“The Antikythera Mechanism”
A Lecture by
Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos
Thursday, April 11, 2019
at the Hellenic Library
15741 S. Woodruff Ave Suite F, Bellflower, CA 90706
7:00 pm Social Hour (coffee and deserts)
7:30 pm Lecture followed by Questions and Answers Session
Free Admission
Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos has studied how and why the Greeks built this awesome astronomical computer. It predicted the eclipses of the Sun and the Moon and had an accurate calendar that tied the most important cultural events of the Greeks with the workings of the cosmos.
This device worked with gears, being a product of the scientific technology of the Alexandrian Era. It was probably built in Rhodes where the great astronomer Hipparchos had his workshop. But in addition to the astronomical ideas of Hipparchos, the computer also mirrored the science and philosophy of Aristotle, Eudoxos, Euclid, Ktesibios and Archimedes.
This is a power point presentation illustrated by dozens of beautiful slides showing the evolution of Greek science and technology in ancient Greece and its influence in the West.
This event is part of “Open Forum”, «Ελεύθερο Βήμα» lectures at the Hellenic Library, where people can express their views and discuss them in public.
Space is limited, so pleaseRSVP
