Haros

 

 If you are too busy for Church, you are too busy

The Gospel tells a story of a great banquet. Many were invited, but very few actually attended using all sorts of excuses. One had just bought a new farm, one had just purchased five oxen, and another had just been married. Excuses, excuses, excuses! The invited guests begged to be excused from the banquet. As a result the master of the banquet not only excused them, he banned them for EVER attending even if they had changed their mind saying, “none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.” (Luke 14.24)

 

This parable is to teach us about the kingdom of God. We have all been invited. When Jesus Christ came two thousand years ago to establish His Church, we received word that the banquet was ready. It is now up to us to not only accept the invitation, but actually attend the banquet. The banquet is heaven and you have been invited. What will your response be?

 

As you might imagine I have heard all sorts of excuses in my years as a priest, but some just don’t want to attend. One time I was meeting with someone and I asked as I often do, “So what about coming to church more?” His response, while shocking to me at the time, shouldn’t have been. He said, “I’m going to be honest. I have no intention to attend Church very often. I would rather not lie.”

 

Attending Church services, most especially the Divine Liturgy, is our opportunity to accept Christ’s invitation to join Him at the banquet. The Divine Liturgy is more than just a Sunday gathering of like-minded Christians. The Divine Liturgy is the banquet. The Divine Liturgy is heaven on earth and you have been invited to attend. Will you attend or will you make excuses like the three men in the parable? Some will attend while others will make excuses. You may have just bought a new house, or you may have paperwork for the business. You may even be expecting family from out of town. The parable is meant to teach how God will respond to us if we beg to be excused. He will excuse us, not just for now but ban us for later. If you believe the parable then you should know, if you are too busy for Church, you are too busy.

Dear St. Nicholas Cathedral Family,

 

Christ is Risen! I know it sounds off saying this in December but today we will be discussing Pascha, the glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the fundamental truth and absolute fact of the Christian faith. It is the central experience and focus of the Church. It confirms the authenticity of Christ's remarkable earthly life and vindicates the truth of His teaching. It seals all His redemptive work: His life, the model of a holy life; His compelling and unique teaching; His extraordinary works; and His awesome, life-creating death. Christ's Resurrection is the guarantee of our salvation. Together with His Ascension it brings to perfection God's union with us for all eternity.

 

The Resurrection made possible the miracle of the Church, which in every age and generation proclaims and affirms "God's plan for the universe, the ultimate divinization of man and the created order." The profound experience of and the unshakable belief in the risen Lord enabled the Apostles to evangelize the world and empowered the Church to overcome paganism. The Resurrection discloses the indestructible power and inscrutable wisdom of God. It disposes of the illusory myths and belief systems by which people, bereft of divine knowledge, strain to affirm the meaning and purpose of their existence. Christ, risen and glorified, releases humanity from the delusions of idolatry. In Him grave-bound humanity discovers and is filled with incomparable hope. The Resurrection bestows illumination, energizes souls, brings forgiveness, transfigures life’s, creates saints, and gives joy.

 

The Resurrection has not yet abolished the reality of death. But it has revealed its powerlessness (Hebrews 2:14-15). We continue to die because of the Fall. Our bodies decay and fall away. "God allows death to exist but turns it against corruption and its cause, sin, and sets a boundary both to corruption and sin." Thus, physical death does not destroy our life of communion with God. Rather, we move from death to life - from this fallen world to God's reign.

 

Christ has Risen from the dead, by death trampling upon Death, and has bestowed life upon those in the tombs!!!

"Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me, Your servant, from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ.  Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete health.  For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen."

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Mode

When the tidings of the resurrection from the glorious angel was proclaimed unto the women disciples and our ancestral sentence also had been abolished to the Apostles with the boasting did they proclaim that death is vanquished ever more and Christ Our God has risen from the dead and granted to the world His great mercy.

Apolytikion of the Church in the 4th Mode

An example of the Faith and a life of humility. As a teacher of abstinence you did inspire and lead your flock and through the truthfulness of your deeds were exalted by greatness through your humility; uplifting all and by poverty gaining wealth. Father and Hierarch St. Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved.

Brethren, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Our Righeous Mother Blessed Empress Theophania

Saint Theophania, who was born in Constantinople, was of royal lineage. Instructed in letters, and adorned with many virtues, she was united in marriage to Emperor Leo the Wise (reigned 886-912). But counting the glory of the earthly kingdom as nought, she spent her nights and days in serving God with psalms and hymns and prayers, working various good deeds until she surrendered her spirit to God in peace, while still in her youth, being, according to some, about twenty years of age, according to others, twenty-seven. Her holy relics are still preserved in the patriarchal church in Constantinople as a source of healing for those that draw nigh with faith and longing. She was also the builder of the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropigeal Monastery of St. Anastasia the Protector from Potions in Chalke (883).

Forefathers

11th Sunday of Luke

On the Sunday that occurs on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we commemorate Christ's forefathers according to the flesh, both those that came before the Law, and those that lived after the giving of the Law.

Special commemoration is made of the Patriarch Abraham, to whom the promise was first given, when God said to him, "In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed" (Gen. 22:18). This promise was given some two thousand years before Christ, when Abraham was seventy-five years of age. God called him and commanded him to forsake his country, parents, and kinsmen, and to depart to the land of the Canaanites. When he arrived there, God told him, "I will give this land to thy seed" (Gen. 12:7); for this cause, that land was called the "Promised Land," which later became the country of the Hebrew people, and which is also called Palestine by the historians. There, after the passage of twenty-four years, Abraham received God's law concerning circumcision. In the one hundredth year of his life, when Sarah was in her ninetieth year, they became the parents of Isaac. Having lived 175 years altogether, he reposed in peace, a venerable elder full of days.

Stewardship 2018 One day, a person complained to their priest that the Church and Christianity is one continual “give, give, give.” To which the priest replied, “Thank you very much for the finest definition of Christianity I have ever heard. You’re right, Christianity is all about a constant “give, give, give.”

God giving His only Son to the world to show His unconditional love. His Son Jesus giving His life on the cross to forgive our sins and destroy death. Then our Lord’s disciples giving all they had to make sure God’s Good News of love was preached to all people everywhere. They not only gave away their homes and businesses, but even gave up their lives as martyrs in gratitude to God!
