Metropolis of NJ Holy Cross Celebration in Asbury Park:

On Sunday, September 16^th, the Divine Liturgy will take place at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, NJ. As we do every year, all New Jersey Churches will be closed and His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos invites all the faithful to attend services there. Please make every effort to be there. Beefsteak Dinner, Saturday, October 13^th:

The St. George Parish Council will be hosting this event. The cost is $50 per person in advance and includes beer and soda. BYO wine and liquor. Children 12 and under are $30. We will be raffling Gift Basket prizes. Please consider making a donation to the church to purchase gifts for this event.

Greek School Registration for 2018-2019:

Greek School classes will begin on Tuesday, September 11^th, 2018 at 4:00pm with an Agiasmo Blessing. Registration has begun. Please drop by the Parish office to pick up a registration package.

Sunday Church School:

We hope you had an enjoyable summer and welcome you back to our St. George Community! Another full and spiritually enriching Church School year is planned. We are excited to announce that we have expanded our program to include 11^th and 12^th grades! We hope to see many familiar faces return to experience and contribute to these new classes! St. George is pleased to now offer Church School classes for Little Angels (age 3) through 12^th grade. Our first day of classes will be September 23^rd. By directive of our Metropolis, no Church School classes shall take place during the Divine Liturgy. Families are asked to participate in the Divine Liturgy at 9:30am together and on time (students will sit with their families). Children will proceed to their classes immediately following Holy Communion. All classes will end at 11:45am. Church School registration forms are available in the lower hall and on the table outside the classrooms. A registration fee of $40.00 per family will be collected to cover the cost of books and other school supplies. Likewise, all church school families are expected to be current stewards of St. George.

St. George Beautification “Capital Improvement Program”:

Last year we embarked on a series of capital improvements to increase the beauty and majesty of our great church. As part of the project, we are reminding everyone of the capital campaign goal of raising $200,000 in three years. We secured a loan to complete the projects and the capital campaign contributions will be used to repay the loan. A key component of this campaign is the participation of each of our members, remembering that we are all part of God’s Church. As is said in our Liturgy, “Sanctify those who love the beauty of Your house.” The various levels of giving opportunities are outlined in the attached brochure. Donors will be recognized in the Orthodox Light and on a plaque according to their contribution level.

The Holy & Righteous Ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna

Today, the day following the Nativity of the most holy Theotokos, we celebrate the synaxis of Saints Joachim and Anna, honouring them as her parents.

The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross

Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place.

Rest from labour. A Fast is observed today, whatever day of the week it may be.
