If one arrives after the Great Entrance, they will have to wait until the end of Liturgy, while the Andithoron is being given out, to light candles in the Chapel.

Holy Confession:

If you wish to partake in the Sacrament of Holy Confession, please feel free to call the Church office or Fr. Peter to arrange a time.

Communion Guidelines:

Baptized and Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared, according to the Holy Orthodox Church guidelines, may receive Holy Communion. Please allow our Sunday School children to receive Holy Communion first and wait for the ushers to dismiss your row.

Parish Council Elections:

Please note that elections for the Parish Council will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 following Church services until 2:00pm. Only Stewards in good standing for the year 2019 are eligible to vote in the election. If you have any questions about the election process, do not hesitate to call the Church office.

Metropolis of NJ Christmas Benefit Concert:

The Metropolis of New Jersey is hosting a Christmas Benefit concert on Saturday, December 7^th, at St. John’s Cathedral in Tenafly at 6:00pm. Handel’s “The Messiah” and other Christmas songs and carols will be performed. Tickets are $50 each and our St. Paraskevi Philoptochos will be coordinating the ticket sales for our community along with our church office. Please contact the church office or see Lisa Marcopulos if you are interested in purchasing a ticket.

New Year’s Eve Party:

Ring in the New Year with fabulous food and entertainment right here at St. George! Please support our efforts and join us at our annual New Year’s Eve party which will take place on Tuesday, December 31^st from 9pm – 1am. Music and entertainment by DJ Yorgo. Appetizers, Dinner, BYOB and raffle prizes! Reservations and payment in advance by December 22^nd: $65 for adults and $35 for children 18 and under. After December 22^nd: Adults $75.00 and $45 for children 18 and under. Doors open at 8:30pm. Youth Mission Trip Poinsettia & Wreath Fundraiser:

While on the mission trip, our teenagers partner with local organizations to meet ongoing needs in the community they will serve. They are given the opportunity to participate in a fully integrated service and learning experience not only to assist with needs but also understand the struggles facing the community. We are hoping to alleviate some of the costs associated with the mission trip through fundraising efforts. Hopefully we can count on your support to assist us in keeping the youth of St. George involved in service. Visit our table during “Coffee Hour”. Orders are due by December 1^st and delivery will be on Sunday, December 8^th during coffee hour. Thank you for your support.

Security System and Office Computer Upgrades:

We are kindly asking for donations from our community that will be used to install a Door Access Control System on the church doors and for three new office computers. The cost for the new computers and installation is $3,300 and the remaining $6,700 is for the Door System. A new fob security system will be installed on the front glass doors, the metal doors by the downstairs kitchen, the glass doors in the gym and the rear metal gym doors. The church office will also have a remote button to unlock the doors to allow visitors to enter. All this will greatly enhance the security of our building. Additionally, the computers in the church office are 8 years old and no longer efficient and this is interfering with the productivity of the church office, the office of the Treasurer and our ministries. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Please contact the church office for more information. The Daughters of Penelope (Kronos Chapter #188), along with the Maids of Athena (Hara Chapter #240), will be Christmas caroling and spreading joy to our beloved Saint George parishioners and beyond. Your generous donations will go to the many charities that we support. We welcome the opportunity to visit your homes and sing inspiring Christmas carols and Greek Kalanda on Sunday, Dec. 15^th from 2-6 pm or Saturday, Dec. 21^st from 2-6 pm. Stewardship 2019:

Thank you to all of our Stewards who have made their pledges and donations so far for 2019. Our Saint George parish depends upon your generous donations to envision our goals and enhance our ministries and outreach. So please don’t forget to submit your 2019 Stewardship Pledge card. Nahum the Prophet

The Prophet Nahum had Elkesaeus (Elkosh) as his homeland, and was from the tribe of Symeon; he is seventh in order among the twelve Minor Prophets He prophesied during the time of Hezekias, after the destruction of Samaria (721 years before Christ), but before the ten tribes were taken into captivity; he prophesied against Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. His name means "comforter." His book of prophecy is divided into three chapters.

Barbara the Great Martyr

Saint Barbara was from Heliopolis of Phoenicia and lived during the reign of Maximian.

She was the daughter of a certain idolater named Dioscorus. When Barbara came of age, she was enlightened in her pure heart and secretly believed in the Holy Trinity. About this time Dioscorus began building a bath-house; before it was finished he was required to go away to attend to certain matters, and in his absence Barbara directed the workmen to build a third window in addition to the two her Father had commanded. She also inscribed the sign of the Cross with her finger upon the marble of the bath-house, leaving the saving sign cut as deeply into the marble as if it had been done with an iron tool. (When the Synaxarion of Saint Barbara was written, the marble of the bath-house and the cross inscribed by Saint Barbara were still preserved, and many healings were worked there.) When Dioscorus returned, he asked why the third window had been added; Barbara began to declare to him the mystery of the Trinity. Because she refused to renounce her faith, Dioscorus tortured Barbara inhumanely, and after subjecting her to many sufferings he beheaded her with his own hands, in the year 290.

Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra

This Saint lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, and reposed in 330, As a young man, he desired to espouse the solitary life. He made a pilgrimage to the holy city Jerusalem, where he found a place to withdraw to devote himself to prayer. It was made known to him, however, that this was not the will of God for him, but that he should return to his homeland to be a cause of salvation for many. He returned to Myra, and was ordained bishop. He became known for his abundant mercy, providing for the poor and needy, and delivering those who had been unjustly accused. No less was he known for his zeal for the truth. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council of the 318 Fathers at Nicaea in 325; upon hearing the blasphemies that Arius brazenly uttered against the Son of God, Saint Nicholas struck him on the face. Since the canons of the Church forbid the clergy to strike any man at all, his fellow bishops were in perplexity what disciplinary action was to be taken against this hierarch whom all revered. In the night our Lord Jesus Christ and our Lady Theotokos appeared to certain of the bishops, informing them that no action was to be taken against him, since he had acted not out of passion, but extreme love and piety. The Dismissal Hymn for holy hierarchs, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock ... was written originally for Saint Nicholas. He is the patron of all travellers, and of sea-farers in particular; he is one of the best known and best loved Saints of all time.

Wisdom of the Fathers

We may learn from this that when we ask with faith, God does not give something other than what we ask for, but the very same thing. However, when we ask for one thing and receive something else, it is clear that either we did not make a good request or we did not ask with faith.
