ST. GEORGE PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

Under the auspices of the Metropolis of NJ we strive to teach and practice our Orthodox Faith and worship God, the Holy Trinity, in the Orthodox way. To grow in Christ and spread the Good News of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, through the various church ministries. To learn the teachings in the word of God and the lives of the Saints and be inspired by them.  As much as it depends on us, we strive to live with love and humility within  our home, our church family and all the people that God puts on our path. 

Metropolis of NJ Holy Cross Celebration in Ocean Grove, NJ

We hope to see our parishioners this Sunday, September 18th at The Great Auditorium, 21 Pilgrim Pathway, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756, for the annual Holy Cross Celebration. Orthros begins at 8:00am and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at 9:30am. As we do every year, all New Jersey Churches will be closed and His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros invites all the faithful to attend services there.

BEEFSTEAK & 50/50 GRAND RAFFLE: 

Please join us at our Beefsteak Fundraiser on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 6:30PM. Tickets are $60 for adults, $30 for children under 12 and children under 5 years old are free. Ticket price includes water and soda.  BYO beer and liquor. There will be Gift Basket raffles as well as our Grand 50/50 drawing which will take place at 9:00PM. Grand Raffle tickets are $20 each. All tickets are available at the church office, during coffee hour or please speak to a Parish Council member if you would like to purchase tickets. REMEMBER, the more Grand Raffle tickets that are sold, the bigger the cash prizes!!! Winner need not be present. 

GOYA 2022: 

GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth Association), is the ministry to Orthodox Christian teenagers ages 12-18 who are in 7th through 12th grade. The GOYA program includes athletics, retreats, outreach, cultural and social activities designed to allow our teenagers to learn and grow as Orthodox Christians.  Email GOYA@StGeorgeClifton.org for more information or to be added to our mailing list. 

Daughters of Penelope, Kronos #188: 

The first DOP meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20th at 7:00PM.  We hope to see all of our Sisters then. If you have not submitted your dues for 2022 ($35), please reach out anytime to Christothea at 973.202.7745.  Meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Sunday Church School: 

St. George is blessed to offer an extensive religious education program with a wonderful team of dedicated teachers. We offer classes for Little Angels (must be 3 years by Oct 1) through 12th grade. Classes will begin on September 25th. There is a family registration fee of $40. New volunteers are always welcome - no teaching experience is needed to help make a difference in the life of a child! Registration forms attached.  For information, email us at: churchschool@stgeorgeclifton.org

St. George Greek School:

Classes began on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 with an Agiasmo blessing. We are all looking forward to welcoming all of our returning and new students! Please call the church office if you have any questions regarding registration. 

Orthodox Life Institute: 

Our classes will begin again on Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00pm IN PERSON in the church’s lower hall. You can register for the class on Sunday, September 11th and pick up the text book. Please come and join us as Dr. Peter Salierno discusses the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the development of the church and contemporary Orthodox thought. 

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos News:

Once again, we will be collecting school supplies to support The Dawn Treader Christian School, a school for underprivileged children, in Paterson, NJ. Please look for our flyer in the online bulletin and purchase any of the supplies listed or you can make a monetary donation. For further information contact Phyllis at pmagiros@verizon.net or 201-602-0632. Donations can be placed in the two marked boxes in the church atrium. Monetary donations can be sent to the Church office, make checks payable to St. Paraskevi Philoptochos or give to a Philoptochos Board Member. We will be collecting supplies until Sunday, September 25, 2022. As always, we thank you for your continued support! 

Feast Day Flower and Icon Donations: 

During the Ecclesiastical year, our Church comes alive with many Liturgical services. It is customary in our faith to decorate icons used during special Feast Day services with flowers. We encourage our parishioners to offer this special $150 donation as a way to remember departed friends and relatives, as well as an expression of love for their family and loved ones. Donations are now being accepted for the following Feast Day celebrations:  

  • September 14 – Elevation of the Holy Cross Donated by Spyro & Athena Demetropoulos in memory of their mother Stavroula Demetropoulos
  • November 9 – St. Nectarios the Wonderworker (various flower decorations).…$500 

Sponsor A Day Program: 

One way to help the church is through our “Sponsor a Day” program. We encourage our parishioners to select a day that has special meaning to them like a birthday, feast day, anniversary or a memorial and make a suggested $250 donation. We would like to thank Mike & Maria Mastrogiannis for sponsoring September 8th, the Nativity of the Theotokos, in honor of Mike’s birthday. For more information about the program, speak to one of our Parish Council members, Ministry Leaders or call the church.

Do not be proud, impatient, given to materialism, greed and gluttony. Be meek and humble, long suffering, full of love, do not have attachment to worldly goods, be considerate of the Heavenly things, be obedient to the word of God and be reasonable.

Eumenius the Wonderworker, Bishop of Gortynia

This Saint took up the monastic life from his youth, and later became Bishop of Gortynia in Crete. He travelled to Rome, and to Thebes in Upper Egypt, where through his prayers he ended a drought; there also, after working many miracles, he reposed in deep old age. His holy relics were returned to Gortynia and buried at the place called Raxos.

Eustathios the Great Martyr, his wife and two children

The holy Martyr Eustathius before his baptism was an illustrious Roman general named Placidas in the days of the Emperor Trajan. While hunting in the country one day, he was converted to the Faith of Christ through the apparition of an uncommonly majestic stag, between whose antlers he saw the Cross of Christ, and through which the Lord spoke to him with a human voice. Upon returning home, he learned that his wife Tatiana had also had a vision in which she was instructed to become a Christian. They sought out the Bishop of the Christians and were baptized, Placidas receiving the name Eustathius, and Tatiana the name Theopiste; their two sons were baptized Agapius and Theopistus. The family was then subjected to such trials as Job endured. Their servants died, all their goods were stolen, and on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem they were scattered abroad, each not even knowing if the others were still alive. By the providence of God, they were united again after many years, and returned to Rome in glory. Nevertheless, when they refused to sacrifice to the idols-a public sacrifice from which no Roman general could be absent-the Emperor Hadrian, who had succeeded Trajan, had them put into a large bronze device in the shape of a bull, which was heated with fire until they died. When their holy bodies were removed, they were found to be without harm. They suffered martyrdom about the year 126.

Jonah the Prophet

The Prophet Jonah, the son of Amathi, of the town of Geth-hopher (IV Kings 14:25), was of the tribe of Zabulon; he prophesied during the years 838-810 before Christ. God commanded him to go to Nineveh, the great city of the Assyrians, and to proclaim that its destruction was nigh at hand because of the sins of its people. But he, as a Prophet who knew the great compassion of God, feared that at his preaching the Ninevites would repent; that God, accepting their repentance in His love for man, would not fulfill Jonah' threats; and that he would be branded a false prophet. So he disobeyed the divine command, and boarded a ship and departed elsewhere. Yet, the sudden and fearful sea-storm and the revelation of Jonah' disbedience caused the sailors to cast him into the sea. A great sea-monster appeared straightway by divine providence, and swallowed him up. For three days and nights he was found in its belly and he prayed, saying the words, "I cried aloud in my affliction unto the Lord my God..." (Jonah 2:3, the Sixth ode of the Holy Psalter). The sea-monster then vomited him up on dry land and he again heard God's command. Wherefore, he went and preached, saying, "In three days, Nineveh shall be destroyed." The people became terrified and all repented. The great, the small, babes at the breast, and even the irrational beasts themselves fasted, and thus, having found mercy from God, they were spared His wrath. Jonah' book of prophecy is divided into four chapters, and is placed fifth in order among the twelve minor Prophets. His three-day sojourn in the sea-monster's belly is an image of our Saviour's three-day burial and His life-bringing Resurrection (Matt. 12:39-40). His name means "dove."

The Conception of St. John the Baptist

This came to pass fifteen months before the birth of Christ, after the vision of the Angel that Zacharias, the father of the Forerunner, saw in the Temple while he executed the priest's office in the order of his course during the feast of the Tabernacles, as tradition bears witness. In this vision, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and said to him, "Thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John" (Luke 1:13). Knowing that Elizabeth was barren, and that both he and she were elderly, Zacharias did not believe what the Angel told him, although he had before him the example of Abraham and Sarah, of Hannah, mother of the Prophet Samuel, and of other barren women in Israel who gave birth by the power of God. Hence, he was condemned by the Archangel to remain speechless until the fulfilment of these words in their season, which also came to pass (Luke 1:7-24).

Thekla the Protomartyr & Equal-to-the-Apostles

This saint was from the city of Iconium. When she was eighteen years of age, she was instructed in the Faith of Christ and the hope of the resurrection by the Apostle Paul, whom also she followed, forsaking her betrothed and espousing a life of virginity for the sake of the Heavenly Bridegroom. Having preached Christ in various cities and suffered many things, she reposed in Seleucia of Cilicia at the age of 90.

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. After this He appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table and He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος· Εἴ τις θέλει ὀπίσω μου ἐλθεῖν, ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀκολουθείτω μοι. ὃς γὰρ ἂν θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι, ἀπολέσει αὐτήν· ὃς δ᾿ ἂν ἀπολέσῃ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχὴν ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ καὶ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, οὗτος σώσει αὐτήν. τί γὰρ ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον, καὶ ζημιωθῇ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ; ἢ τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ; ὃς γὰρ ἐὰν ἐπαισχυνθῇ με καὶ τοὺς ἐμοὺς λόγους ἐν τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ τῇ μοιχαλίδι καὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπαισχυνθήσεται αὐτὸν ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀγγέλων τῶν ἁγίων. Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰσί τινες τῶν ὧδε ἑστηκότων, οἵτινες οὐ μὴ γεύσωνται θανάτου ἕως ἂν ἴδωσι τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐληλυθυῖαν ἐν δυνάμει.

To deny oneself means to give up one's bad habits; to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad thoughts and desires; to suppress every evil thought; to avoid occasions of sin; not to desire or to do anything out of self-love, but to do everything out of love for God. To deny oneself, according to St. Paul means "to be dead to sin. . . but alive to God."
