Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Tone

Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad!* For the Lord has shown strength with His arm,* trampling down death by death, He has become the first-born of the dead.* He has delivered us from the depths of the realm of death,* and has given great mercy to our souls.

Apolytikion for Sun. of the Holy Fathers in the Eighth Tone

O Christ our God You are above all praise, * You established our Fathers as lights to all the earth. * You led us to the true faith through them. * O Most Bountiful Lord, glory to You.

Resurrectional Kontakion in the Third Tone

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit! Today You arose from the grave O Merciful One,* and lifted us from the gates of death.* Adam exults, and Eve rejoices.* They, together with the Prophets and the Patriarchs,* continually proclaim the Divine Authority of Your power!

Kontakion of The Council Fathers in the Eighth Tone

The preaching of the Apostles* and the decisions of the Fathers* have established the True Faith of the Church,* which she wears as the garment of Truth* fashioned from the Theology on high.* She justly governs and glorifies the great mystery of worship.

Resurrectional Theotokion in the Third Tone

Now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen! O Virgin Birth-Giver of God,* Mediatrix of the Salvation of the human race,* we sing to you a song of praise,* for in the flesh He received from you,* your Son Christ our God suffered the pains of crucifixion,* in order to save us from corruption,* for He is the Lover of mankind.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered in to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

Epistle Reading

The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 13:7-16

Brethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Gospel Reading

The Reading is from John 17:1-13

At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made.

"I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves."

Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the 4th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls from the 13th to the 19th of the present month, we chant the Service to the 630 Holy and God-bearing Fathers who came together for the 4th Ecumenical Council who assembled in Chalcedon in 451, to condemn Eutyches, who taught that there was only one nature, the divine, in Christ after the Incarnation, and Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who illegally received Eutyches back into communion and deposed Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had excommunicated Eutyches.

In the Slavic tradition, on this Sunday, the Fathers of the first six Ecumenical Councils are all commemorated.

Aquila the Apostle among the 70

Saint Aquila, who was from Pontus of Asia Minor, was a Jew by race and a tent-maker by trade. In the year 52 he and his wife Priscilla were in Corinth when Saint Paul first came there. They gave him hospitality, and the Apostle remained with them for many days, himself working at the same trade as they (Acts 18:2-3). And having believed in Christ through Paul, they followed him from that time on, working together with him and suffering perils with him for the sake of the preaching of the Gospel, as he himself testifies concerning them in his Epistle to the Romans, saying: "Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Jesus: who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the nations" (Rom. 16:3-4). When and where they reposed is unknown.

Our Holy Father Joseph the Confessor, Archbishop of Thessalonica

Saint Joseph was the brother of Saint Theodore the Studite (see Nov. 11). He also is called Studite, especially when he is mentioned together with his brother. According to Codinus, both of them composed the canons of the Triodion during the reign of Leo the Armenian, while in the Church of Saint Romanus (see Nov. 18); he is not to be confused with Saint Joseph the Hymnographer (Apr. 3). When Saint Joseph became Archbishop of Thessalonica, he was exiled thrice because of his godly zeal for the holy icons, suffering many hardships, imprisonments in dark dungeons, hunger, thirst, and every tribulation, in the midst of which he departed unto eternal life in 833.

Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles of Kiev

Grandson of Saint Olga, Saint Vladimir ascended the throne of Kiev in 980. Though a zealous idolater, he was illumined by the grace of God, accepted the Christian Faith, and completely changed his ways. He was baptized in Cherson in 988, receiving the name Basil; he came forth from the font not only healed of a blindness lately afflicting him, but also from being passionate and warlike, he became meek, peaceable, and exceedingly godly. Whereas his grandmother had refused marriage with the Emperor in Constantinople (see July 11), he married Anna, sister of the Emperors Basil and Constantine, and was accompanied home by priests from Constantinople. Diligently seeking to spread Christianity throughout his realm like a new Constantine, he destroyed the idols (having the chief diety Perun scourged and then cast into the Dnieper River), and summoned all his subjects to Holy Baptism. He reposed in peace in 1015.

Translation of the Holy Relics of Righteous Seraphim of Sarov

The uncovering of the holy relics of Saint Seraphim of Sarov on July 19, 1903 was attended by many thousands, among them the foremost of the clergy and royalty; the holy Tsar Nicholas II (see July 4) was one of the bearers of the relics in procession, and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth (see July 5) wrote an eyewitness account of the many miracles that took place. Not only had the Saint foretold the coming of the Tsar to his glorification, and that from joy they would chant "Christ is Risen" in summer, but he had also left a letter "for the fourth sovereign, who will come to Sarov." This was Nicholas II, who was given the letter when he came in 1903; the contents of the letter are not known, but when he had read it, the Tsar and future Martyr, though not a man to show his emotions, was visibly shaken. For the life of Saint Seraphim, see January 2.

The Glorious Prophet Elias (Elijah)

Elias of great fame was from Thisbe or Thesbe, a town of Galaad (Gilead), beyond the Jordan. He was of priestly lineage, a man of a solitary and ascetical character, clothed in a mantle of sheep skin, and girded about his loins with a leathern belt. His name is interpreted as "Yah is my God." His zeal for the glory of God was compared to fire, and his speech for teaching and rebuke was likened unto a burning lamp. From this too he received the name Zealot. Therefore, set aflame with such zeal, he sternly reproved the impiety and lawlessness of Ahab and his wife Jezebel. He shut up heaven by means of prayer, and it did not rain for three years and six months. Ravens brought him food for his need when, at God's command, he was hiding by the torrent of Horrath. He multiplied the little flour and oil of the poor widow of Sarephtha of Sidon, who had given him hospitality in her home, and when her son died, he raised him up. He brought down fire from Heaven upon Mount Carmel, and it burned up the sacrifice offered to God before all the people of Israel, that they might know the truth. At the torrent of Kisson, he slew 450 false prophets and priests who worshipped idols and led the people astray. He received food wondrously at the hand of an Angel, and being strengthened by this food he walked for forty days and forty nights. He beheld God on Mount Horeb, as far as this is possible for human nature. He foretold the destruction of the house of Ahab, and the death of his son Ohozias; and as for the two captains of fifty that were sent by the king, he burned them for their punishment, bringing fire down from Heaven. He divided the flow of the Jordan, and he and his disciple Elisseus passed through as it were on dry land; and finally, while speaking with him, Elias was suddenly snatched away by a fiery chariot in the year 895 B.C., and he ascended as though into heaven, whither God most certainly translated him alive, as He did Enoch (Gen. 5:24; IV Kings 2: 11). But from thence also, after seven years, by means of an epistle he reproached Joram, the son of Josaphat, as it is written: "And there came a message in writing to him from Elias the Prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the way," and so forth (II Chron. 21:12). According to the opinion of the majority of the interpreters, this came to pass either through his disciple Elisseus, or through another Prophet when Elias appeared to them, even as he appeared on Mount Tabor to the disciples of Christ (see Aug. 6).

Wisdom of the Fathers

The Trinity is simple unity, unqualified and uncompounded. It is three-in-one, for God is three-personed, each person wholly interpenetrating the others without any loss of distinct personal identity.
St. Gregory of Sinai
On Commandments and Doctrine no. 29, Philokalia Vol. 4 edited by Palmer, Sherrard and Ware; Faber and Faber pg 217-218, 14th century

Take heed, then, often to come together to give thanks to God, and show forth His praise. For when ye assemble frequently in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and the destruction at which he aims is prevented by the unity of your faith.
St. Ignatius of Antioch
Epistle to the Ephesians Ch. 13, 2nd century

Mystical theology teaches us, who through faith have been adopted by grace and brought to the knowledge of the truth, to recognize one nature and power of the divinity, that is to say, one God contemplated in Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It teaches us to know God as a single unoriginate Intellect, self-existent, the begetter of a single, self-existent, unoriginate Logos, and the source of a single everlasting life, self-existent as the Holy Spirit: a Trinity in Unity and a Unity in Trinity.
St. Maximos the Confessor
On the Lord's Prayer, The Philokalia Vol. 2 pgs. 295-296, 7th century

Thus because of the unity in nature, the error of the Greeks in holding that God is many, is utterly destroyed: and again by our acceptance of the Word and the Spirit, the dogma of the Jews is overthrown: and there remains of each party only what is profitable. On the one hand of the Jewish idea we have the unity of God's nature, and on the other, of the Greek, we have the distinction in subsistences and that only. "But should the Jew refuse to accept the Word and the Spirit, let the divine Scripture confute him and curb his tongue. For David says, 'Forever, O Lord, Your Word is settled in heaven'(Ps. 119:89). And again, 'He sent His Word and healed them'(Ps. 107:30). But the word that is uttered is not sent, nor is it forever settled. And concerning the Spirit, the same David says, ' You send forth Your Spirit, they are created' (Ps. 104:30). And again, 'By the word of the Lord were the heavens made: and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth' (Ps. 33:6). Job, too, says, 'The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life' (Job 33:4). Now the Spirit which is sent and makes and establishes and conserves, is not mere breath that dissolves, any more than the mouth of God is a bodily member. For the conception of both must be such as harmonizes with the Divine nature.
St. John of Damascus
An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, Book 1 Chap. 7; Eerdmans pg. 5-6, 8th century

From Father Vincent's Desk

 True Prophets vs. False Prophets

The difference between a True Prophet and a False Prophet can be clarified in the very simple fact that, the True Prophet is one who has received his prophetic vocation directly from Almighty God in a vision or by hearing God’s Word in a Divine commissioning, and on the other hand the False Prophet is one who is self-appointed, and does not serve God but is attached to a cultic pagan religion or temple. The True Prophet has ecstatic revelations and visions sent to them by God, and the False Prophet conjures up his own ecstatic visions through magic or by substance abuse which can lead them to self-induced ecstatic hallucinations. The False Prophet is one who leads people to worship idols, the so-called gods they fashioned out of stone with their own hands. The most prominent False Prophets were the demon worshipers of the Baal cult in the land of Canaan. “The pagan Canaanites who inhabited the land until the Exodus and Conquest were never entirely expelled from the promised land and they continued to make and worship their fertility gods, Baal and Asherah, especially in the Northern Kingdom of Israel. As works of art, the idols must have impressed many Israelites; the accent on fertility in Canaanite religion must also have seemed attractive, both because the Canaanite gods promised prosperity and because their worship included ritualized sex.”(The Old Testament: John S. Custer; pg. 94)

Needless to say, many Israelites participated in this type of worship. On the other hand, the True Prophet is a Holy Messenger chosen and sent by God to preach the Word of God which is the storyline of Salvation. The distinct and exact Words of Almighty God are spoken through the mouth of the True Prophet, the Divine Words which pervade all historical issues, time, and space. When God chooses His True Prophets He fills them with His DivineRuah, from the Hebrew, which means that God fills and breathes into the prophet His Divine Spirit. This Spirit of God falls upon the Prophet and empowers him to pass this same Spirit to the people. When the Spirit and breath of God fall upon a person, it affects a complete emotional, psychological, and spiritual change in that person. In this change, the person is transformed into a new person with a new mission, and they are possessed by the Divine Ruah of God to proclaim His Divine Will and to exclaim that the God of Israel is the Lord of the universe and has created all things. “A prophet possessed by God will suddenly appear and give prophetic oracles. Nothing of what he says will be his own, for he is truly under the control of divine inspiration and has no power of apprehension when he speaks, but serves as the channel for the insistent words of Another’s (God’s) prompting. For prophets are the interpreters of God, Who makes full uses of their organs to set forth what He wills.” “His organs of speech, mouth, and tongue, are wholly in the employ of Another (God)... Who beats on the chords with the skill of a master hand and makes them instruments of sweet music, laden with every harmony.” (The Prophets: Abraham j. Heschel, pg. 429)

To provide a concrete example between a True Prophet and a False Prophet I will use the example of the contest of the prophets found in 1kings 18:21-40, which the battle between the one True Prophet Elijah and the four hundred and fifty False Prophets of Baal, which occurred at Mount Carmel. Elijah like all the other Prophets was called upon by God at a time of crisis when the people of Israel were convinced that worshipping the foreign fertility god Baal would somehow increase their crops and wealth. The True Prophet relentlessly preached that the Lord was the only true God of Israel and that worshipping the true God would lead the people to a good harvest because it is from God that all good gifts flow. This Holy Prophet is in league with God because Elijah is calling the people back to the Covenant with Almighty God. This is in great contrast to the Canaanite prophets of Baal for they used magic to trick people into worshipping idols for they were demon-possessed, and not possessed by the Spirit of God as Elijah.

In the contest of the Prophets, Elijah first confronts the people in verse twenty one telling the people to choose their loyalty either to the True God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, or the false idol god Baal. When the people give him no answer, he challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest, which is to sacrifice a bull but not by lighting it on fire upon the altar, but by simply placing it upon the altar and calling and praying to their god to set it ablaze, which Elijah himself would do after them by calling upon the Lord God to set ablaze his offering. The False Prophet began their pagan ritual of limping around their altar they constructed and they cried out to their god Baal but he did not answer. So, the false prophets, after receiving no answer from their idol god, offered some of themselves in human sacrifice by cutting themselves with swords according to their custom, and they allowed their blood to be offered to the idol and cried louder but still received no answer from Baal. The response to this frenzy by the True Prophet Elijah was in the form of mockery and then a prayer to the God to consume his offering after he ordered the priests of Baal to soak it with water three times. The True Prophet Elijah prayed; “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these at thy word. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that thou, O Lord, art God, and that thou hast turned their hearts back.” (RSV 1Kings 18: 36-37) This prayer of the Prophet Elijah was heard by Almighty God and He completely consumed the sacrificed bull, the altar built by Elijah, the wood, and the water. Then all the people were struck to the heart and knew that the Lord the God of Israel was the only true God and the false prophets of Baal were put to death. (New Collegeville Bible Commentary: Old Testament; Daniel Durken, pg. 541.)

The false cultic prophets like those of Baal in the above example were centered as self-proclaimed prophets in a school of prophets in the nation of Canaan. They, with the support of their king, used magic and elaborate sacrificial rituals to worship the idols of Baal in their temples and to lead the people of Israel astray tricking them into worshipping their stone made gods with the promise of fruitful crops. But as we have seen, the True Prophet of Almighty God Elijah was able to show the people who the True God was and the school of the prophets of Baal was destroyed. When corruption arises in the history of ancient Israel God always sends one of His True Prophets to bring the people back to their covenantal relationship with Him. There can only be one True Prophet at any given time because the Divine Spirit or Ruah of Almighty God is resting upon him, and this Divine Spirit is then extended from the Prophet to all the people. This sharing of the Spirit of God ultimately leads the people back to upright living according to God’s Law which is their rule life and the Covenant of Salvation.

Saint Mary's News

We are The Church of the Week

At Geminellis Italian Bistro we are the Church of the Week (or of the day) on Sunday, July 14th, that's today! What does that mean? Well, it means that we can all go over to this great Italian Resturant as a Parish Family and have a meal together and receive 10% off the total cost! Plus, news travels in numbers, we would be telling the owners of the Resturant and its patriots that we are Orthodox Christian who go to Saint Mary's Orthodox Church! I thought that this would be a nice way to do one more parish event before Pani and I move to Ambridge PA. For all who are interested, we will meet in the hall after Liturgy and head over to Princeton!

Moving Helpers Needed

Father Vincent and Pani Christyn would like to ask all who are able to help them pack up their Uhaul truck on Sunday, July 21st after Divine Liturgy and Coffee Hour. All of the items that need to be in boxes will be packed prior to that Sunday so helping would simply involve carrying boxes and items from the house and packing them in the moving truck. If anyone is willing to lend a helping hand, please let Father or Pani know as soon as possible.

Diocesan Sobor Delegates

The 24th Diocesan Sobor will be held in Johnstown Pennsylvania from October 13th-16th. Every Parish of our Diocese is able to send up to 3 Delegates to represent their respective Parish Church. We discussed at the Parish Council Meeting last Sunday that the requirements for representing Our Parish Church of Saint Mary's are that you must be Orthodox for at least one year and be willing to journey to Johnstown PA. Overnight accommodations for the three days will be paid for by our parish for anyone who would like to be a Delegate. If you are interested please see or contact Father Vincent or Michael Peters for more information. The deadline for Delegates will be July 28th.
