From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from the book “The Garden of the Holy Spirit- Elder Iakovos of Evia”. Since the first publishing of this book, we have had the glorification of Elder Iakovos as a Saint of the Orthodox Church, so we may find newer editions titled “The Garden of the Holy Spirit- Saint Iakovos of Evia. Saint Iakovos, the Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Saint David the Elder of Evia, Greece, passed away while performing the sacrament of Confession on November 21, 1991, completing that month seventy-one years of life.”. . .

“By the end of the first week of November (1991), the respite was over. From then on, every moment turned into martyrdom. Despite his bodily suffering, he strove to keep vigil and pray. Prayer- incessant prayer- was the only thing he asked from God. God might well have allowed all those diseases to afflict the elder, but He had also bestowed upon him abundant strength to pray. The elder prayed fervently, deeply experiencing and living the joy of the Resurrection. Many times he would shed tears of joy and gratitude to God. The monks who passed his cell at night or in the morning on their way to the service saw him shedding abundant tears, yet his overall expression was that of gladness. A young monk was alarmed the first time he saw the elder in that condition and asked him: “Elder, are you all right? Are you in pain?” What could the God-seer answer? How could he explain to the young shoot of the angelic life the gifts God had given him? “No, my child! It’s only that I was just concelebrating with saints and angels. In sanctuaries that human words cannot describe!”

He could not offer theological explanations, but his very mien demonstrated his direct, living contact with God. He never entertained any thoughts about preaching, but he was himself a living sermon. Anyone possessing spiritual eyes and a wakeful heart could see in him a manifestation of God’s presence and divine energies on earth.

His words and his counsels were plain and practical- no analyses or elaborations. He used short phrases, often elliptic, even incomplete. But to anyone who got to know him, it was soon apparent that any words were, in fact, superfluous: it was sufficient to gaze at the elder to benefit one’s soul. Indeed, it was a rare, holy pleasure, a blessing from God.

The above does not mean that his words were in any way deficient. On the contrary, they possessed divine power and penetrating ability that comforted and enlightened the hearts of his listeners. It was no coincidence that all were eager to drink in every word he said. The grace filling the elder’s soul imparted in his words a divine breath that touched the human soul. Ultimately, a word has no beneficial effect in itself: it all depends on who utters it- as is the case with the words of the Gospel, which had great power exactly because they came out of the divine mouth of the Lord."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Tone. Luke 1: 46-48.
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:1-7.

BRETHREN, the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

Third Tone.

Third Tone.

Gospel Reading

The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple
The Reading is from Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28

At that time, Jesus entered a village; and a woman called Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve you alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!" But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

The Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Tone

Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead.

Apolytikion for Entry of the Theotokos in the Fourth Tone

Today is the prelude of God's good will and the heralding of the salvation of mankind. In the temple of God, the Virgin is presented openly, and she proclaimeth Christ unto all. To her, then, with a great voice let us cry aloud: Rejoice, O thou fulfilment of the Creator's dispensation.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Tone

Today, the most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasure of God, enters the house of the Lord, bringing the grace of the Divine Spirit. The Angels of God praise her. She is the heavenly tabernacle.
