Sunday Memorials, Artoclasias and Other Blessings:

Please inform the church office well in advance of Sunday mornings for all memorials, artoclasias, 40 day blessings and other blessings so as not to disrupt the Divine Liturgy. If any requests or lists of names are received after the Great Entrance they will have to wait until the following Sunday.

****Additionally, in order to preserve the sanctity of the Divine Liturgy, please wait to light candles in the St. Nectarios Chapel at the correct time. If one arrives after the Great Entrance, they will have to wait until the end of Liturgy, while the Andithoron is being given out, to light candles in the Chapel.

Communion Guidelines:

Baptized and Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared, according to the Holy Orthodox Church guidelines, may receive Holy Communion. Please allow our Sunday School children to receive Holy Communion first and wait for the ushers to dismiss your row.

Holy Confession:

If you wish to partake in the Sacrament of Holy Confession, please feel free to call the Church office or Fr. Peter to arrange a time.

Wine Tasting Experience:

Join us for an enjoyable evening at our Wine Tasting event on Friday, October 4, 2019, at the Waterside Restaurant in North Bergen. Tickets in advance are $100 and after October 1^st the cost is $125. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, wine pairings, cigar rollers, and raffle opportunities. Please consider donating your favorite bottle of wine to add to our Wine Pull Raffle. We are asking that each bottle be a minimum of $20.00. All bottles can be left at the church office. Also, please visit our table during coffee hour to purchase tickets to the event. Orthodox Christian Adult Education (Chrismation) Classes:

Fr. Peter will be offering Orthodox Christian instruction classes that will be held on the following Thursday evenings from 7:00pm - 8:30pm:

This is a class based on the fundamentals of the Orthodox Church and will also include Bible Fellowship and Discussion as well. This is an excellent opportunity for Orthodox Christians as well as non-Orthodox Christians to receive additional instruction about the Orthodox Christian Church, the traditions involved and many other teachings in the Holy Scriptures. This class is also for those who are considering being baptized or chrismated into the Orthodox faith.

Attention all College Students:

Fr. Peter is leading an OCF gathering which covers our faith, worship services and general discussions at Seton Hall University. The next gathering will be held on Wednesday, October 2^nd at 6:30PM. Please call the church office for further information. As the official campus ministry of the Assembly of Canonical Bishops of the USA, Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) works on behalf of all the Orthodox to connect students to Christ and His Church during college. Through its campus-based chapter, regional events and programs, OCF engages Orthodox college students across the continent in fellowship, education, worship and service.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos “Breast Cancer Awareness”:

Please join us on Sunday, October 6th as we observe “Breast Cancer Awareness”. Please plan to wear something pink to show your support of this national initiative held each October. During coffee hour that day we will have a resource table with helpful information available. Additionally, we are encouraging all parishioners to join us Saturday, October 12th at MetLife Stadium for the “Making Strides” walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. St. John Commandaria Communion Wine:

One of the traditions or customs in the Orthodox Church is to donate the Communion wine for sacraments, memorial services, or Church Feast Days. The preferable choice is St. John Commandaria. Anyone wishing to make an offering of communion wine can contact the church office. The donation for each bottle of wine is $30.

Stewardship 2019:

Thank you to all of our Stewards who have made their pledges and donations so far for 2019. Our Saint George parish depends upon your generous donations to envision our goals and enhance our ministries and outreach. So please don’t forget to submit your 2019 Stewardship Pledge card. We currently have 237 stewards and we are hoping to reach our goal of 350 stewards for 2019! Pledge cards can be found in the Narthex, Atrium or Church office.

Cyriacus the Hermit of Palestine

This Saint was born in Corinth in 448. He went to Palestine to the Lavra of Euthymius the Great, but because of his youth was sent by Saint Euthymius to Saint Gerasimus; after the death of Saint Gerasimus he returned to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. Later he took on a more rigorous life of asceticism in the wilderness of Natoufa, where there was nothing to eat except the exceedingly bitter wild herb called squills, which, however, through his prayers, God made sweet for him and his disciple. He lived 107 years and reposed in the year 555.

Gregory the Illuminator, Bishop of Armenia

This Saint, a Parthian by race, was the son of Anak. He was born about the year 240 and was taught the Faith of Christ in Caesarea of Cappadocia. He entered the service of Tiridates, King of Armenia, but when discovered to be a Christian, he was subjected to many horrible torments at the King's hands, then was cast into a pit of mire with poisonous serpents and left to die. By the power of God, however, he abode there unharmed for fourteen years, his needs provided by a certain widow, until he was made known by revelation and set free. He converted to piety innumerable multitudes of Armenians, including Tiridates himself, and was consecrated bishop by Leontius, Archbishop of Caesarea, to shepherd the vast flock he had gained for Christ. He spent the last part of his life in retirement in the ascetical discipline, and reposed in peace about the year 325. Saint Gregory is honoured as the Illuminator of Armenia.

Romanos the Melodist

Saint Romanos flourished during the reign of Anastasius (491-518). He was from Emesa of Syria, and apparently was born of Jewish parents, for a hymn written in his honour in Greek says he was "of Hebrew stock," and it has furthermore been noted that he uses many Semitic idioms in his writings. He was baptized an Orthodox Christian, and at some time became a deacon in the Church of Beirut. He was the first composer of the kontakia, the foremost of which is that of the feast of Christ's Nativity, On this day the Virgin .... In composing many of his kontakia. Saint Romanos was inspired by the hymns of Saint Ephraim of Syria.

And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

The sign that thou lovest God, is this, that thou lovest thy fellow; and if thou hatest thy fellow, thy hatred is towards God. For it is blasphemy if thou prayest before God while thou art wroth.
