Third Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Brethren, I, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.

ON SUNDAY…OCF SPAGHETTI LUNCHEON…Please join us for the OCF famous spaghetti luncheon after Divine Liturgy in the Fellowship Hall. Let’s welcome our local college students! Suggested minimum donation is $10 and free for children under 9 yrs. old.

 

ON SUNDAY...PHILOPTOCHOS...Our Ladies of Philoptochos welcomes our OCF students today. Please see Maria Stasios or Irene Sotiriou in our Hellenic center during the luncheon to receive a welcome gift.  Let us know if anyone is unable to go home for thanksgiving- we would love to have you join one of our families for dinner on thanksgiving!

ONLINE GIVING...We have an online giving system in place on our website that can be used for conveniently making donations towards stewardship pledges. The pertinent donation buttons are located on the left pane of the homepage at www.stnicholaswilmington.org as well as on the Stewardship page of our website at www.stnicholaswilmington.org/Stewardship.html .

 

During Divine Liturgy each Sunday throughout the year we have a staffed nursery with attendant available for the use of our youngest members from birth to age 5. If your child needs a wiggle break or a place to listen to the Divine Liturgy in a different environment, please feel free to use this provided Service.
 

We can provide hearing assistance systems. If you would like to use the system while you are attending Liturgical Services in person, please see an attendant at the pangari stand.

 

We welcome you to worship with us, whether you are an Orthodox Christian or this is your first visit to an Orthodox Church, we are pleased to have you with us.  Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to Baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the church, ALL are invited to receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not sacramental, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church.

Holy Martyr Romanus

Saint Romanus, who was from Antioch, lived during the reign of Maximian. He presented himself before Asclepiades the Eparch, and rebuked him, saying, "The idols are not gods; even a little child could tell you that." Then the Saint asked that a child be brought in from the market, that he might be the judge of the matter at hand. Therefore, when the child was asked, "Which God must we worship?" he replied, "Christ." The child was beaten mercilessly and beheaded at the command of the tyrant. As for Saint Romanus, his tongue was cut out, and then he was cast into prison, where he was strangled in the year 305.

Obadiah the Prophet

The Divine Scriptures do not tell us with any certainty when the Prophet Obadiah lived nor what was his homeland. Thus, some say that he is that Obadiah who was Ahab's steward, who, because of Jezebel's wrath, hid one hundred prophets in a cave and fed them with bread and water (III Kings 18:4), and that he later became a disciple of Elias the Prophet about 903 B.C. But others surmise from the words of the same prophetical book that he is somewhat later than Joel (celebrated on Oct. 19). He is also called Obdiu, or Abdiu, or Obadiah; his name means "servant of God." His book of prophecy, which consists of only one chapter, is ranked fourth among the minor Prophets.

According to the tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was brought to the Temple at three years of age, where she was consecrated to God and spent her days until she was fourteen or fifteen years old; and then, as a mature maiden, by the common counsel of the priests (since her parents had reposed some three years before), she was betrothed to Joseph.

Congratulations to our five Metropolitan's Choice Honorees and our 133 Honorees from 69 of our parishes in our eight southeastern states. More than 450 of our Atlanta Metropolis parishioners attended the Honors Banquet on Saturday, November 10th. Our Metropolis Annunciation Cathedral was packed on Sunday morning, November 11 when His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios presided at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, assisted by Fr. Constantine Xanthakis, Fr. George Tsahakis, Fr. Paul Kaplanis, Fr. Efstratios Anthony, Fr. Christos Mars, Fr. Gregory Edwards, and Dn. George Malanos. Congratulations to our 2018 Honorees. Archangel Michael Feast & Honors Week Has Begun

On November 8th, in the Metropolis of Atlanta's Archangel Michael Chapel, Metropolitan Alexios, celebrated a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in commemoration of the Feast of Archangel Michael and the Heavenly Hosts (Angels). Archangel Michael is the Patron Saint of the Atlanta Metropolis. Celebrating in the Holy Altar with Him were Fr. George Tsahakis, Chancellor, Fr. Paul Kaplanis and Fr. Christos Mars, Dean & Ephemerios, respectively of Annunciation Cathedral. His Eminence hosted a beautiful brunch afterwards for our Atlanta parishioners, visitors, and Metropolis staff. Chronia Polla to all celebrating their Name Day. We pray for safe travels for our Metropolis Council, Metropolis Philoptochos Board, Vicars, Archons, Endowment Foundation Board, and HDF Committee members who will be meeting throughout the rest of this week in Atlanta. We are proud of our 2018 Archangel Michael Honorees and look forward to Saturday's Banquet and Sunday's Hierarchical Liturgy at Annunciation Cathedral in Atlanta.

Deeply saddened and profoundly concerned, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America condemns the heinous and murderous shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. Regrettably, it has become all too common for peace to be broken by bloodshed.
