SUNDAY OF THE VENERATION OF THE PRECIOUS CROSS
On the Third Sunday of Great Lent in our Church,
We respectfully venerate the precious Cross.
We recall the Crucifixion of Christ our Savior.
With compunction we kiss His precious Cross.
We don’t venerate a simple cruciform wood.
We venerate Christ’s Divine, precious Cross.
Christ saved us with His death on the Cross;
When His human Body was nailed on the Cross.
Whatever touches God with faith is sanctified,
As the former execution instrument of the cross.
God takes and uses the everyday simple elements;
Through them He bestows upon us His divine Grace.
He takes the simple, running, refreshing water;
He sanctifies it with His Grace into Holy Water.
He takes the pure, virgin oil of the olive tree,
And He makes it Holy Unction, for our healing.
To the bread and wine, that we offer with piety,
We invoke with fervent prayer the Holy Spirit
To descent, to sanctify us and our gifts to Him;
In order to partake of them for our salvation.
We, the inquisitive mortals on our planet earth,
Want to analyze everything, instantaneously.
But the inscrutable and divine realities of God,
We can only experience with awe; mystically.
Our Merciful, Benevolent God invites us daily,
To come to His Temple with abiding, living faith .
To receive the H. Sacraments with awe and piety.
Our spiritual experience will solve our rational quest.
The Uncreated Grace of God is not illogical or irrational;
His Grace is Divine, Spiritual, invisible, super-logical.
Our five senses are incapable of comprehending it;
Our soul and noetic mind shine when they experience it.
You cannot see God’s Grace coming from somewhere.
But you experience it in your being, as it enlightens you.
Recall the shining Grace on St. Seraphim’s of Sarov face,
His whole being shone with grace to enlighten his visitor.
Our Church invites us to approach the Precious Cross:
To venerate the Divine Cross with awe and compunction.
His divine Grace, which mortals receive through the Cross,
God also will bestow upon us, to make us His friends.
With love,
Fr. John P. Angelis
With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.
The holy Martyr Calliopius was from Perga in Pamphylia, brought up in piety by his godly mother Theocleia. When the persecution of Maximian broke out, Saint Calliopius presented himself of his own accord before the Governor Maximus in Pompeiopolis of Galatia. After he had suffered many torments, his mother visited him in prison and encouraged him in his martyrdom. After this, his thrice-blessed mother, upon learning that he was to be crucified on Holy and Great Thursday, bribed the tyrants to defer it one day, that he might imitate the Lord's Crucifixion on the same day that He suffered it. The holy Martyr Calliopius received the crown of martyrdom on Holy and Great Friday in the year 304, being crucified upside down.

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6.
BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."
Sunday of the Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1
The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy (with a visiting Priest). That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available. In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages. Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek. If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy with Father John in the Seattle area. During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle. The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is

On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service with a Parish Fellowship Time. This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.
All are welcome to join in the celebration these Christian Orthodox Services.
Saint Mary and Saint Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church. This Coptic Church is currently holding services at the St. Nectarios Church. A Saturday or Sunday Holy Liturgy with a visiting Priest is nromally held once per month. All are invited to attend. A fellowship time and Christian Study Class for older students normally follows the Services. For more information, please contact Nader Samaan (nader.samaan@yahoo.com) or access the website:
