Baptized and Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared, according to the Holy Orthodox Church guidelines, may receive Holy Communion. Please allow our Sunday School children to receive Holy Communion first and wait for the ushers to dismiss your row.

Parish Council Elections:

Please note that elections for the Parish Council will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 following Church services until 2:00pm. Only Stewards in good standing for the year 2019 are eligible to vote in the election. If you have any questions about the election process, do not hesitate to call the Church office.

Metropolis of NJ Christmas Benefit Concert:

The Metropolis of New Jersey is hosting a Christmas Benefit concert on Saturday, December 7^th, at St. John’s Cathedral in Tenafly at 6:00pm. Handel’s “The Messiah” and other Christmas songs and carols will be performed. Tickets are $50 each and our St. Paraskevi Philoptochos will be coordinating the ticket sales for our community along with our church office. Please contact the church office or see Lisa Marcopulos if you are interested in purchasing a ticket.

New Year’s Eve Party:

Ring in the New Year with fabulous food and entertainment right here at St. George! Please support our efforts and join us at our annual New Year’s Eve party which will take place on Tuesday, December 31^st from 9pm – 1am. Music and entertainment by DJ Yorgo. Appetizers, Dinner, BYOB and raffle prizes! Reservations and payment in advance by December 22^nd: $65 for adults and $35 for children 18 and under. After December 22^nd: Adults $75.00 and $45 for children 18 and under. Doors open at 8:30pm. St. Peter’s Haven Christmas Toy Drive:

Donated toys can be left in the donation box outside the back church office. We are asking for a toy value of $10 or more. Please indicate on the outside of the wrapped gift if it is for a boy or a girl and the age group. Thank you for your generosity during this Christmas season.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos & Sunday School Food Collection & Coat Drive:

As we count our blessings this season, we are encouraging our families to bring non-perishable food items in, not only the next few Sundays, but all year long. St. Peter's Haven is having a Thanksgiving food drive. They are looking for potatoes or sweet potatoes (canned or boxes) stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned vegetables and boxed cake mix. Last year, St. Peter's Haven helped over 300 families in the Clifton area with their Thanksgiving meal. Also, Saint Peter’s Haven is asking for donations of new and gently used coats and jackets for adults and children. If you have any outerwear that you’ve replaced or your children have outgrown, please consider donating them. We will have a collection box outside the back door to the church office for both the food items and the coats. We will be collecting until Sunday, November 24^th.

****We are grateful to our St. George community for their participation in our collection drives for charity. However, we would appreciate our community being mindful of the items we are collecting and the timeline for the collection. Most of the organizations we collect for do not have storage space for donated items, and so they have very clear collection seasons for everything. If you have items that are gently used, and no longer need, and we are not currently collecting, please consider calling Salvation Army, Vietnam Veterans of America or Good Will to pick up your donation. We are proud of our St. George community for their philanthropy, but we also want to be mindful of the appearance of our church.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos Sandwich Sunday:

On Sunday, November 24^th, after liturgy, the Philoptochos is making sandwiches in the upstairs kitchen. Sandwich Sundays, was begun with the goal of preparing sandwiches for the homeless. We try to make a minimum of 225 sandwiches each time. Anyone interested in making a donation to defray the cost, please complete a donation form and return it to the office. It is a wonderful way to remember a loved one, or a special occasion. This month's sandwiches were made possible by generous donations from: Linda Chelius in memory of her husband, Jeff Nektarios Chelius; Kalliope Papadakos in memory of her loved ones, Catina Tsiamtsouris in memory of her husband, George and her sons, Peter and Ronnie; Mr. & Mrs. Ross Halkias in honor of their loved ones. If anyone would like to help prepare the sandwiches, please come to the upstairs kitchen directly after church. Sandwiches are currently delivered to the St. Paul's Men's Shelter. Feeding the hungry is an important tenet of our mission to help the needy.

Security System and Office Computer Upgrades:

We are kindly asking for donations from our community that will be used to install a Door Access Control System on the church doors and for three new office computers. The cost for the new computers and installation is $3,300 and the remaining $6,700 is for the Door System. A new fob security system will be installed on the front glass doors, the metal doors by the downstairs kitchen, the glass doors in the gym and the rear metal gym doors. The church office will also have a remote button to unlock the doors to allow visitors to enter. All this will greatly enhance the security of our building. Additionally, the computers in the church office are 8 years old and no longer efficient and this is interfering with the productivity of the church office, the office of the Treasurer and our ministries. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Please contact the church office for more information. Youth Mission Trip Poinsettia & Wreath Fundraiser:

While on the mission trip, our teenagers partner with local organizations to meet ongoing needs in the community they will serve. They are given the opportunity to participate in a fully integrated service and learning experience not only to assist with needs but also understand the struggles facing the community. We are hoping to alleviate some of the costs associated with the mission trip through fundraising efforts. Hopefully we can count on your support to assist us in keeping the youth of St. George involved in service. Visit our table during “Coffee Hour”. Orders are due by December 1^st and delivery will be on Sunday, December 8^th during coffee hour. Thank you for your support.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos Cancer Awareness:

November is Cancer Awareness Month for the following Cancers: Lung, Pancreatic, Stomach, Carcinoid, as well as for Honoring Caregivers. Please see the church's online bulletin to see information on the signs/symptoms of Lung Cancer and information on a Lung Cancer Screening Center. The Philoptochos would also like to express its sincere appreciation to all caregivers for all they do: providing compassion, monitoring safety, and attending to their loved ones daily needs. Caregivers are some of the strongest people we know!

Maids of Athena:

The Maids of Athena, Hara Chapter #240 Apple Pie Fundraiser pick-up date is Sunday, November 24^th. The Maids of Athena thank everyone who supported them by purchasing a pie. Don’t forget to pick them up in the upstairs hall during “Coffee Hour.”

Stewardship 2019:

Thank you to all of our Stewards who have made their pledges and donations so far for 2019. Our Saint George parish depends upon your generous donations to envision our goals and enhance our ministries and outreach. So please don’t forget to submit your 2019 Stewardship Pledge card. We currently have 277 stewards and we are hoping to reach our goal of 350 stewards for 2019! Pledge cards can be found in the Narthex, Atrium or Church office.

Catherine the Great Martyr of Alexandria

Saint Catherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later; the famous monastery of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement of Rome and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were interchanged at the request of the Church and Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemorate these Saints on their original dates.

James the Great Martyr of Persia

This Saint was from the city of Bythlaba and was of noble birth; he was the closest and most honoured friend of Isdiger (or Yazdegerd) I, King of Persia (reigned 399-420). Though a Christian from his youth, James renounced Christ because he was allured by the King's friendship and flatteries. When his mother and his wife learned of this, they declared to him by letter that they would have nothing more to do with him, since he had preferred a glory that is temporal to the love of Christ. Wounded in soul by these words and coming to himself, the Saint wept over his error, and repudiated the worship of the idols. Therefore, becoming exceedingly wroth, the King - this was Bahram (or Varahran) V (reigned 421-438), Isdiger's son and successor - condemned him to a most bitter death, the likes of which not even a brute beast was ever condemned to: that is, his body was dismembered at every joint of his arms and legs. And so, when he had been cut asunder limb by limb to his very hips and shoulders, the courageous Martyr was finally beheaded, in the year 421.

Stephen the New

The righteous Stephen was born in Constantinople in 715 to pious parents named John and Anna. His mother had prayed often to the most holy Theotokos in her church at Blachernae to be granted a son, and one day received a revelation from our Lady that she would conceive the son she desired. When Anna had conceived, she asked the newly-elected Patriarch Germanus (see May 12) to bless the babe in her womb. He said, "May God bless him through the prayers of the holy First Martyr Stephen." At that moment Anna saw a flame of fire issue from the mouth of the holy Patriarch. When the child was born, she named him Stephen, according to the prophecy of Saint Germanus.

Stephen struggled in asceticism from his youth in Bithynia at the Monastery of Saint Auxentius, which was located at a lofty place called Mount Auxentius (see Feb. 14). Because of his extreme labours and great goodness, he was chosen by the hermits of Mount Auxentius to be their leader. The fame of his spiritual struggles reached the ears of all, and the fragrance of his virtue drew many to himself.

During the reign of Constantine V (741-775), Stephen showed his love of Orthodoxy in contending for the Faith. This Constantine was called Copronymus, that is, "namesake of dung," because while being baptized he had soiled the waters of regeneration, giving a fitting token of what manner of impiety he would later embrace. Besides being a fierce Iconoclast, Constantine raised up a ruthless persecution of monasticism. He held a council in 754 that anathematized the holy icons. Because Saint Stephen rejected this council, the Emperor framed false accusations against him and exiled him. But while in exile Saint Stephen performed healings with holy icons and turned many away from Iconoclasm. When he was brought before the Emperor again, he showed him a coin and asked whose image the coin bore. "Mine," said the tyrant. "If any man trample upon thine image, is he liable to punishment?" asked the Saint. When they that stood by answered yes, the Saint groaned because of their blindness, and said if they thought dishonouring the image of a corruptible king worthy of punishment, what torment would they receive who trampled upon the image of the Master Christ and of the Mother of God? Then he threw the coin to the ground and trampled on it. He was condemned to eleven months in bonds and imprisonment. Later, he was dragged over the earth and was stoned, like Stephen the First Martyr; wherefore he is called Stephen the New. Finally, he was struck with a wooden club on the temple and his head was shattered, and thus he gave up his spirit in the year 767.

Andrew the First- Called Apostle

This Saint was from Bethsaida of Galilee; he was the son of Jonas and the brother of Peter, the chief of the Apostles. He had first been a disciple of John the Baptist; afterwards, on hearing the Baptist's witness concerning Jesus, when he pointed Him out with his finger and said, "Behold the Lamb of God, Which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1.29,36), he straightway followed Christ, and became His first disciple; wherefore he is called the First-called of the Apostles. After the Ascension of the Saviour, he preached in various lands; and having suffered many things for His Name's sake, he died in Patras of Achaia, where he was crucified on a cross in the shape of an "X," the first letter of "Christ" in Greek; this cross is also the symbol of Saint Andrew.

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἄρχων λέγων· διδάσκαλε ἀγαθέ, τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω; εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· τί με λέγεις ἀγαθόν; οὐδεὶς ἀγαθὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ Θεός. τὰς ἐντολὰς οἶδας· μὴ μοιχεύσῃς, μὴ φονεύσῃς, μὴ κλέψῃς, μὴ ψευδομαρτυρήσῃς, τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου. ὁ δὲ εἶπε· ταῦτα πάντα ἐφυλαξάμην ἐκ νεότητός μου. ἀκούσας δὲ ταῦτα ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ἔτι ἕν σοι λείπει· πάντα ὅσα ἔχεις πώλησον καὶ διάδος πτωχοῖς, καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν οὐρανῷ, καὶ δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοι. ὁ δὲ ἀκούσας ταῦτα περίλυπος ἐγένετο· ἦν γὰρ πλούσιος σφόδρα. ἰδὼν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς περίλυπον γενόμενον εἶπε· πῶς δυσκόλως οἱ τὰ χρήματα ἔχοντες εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ! εὐκοπώτερον γάρ ἐστι κάμηλον διὰ τρυμαλιᾶς ῥαφίδος εἰσελθεῖν ἢ πλούσιον εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσελθεῖν. εἶπον δὲ οἱ ἀκούσαντες· καὶ τίς δύναται σωθῆναι; ὁ δὲ εἶπε· τὰ ἀδύνατα παρὰ ἀνθρώποις δυνατὰ παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἐστιν.
