ORTHROS BEGINS AT 8:30AM

The mission of our beloved parish of St. George is to put into practice our Orthodox faith for our spiritual growth while creating fellowship and ministries for all the faithful. It should be our mission to spread the word of the Gospel and build harmony and love within the community and be the example of our Orthodox faith for our youth.

Please inform the church office well in advance of Sunday mornings for all memorials, artoclasias, 40-day blessings and other blessings so as not to disrupt the Divine Liturgy. If any requests or lists of names are received after the Great Entrance they will have to wait until the following Sunday.

****Additionally, in order to preserve the sanctity of the Divine Liturgy, please wait to light candles in the St. Nectarios Chapel at the correct time. If one arrives after the Great Entrance, they will have to wait until the end of Liturgy, while the Andithoron is being given out, to light candles in the Chapel.

Communion Guidelines:

Baptized and Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared, according to the Holy Orthodox Church guidelines, may receive Holy Communion. Please allow our Sunday School children to receive Holy Communion first and wait for the ushers to dismiss your row.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos Sandwich Sunday:

This Sunday, February 23^rd, after liturgy, the Philoptochos is making sandwiches in the upstairs kitchen. Sandwich Sundays, was begun with the goal of preparing sandwiches for the homeless. We try to make a minimum of 225 sandwiches each time. Anyone interested in making a donation to defray the cost, please complete a donation form and return it to the office. It is a wonderful way to remember a loved one, or a special occasion. This month's sandwiches are made possible by a generous donation from Kalliope Papadakos in memory of her deceased loved ones. If anyone would like to help prepare the sandwiches, please come to the upstairs kitchen directly after church. Sandwiches are currently delivered to the St. Paul's Men's Shelter. Feeding the hungry is an important tenet of our mission to help the needy.

Orthodox Christian Adult Education (Chrismation) Classes:

Fr. Peter will be offering the last Orthodox Christian instruction class before Lent on February 27^th. This is a class based on the fundamentals of the Orthodox Church and will also include Bible Fellowship and Discussion as well. This is an excellent opportunity for Orthodox Christians as well as non-Orthodox Christians to receive additional instruction about the Orthodox Christian Church, the traditions involved and many other teachings in the Holy Scriptures. This class is also for those who are considering being baptized or chrismated into the Orthodox faith.

Healing Service:

The next healing service will be on Tuesday, March 10^th at 6:30PM for all our faithful as well as anyone else who would like to attend and be a part of the service. One does not have to be Orthodox or a member of our parish to participate. Please note this is NOT Holy Unction but a service to heal and help those who are suffering physically, spiritually and emotionally. We encourage all our faithful to attend and bring along others.

Parish Elementary Oratorical Festival:

As our older Sunday School students (Grades 7th-12th) prepare their speeches, essays or poems for our annual St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival on Sunday March 22^nd, TODAY our focus will be on our younger students (Little Angels through 4^th). These students will present brief songs and prayers as they highlight some of their lessons from Sunday School. Our 5th & 6th grade will be featured during the judge’s deliberations at the Parish Oratorical Festival on Sunday, March 22^nd, so mark your calendars and plan on spending the afternoon with us that day; our youth will inspire you!

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos:

Wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to our St. George community for your overwhelming support of our “Pasta for a Purpose” luncheon held February 9^th. Special thanks to our ministries, businesses and many others for your donations and assistance with the event. As a result of our community’s outpouring of their “time, treasure and talent” we had a very successful fundraiser and raised over $5,000 which will help off-set the medical expenses of our parishioner Steven Bauer. The Bauer family also extends their gratitude and love to all. May God bless you all and our St. George community.

Saturday of Souls:

The remaining dates for the Saturday of Souls are February 29^th and March 7^th. Please bring your own dish of Koliva to the church by 8:45am and place it on the table and submit your list of names with your offering. If you would like to order your own individual dish of Koliva, the cost is $25 per dish. Please contact the church office and make arrangements by Thursday before the Saturday of Souls. 973-779-2626 or office@stgeorgeclifton.org.

Sponsor A Day Program:

In the New Year 2020 our ambitious goal is to meet our operating budget through Stewardship. It is estimated that the operating expenses of our church average to be $1,400 per steward/family. If this average were to be reached, then the Church would be able to pay all its bills only with Stewardship donations and no other monies. All other funds collected from candles, trays, raffles, fundraisers, etc. could be used towards capital improvements. One way to bridge the gap in the meantime is through our “Sponsor a Day” program. We encourage our parishioners to select a day that has special meaning to them like a birthday, feast day, anniversary or a memorial and make a $250 donation. All donors will be recognized on a calendar located in our atrium. For more information about the program, speak to one of our Parish Council members or Ministry Leaders wearing their “Sponsor A Day” buttons.

Security System and Office Computer Upgrades:

The new office computers have been installed and we are very grateful for all the generous donations and thank you for your support and for assisting us in making our Church office more productive and efficient. However, we are still in need of donations that will be used to install a Door Access Control System on the church doors. The remaining cost for the Door System is $6,700. A new fob security system will be installed on the front glass doors, the metal doors by the downstairs kitchen, the glass doors in the gym and the rear metal gym doors. All this will greatly enhance the security of our building. We ask that you please consider contributing to this project.

Affirmation of Office for Parish Council Members:

On Sunday February 16, 2020 our newly elected Parish Council members received the Affirmation of Office. We congratulate all the faithful parishioners who serve St. George in this meaningful way and pray that God will bless them as they enter another year of service to our Church. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both men and women in the United States, however, it is also one of the most preventable. Take care of your heart by diet, exercise and being a non-smoker. Do you know how to do CPR or how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)? This knowledge has the power to save a life. Contact the Heart Foundation for more information on CPR/AED course. Remember: you’re never too young, and it’s never too late to choose a heart healthy life style.

Judgment Sunday (Meatfare Sunday)

The foregoing two parables -- especially that of the Prodigal Son -- have presented to us God's extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, putting their confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the time given them to work out their salvation, and death suddenly snatch them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this day's feast commemorating Christ's impartial Second Coming, through which we bring to mind that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to each according to his deeds.

It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight -- which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now -- it is clear that today's is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the last day of judgment, truly, everything of this world will come to an end.

All foods, except meat and meat products, are allowed during the week that follows this Sunday.

Polycarp the Holy Martyr & Bishop of Smyrna

This apostolic and prophetic man, and model of faith and truth, was a disciple of John the Evangelist, successor of Bucolus (Feb. 6), and teacher of Irenaeus (Aug. 23). He was an old man and full of days when the fifth persecution was raised against the Christians under Marcus Aurelius. When his pursuers, sent by the ruler, found Polycarp, he commanded that they be given something to eat and drink, then asked them to give him an hour to pray; he stood and prayed, full of grace, for two hours, so that his captors repented that they had come against so venerable a man. He was brought by the Proconsul of Smyrna into the stadium and was commanded, "Swear by the fortune of Caesar; repent, and say, 'Away with the atheists.'" By atheists, the Proconsul meant the Christians. But Polycarp, gazing at the heathen in the stadium, waved his hand towards them and said, "Away with the atheists." When the Proconsul urged him to blaspheme against Christ, he said: "I have been serving Christ for eighty-six years, and He has wronged me in nothing; how can I blaspheme my King Who has saved me?" But the tyrant became enraged at these words and commanded that he be cast into the fire, and thus he gloriously expired about the year 163. As Eusebius says, "Polycarp everywhere taught what he had also learned from the Apostles, which also the Church has handed down; and this alone is true" (Eccl. Hist., Book IV, ch. 14,15).

The Holy Great Martyr Photine, the Samaritan Women

Saint Photine was the Samaritan Woman who encountered Christ our Saviour at Jacob's Well (John 4:1-42). Afterwards she laboured in the spread of the Gospel in various places, and finally received the crown of martyrdom in Rome with her two sons and five sisters, during the persecutions under the Emperor Nero.

Porphyrius, Bishop of Gaza

Saint Porphyrius had Thessalonica as his homeland. He became a monk in Scete of Egypt, where he lived for five years. He went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, after which he spent five years in much affliction in a cave near the Jordan. Stricken with a disease of the liver, he departed to Jerusalem, where he was ordained presbyter and appointed Keeper of the Cross at the age of 45. Three years later he was made Bishop of Gaza. He suffered much from the rulers and pagans of Gaza; but with the friendship of Saint John Chrysostom, and the patronage of the Empress Eudoxia, he razed the temple of the idol Marnas in Gaza and built a great church to the glory of God. He reposed in 450.

The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall.

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' He indicates the dispositions of each, calling the one kids, the other sheep, that He might indicate the unfruitfulness of the one, for no fruit will come from kids; and the great profit from the other, for indeed from sheep great is the profit, as well from the milk, as from the wool, and from the young, of all which things the kid is destitute.
