Prayer

O my most holy Lady Theotokos, through thy holy and all-powerful prayers banish from me, thy lowly and wretched servant, despondency, forgetfulness, folly, carelessness, and all filthy, evil, and blasphemous thoughts from my wretched heart and my darkened mind.  Quench the flame of my passions also, for I am poor and wretched, and deliver me from many and cruel memories and deeds, and free me from all their evil effects.
For blessed art thou by all generations, and glorified is thy most honorable name unto the ages of ages.  Amen.

From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from the chapter “The Years After the War” from the book “Papa-Dimitri, the Man of God”. . .

Faithful relatives:  “The following account is about a young woman from Platanos, who from childhood had fallen into many carnal sins and had completely turned away from God and the Church. Two months earlier, this young woman began living with a fifty-four year old man. The Righteous Judge, however, awaited her repentance.

On August 6, 1958, the woman became possessed with unclean spirits. These demons would beat her frequently and she would scream out wildly in her torment. She could not see, hear, or recognize anyone; it was as if she were in another world.

Two days later, her relatives called me to read a prayer over her. Upon my doing so, however, she did not respond. Then they asked for the icon of the Holy Archangels to be brought to her. She herself later confessed that when the icon arrived, a radiant young man with a sword appeared to her saying, “Don’t be afraid. I will deliver you from this. But you must repent and cease doing those things you have been doing so far!”

He continued, “I will protect you, but you must repent and proclaim by your actions that the Church is a living religion for everyone to see!” And immediately - truly a great wonder! - she became well and came to her senses.

The woman indeed repented and told everyone what she saw and suffered. She kept saying, “Believe in God and in all His Saints! Believe especially in the grace of the Archangels - they have great power and can accomplish every good thing!” When I read a prayer over her on another occasion, she drew closer to kiss my hand, and thanked the Archangels for their protection.”

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Tone. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Fourth Tone.

Fourth Tone.
Verse:

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Sunday after Holy Cross

Sunday after Holy Cross

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone

Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Holy Cross in the First Tone

Save O Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to the faithful over their adversaries and protect Your commonwealth by the power of Your Cross.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Tone

Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard.
