HUMAN TRANSFORMATION THROUGH REPENTANCE - HONORING ST. MARY OF EGYPT A stirring dramatization from Trisagion Films:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBXvDuNElB8&t=190s

CANCELLATION  Wednesday evening's Pre-Sanctified Divine Liturgy has been cancelled.

GABRIYA's UPCOMING BAPTISM  Gabriya will be received as a member of the Orthodox Church by Holy Baptism THIS SATURDAY, (Lazarus Saturday), April 8.  Her sponsor will be Nina F.  Orthros at 9AM followed by the Divine Liturgy at 10.  An afterglow pot-luck will follow the morning services and then decorating of the Church for Palm Sunday and Holy Week.  Please mark your calendars and plan to participate in this Feast Day and special occasion.  See you then!

MEET GABRIYA S  Gabriya is a recent transplant to Maine (2022) having lived in both Utah and Michigan prior.  She was raised in a Protestant Christian home and made a commitment to follow Christ at age 15.  However, while still in Utah she began to explore the Eastern Orthodox Faith although she never expected to convert in the future.
After arriving in Maine, she became convinced the Orthodox Church was the only place she could worship God according to historic practice and revealed Truth.  She tried various Protestant congregations but kept returning to the Orthodox Church.  Here it is that her heart and mind found true agreement.  In her words, "Around December of 2022, I was finally honest with myself that the Holy Spirit was leading me to Orthodoxy, which led to me making the decision to join this March."
We thank God for having led you to the historic Christian Church and Faith, Gabriya, and we are very glad he brought you to St. George!

NEXT SUNDAY IS PALM SUNDAY  Please come prepared for this special Feast Day, to receive blessed palms to place in your icon corner at home.  Next Sunday's fellowship meal will be pot-luck--fish, olive oil and wine are permitted on Palm Sunday.  Feel free to bring fish based dishes if desired, i.e., tuna salad, smoked salmon, etc.  Thank you.

WELCOME TO ST. GEORGE'S NEWEST MEMBER  George Z was received into the Church by Holy Chrismation on Friday, March 31. Lambros was his sponsor. Welcome George, we are so glad to have you in fellowship with the Church!

DONATIONS REQUESTED FOR FRESH FLOWERS AND CANDLES NEEDED DURING HOLY WEEK  In order to decorate Christ's Tomb for Holy Friday and otherwise beautify the church, funds are needed (over and above stewardship) for the purchase of fresh flowers and candles.  Inasmuch as you can, if you can make an additional donation for these items either this Sunday or next, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please put the funds in an envelope in the tray, marked as such, or give directly to the church office, making your intention known.  Thank you!

BLESSED TO BE A NONAGENARIAN  Loving wishes to Athena D, one of our St. George community members, who is celebrating her 90th birthday in sunny St. Augustine, FL!  God grant you many more years, dear Athena!

A NOTE FROM LEE, PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT  Your 2023 stewardship pledge is needed.  Stewardship pledges help Parish Council reasonably plan for the year.  We pray you can, and will, be generous when remembering your Church and our Holy Patron, Saint George.  Pledge forms are available on the candle stand.  Please turn in your planned pledge to the church office TODAY if you haven't already done so.  You can also indicate your yearly pledge via postal mail (90 Sanford Street, Bangor 04401) or via email Thank you - we are a family in Christ and God is with us.  We can never outgive God Almighty and we are greatly blessed!

2022 BUDGET DEFICIT The 2022 financial report from Parish Council is part of this bulletin, as an insert.  Please scroll down to read.  It's essential that all parishioners be aware of the parish's weekly financial needs and assist in meeting them.  Please let us work as a team, we have a very good track record in that way.  Thank you, Lee & Parish Council

Ben-Hur A Tale of the Christ is a movie worth watching in the week leading up to Palm Sunday.  It can be purchased or rented here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cK0U64klnA.  This is the 1959 version with Charlton Heston which never grows old with its realism and power.  The title "A Tale of the Christ" is what comes alive before our eyes.  It's powerful.  Recommended viewing--runs 3 hours 40 minutes and does have a break point for "Intermission."  For those who don't know, the Ben-Hur novel was written by Civil War General, Lew Wallace.

BIG THANKS TO ROMAN  As a Hannaford employee, he's got connections with the produce department and has kindly accumulated some bags of yellow onion skins for us to use to dye our Paschal eggs red.  If you want a bag of onion skins and did not pick up a bag last week, please let Pres. know.  Thanks!

HOW TO DYE EGGS WITHOUT COMMERCIAL DYE  Definitely make red eggs for Holy Pascha, but there are other color dyes you can create naturally as well.  You'll be surprised by the beauty!  How to's are here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeH2xaoOOZ4 / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2-BwqFvGXg / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ay-jlXWH9M

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY HARD COOK EGGS USING AN INSTANT POT  It is SO quick and easy!  https://youtu.be/Yxhl98PPY_c

REMINDER - PLEASE BRING STAPLE FOODS FOR MANNA MINISTRIES WEEKLY and leave them in the church office.  Remember, we have low income neighbors who need nourishing and somewhat easy to prepare items.  Thank you!

FOODS REQUESTED BY MANNA MINISTRIES FOOD PANTRY  They are currently in need of canned soups, pasta sauce and tuna fish.  Other foods are also welcome, but those listed as especially sought now.  And, they sent a hearty thank you to our St. George community for all we've been sending over in recent weeks!  Again, thanks to Demetri for being our liaison with Manna.  Read further in this bulletin to learn more about Manna Ministries and why we support their work.

A MINISTRY TO OUR CHURCH'S NEIGHBORS  Our church sits in a neighborhood where there are some obvious on-going needs.  A number of lower income people living nearby rely on Manna Ministries' food pantry and soup kitchen (located in the Old Brick Church) somewhat regularly.  In an effort to help the pantry help our neighbors, let us make the effort to bring some staple foods to church every Sunday and leave them in the office.  We will take the donated foods down to Manna Ministries so we can be part of the effort to feed those who are hungry in our area.  This is not meant to be a one-time thing, rather something we do routinely as a ministry to our neighbors.  A verse from the Old Testament speaks to the needs for on-going charity, Deuteronomy 15:11For there will never cease to be poor in the land; that is why I am commanding you to open wide your hand to your brother and to the poor and needy in your land.  And the Lord Jesus speaks about the effects of our charitable giving in Matthew 25:40, And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.’ So, let us fulfill that which pleases God and He will reward the love and obedience of the giver.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - Donations can be made online.

GENERAL INFORMATION

IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO ST. GEORGE? If you are visiting our parish this morning, welcome! Orthodox Church tradition encourages Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church to approach the Holy Chalice for Communion... however, if you are not Orthodox, we ask that you please refrain. All worshipers are welcome to receive antidoron (a piece of blessed bread) immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Please stay for fellowship hour that we might get to know you.

WORSHIPING THE TRUE & LIVING GOD Worshiping the Living God, the All-Holy Trinity, is a witness of our faith in and love for Him. The Divine Liturgy is the service of thanksgiving to God. The Divine Liturgy is also the service of particular nurture for the Orthodox Christian--Christ is Present in the elements of Holy Communion. He nurtures those who approach with fear (reverence), faith and love. Those who partake of Communion receive God within. This is a great Mystery, not to be taken lightly, but one that the Orthodox Christian is bid to COME. Please avail yourself of the opportunities to worship the Lord and to receive Him in faith.

JOIN US FOR FELLOWSHIP HOUR DOWNSTAIRS Everyone is encouraged to come downstairs after service for refreshments. If you’re visiting, please let us treat you. We’re a family here and we all contribute toward the table weekly. So, thank you to all who have made fellowship time possible again today!

ROUTINE SERVICE TIMES AT ST. GEORGE Orthros/Matins (morning prayers) 9AM; Divine Liturgy 10AM.

SPECIAL PRAYER SUPPORT WHEN NEEDED Fr. will offer particular prayers for you if you are going to be traveling or are preparing to have medical procedures done (hospitalization, etc.).  Please arrange with him according to need. Thank you.

April 02

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Tone

Although the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers guarded Your most pure body, You arose on the third day, O Savior, giving life to the world. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried out to you, O Giver of Life: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your kingdom! Glory to Your dispensation, only Lover of Mankind!

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. Mary of Egypt in the Eighth Tone

In thee the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thy deeds thou didst teach us to overlook the flesh, for it passeth away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Mary, thy spirit rejoiceth with the Angels.

APOLYTIKION FOR ST. GEORGE in the Fourth Tone

AS the Liberator of captives,
and the protector of the poor,
a physician for the ill,
he defender of rulers,
O great Martyr, Saint George, victorious,
pray for us to Christ our God
to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

First Tone.

Ἀδελφοί, Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς, οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν, οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, οὐδὲ διʼ αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. Εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα ταύρων καὶ τράγων, καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους, ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων, εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι;

Prokeimenon. First Tone. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
