SIGNUP SHEET TO SPONSOR ITEMS NEEDED FOR HOLY WEEK Our church encourages the underwriting of various items needed for services during Holy Week. There is a signup sheet for this purpose in the narthex. Thank you in advance for your generous gifts!

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING THE THEOTOKOS ORPHANAGE IN CALCUTTA THIS SEASON Our fund-raising total has exceeded $300. Thanks to our Sunday School families who prepared spiced nuts and to all those who supported the fund-raiser by purchasing them! Sr. Nektaria, mother to 100 orphaned girls, has sent a note stating how moved they all felt upon learning of our active love on their behalf. She and the girls send us their love and prayers for a blessed Pascha.

VIGIL CANDLES IN THE NARTHEX Large, contained, unlit, white vigil candles are available in the stand in the narthex. These candles are often lit in memory of departed loved ones or for on-going prayer concerns. Suggested donation is $10 per candle. Please leave your donation in the tray. Thank you.

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE COX FAMILY who’ve again made it possible for us to enjoy a fish meal together on this Palm Sunday. We appreciate your loving service! A minimum $5/per plate donation is suggested.

HOLY FRIDAY FLORAL DECORATION OF CHRIST’S TOMB Decoration led by Cathy Speronis will get underway at 11:30AM, following the reading of Royal Hours. If you can help cut and place flowers on the tomb, you are most welcome to participate. The more help, the better, as the tomb needs to be ready for the 3PM service. Thank you, Cathy, for your floral expertise and extra efforts!

HAND-EMBROIDERED WINDING SHEET Our church is the recipient of a large white and gold hand-embroidered winding sheet to wrap the Body of Christ when He is removed from the Cross on Good Friday afternoon. This is a sacred gift from Eugenia Kolkas’mother who lives in Greece. Our church is blessed to receive this loving gift!

FOLLOWING THE DIVINE LITURGY OF HOLY PASCHA (on Sunday, April 28 in the wee hours of the morning) we will have an afterglow Paschal buffet in the fellowship hall. Please bring your favorite non-fasting food(s) to share with others!

OUR CHURCH’S NAME DAY, THE FEAST OF ST. GEORGE, will be celebrated on Bright Monday, April 29. Great Vespers on Holy Pascha evening (6PM), Orthros and Divine Liturgy to follow on Monday morning at 9 and 10AM.

REMINDER: HOLY PASCHA IS CELEBRATED AS ONE, LONG, HAPPY DAY From Holy Pascha through Saturday, May 4, Pascha is celebrated—no fasting during Bright Week (that means you can eat ice cream every day!)

NEW MOVIE ABOUT THE STRUGGLE FOR GREEK INDEPENDENCE is coming to Bangor Cinemas on Thursday evening, May 16. The movie is called “Cliffs of Freedom” and you can find a trailer for the movie on-line. Be aware, the movie is rated R for violence due to the nature of the theme. It is an action movie with a romantic element.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE “CLIFFS OF FREEDOM” show in Bangor on Thursday evening, May 16, (one showing only) you need to pre-buy your tickets this week. They are $12 each. Pat C. has made the effort to arrange the showing for which we thank her. It’s up to us, however, to purchase enough tickets to assure the showing will take place. IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO ST. GEORGE? If you are visiting our parish this morning, welcome! Orthodox Church tradition encourages Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church to approach the Holy Chalice for Communion... however, if you are not Orthodox, we ask that you please refrain. All worshipers are welcome to receive antidoron (a piece of blessed bread) immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Please stay for fellowship hour that we might get to know you.

WORSHIPING THE TRUE & LIVING GOD Worshiping the Living God, the All-Holy Trinity, is a witness of our faith in and love for Him. The Divine Liturgy is the service of thanksgiving to God. The Divine Liturgy is also the service of particular nurture for the Orthodox Christian--Christ is Present in the elements of Holy Communion. He nurtures those who approach with fear (reverence), faith and love. Those who partake of Communion receive God within. This is a great Mystery, not to be taken lightly, but one that the Orthodox Christian is bid to COME. Please avail yourself of the opportunities to worship the Lord and to receive Him in faith.

VALET PARKING Some parishioners have difficulty walking distances and find it hard to park near enough to the church on Sunday mornings.  If this applies to you, please do the following: park in the loading zone in front of the church, and come indoors with your car key and ask in the office for someone to park the car for you and you will be assisted.  We are here to help one another.  Please ask for help if needed.  Thank you. 

GREAT VESPERS St. George Church offers Great Vespers at 6PM on any evening before a Divine Liturgy will be served. Each Saturday evening at 6PM, Great Vespers is served in anticipation of Sunday morning’s Divine Liturgy. This will also be true of evenings preceding a major feast. Participation in these services is an opportunity for us to worship corporately and multiply the power of our prayers. If for any reason vespers will not be served, you will receive a message beforehand via the church list-server advising cancellation.

ROUTINE SERVICE TIMES AT ST. GEORGE Great Vespers 6PM (the evening before a Divine Liturgy); Orthros/Matins (morning prayers) 9AM; Divine Liturgy 10AM.

NAME DAYS If you would like to participate in a Divine Liturgy on your Name Day, please let Fr. Leo know to arrange this beforehand.

SPECIAL PRAYER SUPPORT WHEN NEEDED Fr. can meet you here at the church and offer particular prayers for you if you are going to be traveling or are preparing to have medical procedures done (hospitalization, etc.) He is available to make hospital visits and will routinely visit those in convalescent care. Please arrange with him according to need. Thank you.

Palm Sunday

On Sunday, five days before the Passover of the Law, the Lord came from Bethany to Jerusalem. Sending two of His disciples to bring Him a foal of an ass, He sat thereon and entered into the city. When the multitude there heard that Jesus was coming, they straightway took up the branches of palm trees in their hands, and went forth to meet Him. Others spread their garments on the ground, and yet others cut branches from the trees and strewed them in the way that Jesus was to pass; and all of them together, especially the children, went before and after Him, crying out: "Hosanna: Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel" (John 12:13). This is the radiant and glorious festival of our Lord's entry into Jerusalem that we celebrate today.

The branches of the palm trees symbolize Christ's victory over the devil and death. The word Hosanna means "Save, I pray," or "Save, now." The foal of an ass, and Jesus' sitting thereon, and the fact that this animal was untamed and considered unclean according to the Law, signified the former uncleanness and wildness of the nations, and their subjection thereafter to the holy Law of the Gospel.

The Holy Hieromartyr Januarius and Those With Him

These Martyrs contested for piety's sake in Campania of Italy, during the reign of Diocletian (284-305), when Timothy was Proconsul. Saint Januarius was the Bishop of Benevento in Campania; he was arrested and taken to Nola, where he was cast into a burning furnace, from which he came forth unharmed; at Puteoli, together with Proculus, Sosius, and Faustus the deacons, Desiderius, reader of the Church of Benevento, and Eurychius and Acutius, nobles from Puteoli, he was cast to wild beasts, which as they came near the Saints, fell affectionately at their feet. Finally they were all beheaded, about the year 305.

In confirming the common Resurrection, O Christ God, Thou didst raise up Lazarus from the dead before Thy Passion. Wherefore, we also, like the children, bearing the symbols of victory, cry to Thee, the Vanquisher of death: Hosanna in the highest; blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord.

The Reading is from John 12:1-18

Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."

When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

This year’s Ministry Awards Banquet honoring Clergy and Laity of our communities will take place on Sunday, June 9th at Lombardo’s in Randolph, MA. The reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of this annual celebration during which we gather as a Metropolis family to recognize and thank the faithful stewards of our local parishes for their dedicated service.

I rarely preach politics from the pulpit. I realize in our congregation we have Democrats and Republican; we have those who may be more conservative and others more liberal. Our country is so divided, and if we talk politics, our own church family will quickly become divided. That is, we will become divided if we forget that our ultimate leader is Jesus Christ, and His call is for us to live under the reign of His Kingdom.
