SERVICES THIS WEEK Paraklesis to the Theotokos Monday and Tuesday evenings at 6PM. Vesperal Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Holy Dormition will be celebrated Wednesday evening, August 14, at 6PM.

There will be a recuperation period, of course, and along with prayers, you can send get-well wishes by mail to Areti Masero-Baldwin, 232 Main Street, Rockland, ME 04841.

DORMITION NAME DAY BLESSINGS Xronia Polla for all those celebrating their name day this Thursday, August 15--those named Maria, Mariam, Mary, Despina, Panayiota, Panayiotis and other variations of the name of our Holy Virgin Lady Theotokos. She is a great namesake worthy of all honor and veneration, the Mother of Christ our God.

A MARRIAGE BLESSING Patrick and Brigid’s marriage will be blessed after the Divine Liturgy Sunday morning, September 1. Please plan to participate with your presence and prayers. Fellowship hour will follow immediately afterwards.

NEW BOOKLETS IN NARTHEX LITERATURE RACK Our literature rack has been restocked and you will find some new publications we haven’t had in the past. Please give a look-see.

PARISH GIFT FROM BOGDAN & RALUCA Before leaving for their new home in New Hampshire, Bogdan & Raluca donated a plasma TV monitor which will make it possible to view media in the fellowship hall. We send big thanks to them for thinking of us in a practical way!

SUMMER LIFE AT ST. GEORGE Most of our parishioners take a vacation between June and September. New people come to visit but there are also more empty seats than usual. We pray that all will remain safe throughout their travels. We oftentimes see more visitors during these months since Maine is New England’s summer playground. And, we look forward to greeting our families who usually spend their summers in the area. God bless all of you during this coming season of greater relaxation and refreshment.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE Donations can now be made online.

FACEBOOK PAGE Pat Claus is happy to receive items you’d like to have posted on the church’s FB page. You can submit items to her at patclaus@roadrunner.com.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO ST. GEORGE? If you are visiting our parish this morning, welcome! Orthodox Church tradition encourages Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church to approach the Holy Chalice for Communion... however, if you are not Orthodox, we ask that you please refrain. All worshipers are welcome to receive antidoron (a piece of blessed bread) immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Please stay for fellowship hour that we might get to know you.

WORSHIPING THE TRUE & LIVING GOD Worshiping the Living God, the All-Holy Trinity, is a witness of our faith in and love for Him. The Divine Liturgy is the service of thanksgiving to God. The Divine Liturgy is also the service of particular nurture for the Orthodox Christian--Christ is Present in the elements of Holy Communion. He nurtures those who approach with fear (reverence), faith and love. Those who partake of Communion receive God within. This is a great Mystery, not to be taken lightly, but one that the Orthodox Christian is bid to COME. Please avail yourself of the opportunities to worship the Lord and to receive Him in faith.

JOIN US FOR FELLOWSHIP HOUR DOWNSTAIRS Everyone is encouraged to come downstairs after service for refreshments. If you’re visiting, please let us treat you. We’re a family here and we all contribute toward the table weekly. So, thank you to all who have made fellowship time possible again today!

VALET PARKING Some parishioners have difficulty walking distances and find it hard to park near enough to the church on Sunday mornings.  If this applies to you, please do the following: park in the loading zone in front of the church, and come indoors with your car key and ask in the office for someone to park the car for you and you will be assisted.  We are here to help one another.  Please ask for help if needed.  Thank you.

GREAT VESPERS St. George Church offers Great Vespers at 6PM on any evening before a Divine Liturgy will be served. Each Saturday evening at 6PM, Great Vespers is served in anticipation of Sunday morning’s Divine Liturgy. This will also be true of evenings preceding a major feast. Participation in these services is an opportunity for us to worship corporately and multiply the power of our prayers. If for any reason vespers will not be served, you will receive a message beforehand via the church list-server advising cancellation.

ROUTINE SERVICE TIMES AT ST. GEORGE Great Vespers 6PM (the evening before a Divine Liturgy); Orthros/Matins (morning prayers) 9AM; Divine Liturgy 10AM.

NAME DAYS If you would like to participate in a Divine Liturgy on your Name Day, please let Fr. Leo know to arrange this beforehand.

SPECIAL PRAYER SUPPORT WHEN NEEDED Fr. can meet you here at the church and offer particular prayers for you if you are going to be traveling or are preparing to have medical procedures done (hospitalization, etc.) He is available to make hospital visits and will routinely visit those in convalescent care. Please arrange with him according to need. Thank you.

Euplus the Holy Martyr & Archdeacon of Cantania

This Martyr was from Catania in Sicily and contested during the reign of Diocletian. He presented himself of his own accord to Calvisianus the Governor, who put him to exceedingly harsh torments. As Euplus was on the rack, Calvisianus commanded him to worship Mars, Apollo, and Aesculapius; he answered he worshipped the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He was beheaded in the year 304.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Seventh Tone

O Lord by Your sacred Cross You abolished death, and granted unto the thief blessed paradise. The Myrrh-bearers ceased lamenting and turned to joy. The apostles did preach the Good News at Your command, that You had risen from the dead O Christ Our God, bestowing Your mercy upon the world ever more.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Transfiguration in the Seventh Tone

Thou wast transfigured on the mountain, O Christ our God, showing to Thy disciples Thy glory as each one could endure. Shine forth Thou on us, who are sinners all, Thy light never-ending, through the prayers of the Theotokos, Light-bestower, glory be to Thee.

APOLYTIKION FOR ST. GEORGE in the Fourth Tone

AS the Liberator of captives,
and the protector of the poor,
a physician for the ill,
he defender of rulers,
O great Martyr, Saint George, victorious,
pray for us to Christ our God
to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Seventh Tone

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Epistle Reading

Seventh Tone.

Prokeimenon. Seventh Tone. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

Our Lord gathered around Him twelve weak men: two sought seats of recognition in the kingdom, one denied Him, one betrayed Him and only one remained by His side at the foot of the cross
