How to Engage in Church “Online”
Churches have closed their doors to parishioners during the Coronavirus (COVID19) Pandemic. Since you are unable to attend church services in person, the Cathedral does livestream every service for you to watch online. While this is not the ideal, we understand that extraordinary times call for extraordinary efforts. Again, we understand that this is not the ideal, but our willingness to remain at home for the safety of others, is an act of love and IT IS NOT A SIN. Here are a few guidelines for you to benefit most from being home during church services.
-
Treat the time as you would if you were actually in Church. During the hours of services, avoid other activities such as playing games, reading the news, catching up online, etc. Even if you are not “watching online” this is a good practice every Sunday morning at least. Keeping Sunday morning as sacred time is a good practice year-round.
-
On Sunday morning, act as if you are actually attending Church.
-
Set your alarm
-
Take a shower/bath
-
Get dressed - at the very least get out of your pajamas
-
Be prepared for Church to start ON TIME
-
Light your candle and incense on your home altar. If possible locate an icon or two near your screen (laptop, tablet, smart tv, etc) to help keep focused on church.
-
Gather the family ON TIME together around the screen
-
Turn off all other programs or apps on your device, and your phone. You don’t answer the phone at Church, you shouldn’t answer during “watching online”.
-
During the service, act as if you are actually in Church. Bow when we bow, sit when we sit, cross yourself when cross ourselves etc. Sing the hymns. Recite the Creed and Lord’s Prayer with us.
-
If you would normally fast on Sunday morning for Holy Communion, YOU SHOULD STILL FAST despite the fact you are forced to remain home.
-
Fight the temptation to “do other things” during services. Remember we are trying to act as much as possible like we are actually in church.
It is my prayer these basic guidelines will assist you in “watching online” during this temporary situation. I appreciate this is not an ideal situation, but we will make do, by God’s grace for His glory.
