Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Missions & Benevolence

Silent Auction Update

The Missions & Benevolence Silent Auction has gone online! The traditional silent auction started 5 years ago and raised over $8,000 in support of the St. Luke Mobile Medical Clinic. The online silent auction starts this month, with new items added each month. Bids will be accepted until the end of each month. As in the past, most items will also have a "Buy it NOW" price for those who can't wait till the end of the month. We are restarting with just a few items for the September auction while we assess the process. Click https://forms.gle/LVbSHjioCTizhBUJ7 to register and then to place your bid. Moving forward, the proceeds of the Silent Auction will support our local mission on Rice Street, FOCUS Minnesota, https://www.focusmn.org/. Thank you for your support of the charitable missions of St. George GOC!

Upcoming dates are October 5, November 1, and December 7. Contact George Mastrogiorgis at info@stgeorgegoc.org to reserve a volunteer spot.

Wisdom of the Fathers

And see how He also makes His discourse unexceptionable: not saying at all, "whether you will, or no, you must suffer this," but how? "If any man will come after me."
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century

"I force not, I compel not, but each one I make lord of his own choice; wherefore also I say, 'If any man will.' For to good things do I call you, not to things evil, or burdensome; not to punishment and vengeance, that I should have to compel.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 55 on Matthew 16, 1. B#54, p.339., 4th Century

University of Minnesota Orthodox Christian Fellowship

OCF is an organization that allows us as college students to connect through our faith. Over the past few years, we have continued to grow in numbers and hope to adapt this fall to continue to support each other through this time. We are excited to include those at other colleges in the Twin Cities and beyond in addition to the University of Minnesota students. Please pass on contact information for any students that would be interested in joining us!

Saints and Feasts

Eustathi
September 20

Eustathius the Great Martyr, his wife and two children

The holy Martyr Eustathius before his baptism was an illustrious Roman general named Placidas in the days of the Emperor Trajan. While hunting in the country one day, he was converted to the Faith of Christ through the apparition of an uncommonly majestic stag, between whose antlers he saw the Cross of Christ, and through which the Lord spoke to him with a human voice. Upon returning home, he learned that his wife Tatiana had also had a vision in which she was instructed to become a Christian. They sought out the Bishop of the Christians and were baptized, Placidas receiving the name Eustathius, and Tatiana the name Theopiste; their two sons were baptized Agapius and Theopistus. The family was then subjected to such trials as Job endured. Their servants died, all their goods were stolen, and on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem they were scattered abroad, each not even knowing if the others were still alive. By the providence of God, they were united again after many years, and returned to Rome in glory. Nevertheless, when they refused to sacrifice to the idols-a public sacrifice from which no Roman general could be absent-the Emperor Hadrian, who had succeeded Trajan, had them put into a large bronze device in the shape of a bull, which was heated with fire until they died. When their holy bodies were removed, they were found to be without harm. They suffered martyrdom about the year 126.

FOCUS MN

OUR 10th ANNIVERSARY FUNDRAISER ON 10-10-2020 WILL START WITH A 10-DAY COUNTDOWN ON OCTOBER 1

2020 marks 10 years of service for FOCUS Minnesota. Thanks be to God! We've planned a 10-day virtual celebration that will culminate on Saturday, October 10, 2020. With the theme The Power of Ten, here's how you can get ready to join the party!

• LIKE our Facebook page. Beginning October 1, we'll offer posts about our 10-year impact on individuals and the community.
• SHARE this newsletter with friends who are new to FOCUS, and invite them to sign up to get it by scrolling to the bottom of our home page. During the 10-day countdown, they'll receive informative briefs about FOCUS Minnesota.
• REFLECT on how you're able to support FOCUS Minnesota financially. All levels of giving will help us reach our $30,000 goal.

UPDATE: MILLE LACS BAND OF OJIBWE MISSION TRIP

Our second mission trip to Onamia, MN, in support of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe departs on October 17th, and we are announcing a drive for some specific items:
• Diapers and wipes for the Onamia Head Start.
• Children's jackets and outerwear (new and gently used) for infants through high schoolers.
• *Supplies for housewarming kits, specifically:
- Dish Sets (plates, bowls, glassware, mugs)
- Cutlery Sets
- Cooking and Baking Utensils
- Pots and Pans
*On our previous visit to the shelter, we learned about many obstacles women face when leaving the shelter, including financial and logistical challenges associated with obtaining basic kitchen items. It can cost hundreds of dollars to stock a kitchen with pots, pans, utensils and dishes, and due to the remote location, there are few low-cost options. Your gifts, new or used and in good condition, are especially appreciated!

DONATE: Now through October 9. Contact us to arrange a drop-off time (651-222-0712 or focustwincities@gmail.com).

SORT & PACK: If you're available on Monday, October 12, please contact program manager Courtney Shaw, courtneyshaw349@gmail.com to volunteer.
