THIS IS THE REAL BULLETIN

TODAY IS THE SUNDAY OF THE HOLY CROSS We will be venerating the Holy Cross this morning as marking our hope and strength at this mid-point in Great and Holy Lent. Please come forward to venerate the Cross and to receive some basil with flowers at the end of the morning service. These items are blessed during the service and should be treated as such. Prosfora bakers may use blessed basil to create prozimi (see article below). Some use the blessed basil received in cooking. Some keep it in their icon corner and let it dry—same with the flowers. We only ask that you keep in mind that these items have been blessed in the church. Please keep this in mind and handle accordingly, however you choose to use them. Thank you.

LENTEN ALMSGIVING PROJECT led by our Sunday School gets underway TODAY. We are selling bags of home-made spiced nuts made by our students. $5 per snack bag. Please help us make a difference in the lives of “The Lucky Girls” which is the title of an on-line video that documents the work of this precious and much needed ministry to girls and young adult women in India. Please take 15 minutes and watch the movie to see the ministry we are supporting this season: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRqUxA6RdX0 Thank you!

THE GREEK REPORTER HAS PROFILED Sr. Nektaria’s ministry in Calcutta: https://world.greekreporter.com/2019/03/07/sister-nectaria-the-only-greek-of-calcutta-and-mother-to-thousands/ Again, a worthy ministry for support this Lenten season (and beyond!)

CHANTING VIDEOS FROM OUR CHURCH Pat Claus has her own Youtube channel, on which she is posting many of our Orthros and other hymns as sung by our wonderful chanters. We are very fortunate to have our Byzantine chanters here at our little church and she would like to share this treasure with others! Anyone can learn the different Orthros chants by going to the channel and listening to all the videos there. Pat is still adding videos but eventually she hopes to have all the different Orthros prayers in every tone. In addition, she will be adding other liturgical hymns as she can. Please subscribe to her channel at the web address below, and like and share her videos! https://www.youtube.com/user/MsPatClaus

IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO ST. GEORGE? If you are visiting our parish this morning, welcome! Orthodox Church tradition encourages Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church to approach the Holy Chalice for Communion... however, if you are not Orthodox, we ask that you please refrain. All worshipers are welcome to receive antidoron (a piece of blessed bread) immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Please stay for fellowship hour that we might get to know you.

WORSHIPING THE TRUE & LIVING GOD Worshiping the Living God, the All-Holy Trinity, is a witness of our faith in and love for Him. The Divine Liturgy is the service of thanksgiving to God. The Divine Liturgy is also the service of particular nurture for the Orthodox Christian--Christ is Present in the elements of Holy Communion. He nurtures those who approach with fear (reverence), faith and love. Those who partake of Communion receive God within. This is a great Mystery, not to be taken lightly, but one that the Orthodox Christian is bid to COME. Please avail yourself of the opportunities to worship the Lord and to receive Him in faith.

JOIN US FOR FELLOWSHIP HOUR DOWNSTAIRS Everyone is encouraged to come downstairs after service for refreshments. If you’re visiting, please let us treat you. We’re a family here and we all contribute toward the table weekly. So, thank you to all who have made fellowship time possible again today!

VALET PARKING Some parishioners have difficulty walking distances and find it hard to park near enough to the church on Sunday mornings.  If this applies to you, please do the following: park in the loading zone in front of the church, and come indoors with your car key and ask in the office for someone to park the car for you and you will be assisted.  We are here to help one another.  Please ask for help if needed.  Thank you.

GREAT VESPERS St. George Church offers Great Vespers at 6PM on any evening before a Divine Liturgy will be served. Each Saturday evening at 6PM, Great Vespers is served in anticipation of Sunday morning’s Divine Liturgy. This will also be true of evenings preceding a major feast. Participation in these services is an opportunity for us to worship corporately and multiply the power of our prayers. If for any reason vespers will not be served, you will receive a message beforehand via the church list-server advising cancellation.

ROUTINE SERVICE TIMES AT ST. GEORGE Great Vespers 6PM (the evening before a Divine Liturgy); Orthros/Matins (morning prayers) 9AM; Divine Liturgy 10AM.

NAME DAYS If you would like to participate in a Divine Liturgy on your Name Day, please let Fr. Leo know to arrange this beforehand.

SPECIAL PRAYER SUPPORT WHEN NEEDED Fr. can meet you here at the church and offer particular prayers for you if you are going to be traveling or are preparing to have medical procedures done (hospitalization, etc.) He is available to make hospital visits and will routinely visit those in convalescent care. Please arrange with him according to need. Thank you.

Saints and Feasts

March 31

Sunday of the Holy Cross

With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.

March 31

Hieromartyr Hypatius

This Saint, who was from Cilicia of Asia Minor, became Bishop of Gangra, the capital of Paphlagonia. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council. Because of his confession of the Orthodox Faith, he was put to death by the Novatians, a sect which denied that sins committed after Baptism could be forgiven.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Tone

Let all things above in heav’n rejoice, and let all things below on earth be glad. With all the might and strength of His arm an eternal deed the Lord did perform. Beneath His feet He has trampled down death by death, and first-born of the dead has He become. From the womb of Hades has He delivered us, and to all the world has granted His great redeeming mercy.

Apolytikion of Sun. of the Elevation of the Cross in the First Tone

Save, O Lord, Thy people
and bless Thine inheritance;
grant Thou unto the faithful victory over adversaries.
And by the power of Thy Cross do Thou preserve Thy commonwealth.

APOLYTIKION FOR ST. GEORGE in the Fourth Tone

AS the Liberator of captives,
and the protector of the poor,
a physician for the ill,
he defender of rulers,
O great Martyr, Saint George, victorious,
pray for us to Christ our God
to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Eighth Tone

To you, the champion leader, We your flock dedicate
A feast of victory and of thanksgiving,
As ones rescued out of suff'rings, O Theotokos;
But as you are one with might which is invincible,
From all dangers that can be deliver us,
That we may cry to you: Hail, O Bride unwedded.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Sixth Tone.

Prokeimenon. Sixth Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6.

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the Holy Cross

Sunday of the Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Archbishop’s Encyclical for Holy and Great Lent 2019

03/08/2019

Great Lent is most certainly a challenge as we have experienced in the weeks of preparation for this season. We have heard the words of our Lord concerning the Last Judgment and the manner of life and service that leads to eternal life.

Archbishop’s Encyclical for the Feast of the Annunciation and the Day of Greek Independence (2019)

03/20/2019

It is the Feast of the Annunciation, and we celebrate God’s revelation of His grace to the Virgin Mary. It is a new day as the Archangel Gabriel announced the Incarnation of Christ, saying to the Theotokos, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (Luke 1:31) Today we commemorate a sacred event, when the love and divine will of God was made known to humankind.
