where we will commemorate the day, similar to what we did last summer in praying for the freedom of Ukraine.  We have confirmation that the Marquis de Laffayette (Mark Schneider) will be joining us for our event. Meet at 12:30PM on March 25 near the fire pit/picnic area on Duke of Gloucester Street to celebrate Greek Independence Day.  It would be great fun for those of our young ones who have Greek costumes to wear in celebration of their heritage. Please, come join us and start a new tradition.

From Our Sunday School

  • The children of St. Demetrios Sunday school have embarked on a lenten mission to help those affected by the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria. We are reaching out to ask for your support and help. Located in the bookstore is a box where we are collecting monetary donations for the cause. In addition, some of the students have chosen to use their talents by making bracelets. These can be purchased in the bookstore for a donation. We thank you for your generosity.
  • On April 8th, Lazarus Saturday, we will have a pancake breakfast hosted by our Sunday School after liturgy. Following this, there will be community palm folding. Please join us for fellowship, and to learn how to fold the palm crosses.
  • Don’t forget to bring your children to the Easter egg hunt hosted by our Sunday School, on Pascha Sunday (April 16) directly after the Agape Vespers Service.

“Kandalia” - Luminaries to Light our Path

Let us light the processional pathway for the EPITAPHION on HOLY and GREAT FRIDAY evening.  Please consider purchasing a KANDALIA /LUMINARY in memory of, in honor of, or for the health of your loved ones. Your loved one's names will be written on the luminary and placed along the processional pathway of the Epitaphion on Good Friday. Those names will also be commemorated in the Divine Liturgy on Holy Saturday morning.

$10/Each LUMINARY - One individual name or one family name per LUMINARY. Proceeds will go to the flower fund for Great Lent, Holy Week, Epitaphios, and Easter lillies.

To place your order:  Please see the order form flyer below and return to Linda Jouvanis during Coffee Hour. Please make checks payable to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.  All orders must be received by PALM SUNDAY, April 9th. THANK YOU!

Festival Preparations

This past week we prepared spanakopitas and tiropites for our spring festival. This coming week on Wednesday, March 29th, we will be preparing koulouria and kourambiethes.  Please come at 10am.  Many hands make the work go faster.

Flowers for Holy Week

All who wish are welcome to come help decorate the kouvouklion/sepulcher on Good Friday. Show up at 9:00 a.m.

Thank you to all who have made contributions for Lenten flower decorations. We gratefully also accept donations for the flowers for Holy Week, the Epitaphios, and Easter Lillies.

AED TRAINING

In case you have not noticed, we have an automated external defibrillator (AED) situated in a good spot between the sanctuary and the Hellenic Center for emergencies. However, we all need to know how to use it.

York County is offering AED training for St. Demetrios Church. No one needs medical or other experience. The classes will be in the daytime or evening. We need to get a list of those interested and a preference for day or evening class. Please let Mike Thompson know your or anyone else’s interest by email at churchoffice@stdemva.com

COFFEE FELLOWSHIP

Please consider hosting our Sunday Coffee Fellowship after the Divine Liturgy. It is most appreciated. To sign up, simply follow the link: Coffee Hour.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eighth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:11-18

At that time, Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb, and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus has lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni," which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and she told them that He had said these things to her.

Eighth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Tone. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20.

BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Plagal Fourth Tone.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. John Climacus
The Reading is from Mark 9:17-31

At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."

Saints and Feasts

Climicus
March 26

Sunday of St. John Climacus

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on March 30, where his biography may be found. He is celebrated today because his book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, is a sure guide to the ascetic life, written by a great man of prayer experienced in all forms of the monastic polity; it teaches the seeker after salvation how to lay a sound foundation for his struggles, how to detect and war against each of the passions, how to avoid the snares laid by the demons, and how to rise from the rudimental virtues to the heights of Godlike love and humility. It is held in such high esteem that it is universally read in its entirety in monasteries during the Great Fast.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Fourth Tone

You descended from on high, O compassionate One, and condescended to be buried for three days, so that from the passions You might set us free. Our life and resurrection, O Lord, glory be to You.

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. John Climacus in the Plagal Fourth Tone

With the rivers of your tears, you have made the barren desert fertile. Through sighs of sorrow from deep within you, your labors have borne fruit a hundred-fold. By your miracles you have become a light, shining upon the world. O John, our Holy Father, pray to Christ our God, to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Tone

To you, defender and commander in a time of war, I, your City, offer gratitude for victory, for you rescued me from suff'rings, O Theotokos. Since the power you possess is unassailable, from all dangers I entreat you to deliver me, that I may cry to you: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.

Wisdom of the Fathers

On our temptation to be zealous for falsehoods: "People have such a love for truth that when they happen to love something else, they want it to be the truth; and because they do not wish to be proven wrong, they refuse to be shown their mistake. And so, they end up hating the truth for the sake of the object which they have come to love instead of the truth."
St. Augustine

Seest thou how He now proceeds to lay beforehand in them the foundation of His doctrine about fasting? ... See, at any rate, how many blessings spring from them both. For he that is praying as he ought, and fasting, hath not many wants, and he that hath not many wants, cannot be covetous; ... he that is not covetous, will be also more disposed for almsgiving. He that fasts is light, and winged, and prays with wakefulness, and quenches his wicked lusts, and propitiates God, and humbles his soul when lifted up. Therefore even the apostles were almost always fasting.
