Our local church, St. George, is not a charity,
but an extension of our homes
that we all share together.
XRONIA POLLA to all who celebrate Name Days this week—today and next Sunday we remember the Righteous Old Testament Saints, among them being Esther, Daniel and the Prophets Jeremiah and David. We remember our parishioners named for these Saints and wish them all Many Years! Prophet Jeremiah is also celebrated specifically on May 1 and the Prophet King David on the Sunday after the Nativity of Christ. Daniel are the Three Holy Youths are specifically celebrated tomorrow, Monday December 17, although they too, are among the Righteous of the Old Testament. Just as a reminder--Fr. is pleased to celebrate weekday Divine Liturgies for anyone’s Name Day at their request. Please let him know at least a couple days in advance to arrange. Thank you!
GROWING SAINTS SUNDAY SCHOOL meets today. This class is suitable for children ages 7-14, parents are welcome to attend the class with their child whenever they’d like. Let us all learn together and glorify God! Today we’ll learn a bit about Ss. Anna & Joachim and the history of the Virgin Mary Theotokos before the Annunciation by the AA Gabriel. Don’t miss it!
ALMSGIVING IN THE SPIRIT OF ST. NICHOLAS Thanks to all of you who donated items both last Sunday and today to bless the homeless/low income individuals and families in the church’s neighborhood. Men’s winter wear is needed—clean, gently used winter wear is fine. Hats & gloves for men, women & children are appreciated. New warm socks are appreciated. Lip balm is appreciated. Snack foods—peanut butter/cheese crackers, Slim Jims (jerky) are appreciated. We’ve already done one drop off to Saving Grace Thrift Shop on Union Street (who make distribution) and we’ll do another one this week. If you would like to make a financial donation toward this effort, that can be done during fellowship hour today. Thank you!
POINSETTIAS to decorate the church in anticipation of the Nativity Feast are welcome.
LOOKING AHEAD--CHRISTMAS SERVICES Next Monday, December 24, we will celebrate a (candlelight) vesperal Divine Liturgy for Christ’s Holy Nativity beginning at 5:30PM. On Tuesday, Christmas Day, the Orthros of Christmas will begin at 9AM, followed by the Divine Liturgy at 10. CHRIST IS BORN! GLORIFY HIM!
PARISH COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS Election is over and all those who ran won by a landslide! Congrats to all members, may God grant you strength and wisdom as you continue to guide our St. George parish on a path to give God glory.
TO OUR STEWARDS & BENEFACTORS Many thanks to all those who’ve increased their financial gifts to maintain the on-going worship and ministries here at St. George. As a gentle reminder, the Church does need increased stewardship to cover our operations as St. George chose not to be involved in the Folk Festival this month. The Folk Festival income had always been our “bump up” funding each year. We will not have that funding this year. We did realize a record $6,956 profit from our Greek Dance.
As of November 18, we are running a $4219.64 overall deficit. Believe that St. George is aware of all those who care about our spiritual house and his prayers are with us. Thank you for your continued stewardship and loving generosity for St. George, Bangor! We are keeping our heads almost above water because a few people have made some special contributions. Thanks again.
NOTE: Average weekly budgeted expenses for us are $1895.39. Our annual budgeted expenses are $98,560.28 which is lower than about 99% of all the other parishes in the GOA. Our budget was made with a “very sharp pencil.” Another observation: 88% through the year, we have spent 80% of the amount budgeted (this is a good thing). We have also received 76% of our budgeted income (let’s do our best to fulfill this commitment before year end).
