Questions of Faith

 What does it mean to have faith in Jesus Christ? Most people would answer by saying they believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came into the world to save sinners. And they would be correct, but is it enough to offer these few words about belief? The difficult answer unfortunately is, “NO!” It is not enough to just believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He came into the world to save sinners. After all…..even the devil believes in Jesus Christ.

 When faced with the hard realities of struggle and sickness the disciples of Jesus were unable to heal a boy sick with epilepsy. When they asked Jesus why they were unable to heal him Jesus said, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17.20) About the sick boy Jesus said, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17.21)

 There will be times in our life when “mental faith” in Jesus is not sufficient. By this I mean that we must use that faith by offering ourselves to Jesus as a sacrifice of prayer and fasting and be willing to embrace whatever answer God offers for our prayer….and sometimes the answer is going to be ‘NO.” It will take great faith to accept this answer from God, since as fallen human beings we have been trained to think we should receive everything we want when we want it.

 Does this mean that we will ‘get whatever we want’ every time we pray and fast? I can’t tell you whether we will or will not always get what we want. I can tell you that when we pray and fast, we learn better WHAT to want. We pray and fast not just to ‘check some box’ on a list of requirements. Prayer and fasting isn’t an application for a job in heaven.  It takes a deep faith, the sort of faith expressed in the self-sacrifice of fasting and prayer, to accept that it’s not always about getting what we want. It’s about what God wants.

Βλέπουμε στο ευαγγελιο αυτής της Κυριακής ένα πατέρα που παρακαλάει να γιατρέψει επειγόντως το γιο του. Μέσα στο πανικό του μας λέει το ευαγγέλιο ζητάει βοήθεια πρώτα από τους Αποστόλους να κάνουν το θαύμα και έπειτα από τον Χριστό. Ας τα πάρουμε ένα ένα τα βήματα στο σήμερα στην εποχή μας . 

Τι κάνουμε λοιπόν όταν διακατεχόμαστε από πανικό? Καταφεύγουμε κατευθείαν στο Χριστό η στον πρώτο τυχόντα που θα βρεθεί μπροστά μας ? Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι πως ο πανικός και η ανάγκη για βοήθεια πολλές φορές μας θολώνει το μυαλό πράγμα που μας οδηγεί σε λάθος επιλογές μας ως προς το τι θα βοηθήσει εμάς η τα παιδιά μας και γενικά που θα βρούμε και εμείς το ΘΑΥΜΑ, τη θεραπεία μας. Οι απόστολοι του Χριστού βλέπουμε πως τελικά δεν μπόρεσαν να κάνουν κάποιο θαύμα και ρώτησαν το Χριστό το «γιατί» οπως ακριβώς κάνουμε και εμείς όταν συνεχώς ζητάμε από το Θεό να μας έρθουν στη ζωή μας όλα όπως τα θελουμε και όταν αυτό δεν συμβαίνει τον ρωτάμε γιατι Θεέ μου ? Αφού έχω πίστη και προσεύχομαι κάθε μέρα γιατί όλα πανε τόσο ανάποδα στη ζωή? Το σημερινό ευαγγέλιο μας διδάσκει ότι η πίστης μας δεν είναι αρκετή από μόνη της . 

Μπορεί να πιστεύεις αλλά όταν κάθεσαι κάθε Κυριακή στο καναπέ σου με το καφεδάκι και συμμετέχεις στη Θεία λειτουργία μέσω οθόνης τηλεόρασης δε σημαίνει ότι εκκλησιάζεσαι ,όπου την ίδια στιγμή πας στο μάρκετ στη δουλειά σου οπουδήποτε άλλου. Η πίστη αδελφοί μου δεν είναι το μαγικό κουμπάκι που μπορούμε να πατάμε οποιαδήποτε ώρα και στιγμή και να παραγγέλνουμε θαύματα οπως παραγγέλνουμε προϊοντα απο την Άμαζον.  Όπως όταν πρέπει να πάμε στο γυμναστήριο να τραντάξουμε όλο το σώμα μας για να χάσουμε βάρος κατά τον ίδιο τρόπο θα πρέπει να σηκωθούμε απο το καναπέ και να έρθουμε στο πνευματικό γυμναστήριο στο Ναό μας δείχνοντας έτσι σεβασμό στο Χριστό που μας προσκαλεί κάθε Κυριακή να τον βάλουμε μέσα μας . 

Το ίδιο ισχύει και κάθε Πέμπτη που έχουμε παράκληση στον Αγ.Νικόλα τον πατέρα μας που είναι ζωντανός αόρατος προστάτης μας . Πως θα μας βοηθήσει στη δύσκολη στιγμή αν μας προσκαλεί στο σπίτι του καθε εβδομάδα και εμείς επιλέγουμε να αγνοούμε συνεχώς τη πρόσκληση του? Τα θαύματα στη ζωή μας είναι ένα συνδυασμός πίστης και προσευχής μαζί ταυτόχρονα. Δεν έχει σημασία ποιο είναι το πρόβλημα μας αν είναι υγείας η όποιο άλλο πρόβλημα και πως προήλθε το πρόβλημα στη ζωή μας.  Σημασία έχει να βρούμε τη θεραπεια . Έχουμε τεράστιο προνόμιο να βλέπουμε τόσα καθημερινά θαύματα ως Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί και μέσα στο πανικό και στη στεναχώρια μας αναζητούμε οπουδήποτε αλλού βοήθεια εκτός εκκλησίας.

Η αλήθεια είναι πως ακόμα και για μένα είναι δύσκολο κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας να προσεύχομαι όμως όταν μπαίνω στο Ναό στις τόσες καθημερινές ακολουθίες που έχουμε ηρεμώ μέσα μου αυτόματα χωρίς καμία ιδιαίτερη προσπάθεια. Εμείς οι ιερείς ως άλλοι απόστολοι Χριστού δεν ήμαστε σε θέση να σου προσφέρουμε το θαύμα αλλά κάθε μέρα στο Ναό σε προσκαλούμε να σου δείξουμε το δρόμο για το «Θαύμα» που ζητάς απο το Θεό και τα εργαλεία που χρειάζεσαι για αυτό οπως έντονη προσευχή με επιμονή και κυρίως υπομονή. Μη ξεχνάς πως μια μέρα θα σου πει ο Χριστός σε κάλεσα αλλά δεν ήρθες, ήμουν εκεί για σένα αλλά δεν με ζήτησες . Έστειλα τους αποστόλους μου αλλά δεν τους πλησίασες να ρωτήσεις αλλά έκανες το γιατρό της ψυχής σου μόνος η μόνη σου .Γίνεται να πάμε στο Νοσοκομείο και απλά να κάτσουμε σε μια γωνιά και να γίνουμε αυτόματα καλά ? Ο Γιατρός είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός και τα τηλέφωνα μας είναι ανοιχτά ανά πάσα ωρα και στιγμή μας χρειαστείτε για πνευματικές συνταγές .  Αμην 

Greetings in Christ,

In my last week of scheduled meetings I’ve come across another wonder of dedication, involvement and care for Christ’s ministry in this beautiful Church. What may seem unspectacular, I find great appreciation for. That in our world of uncounted responsibilities-of love and labor which are shouldered with care from week to week while the espoused activities of our lives vie for our undivided attention. There are those who are willing to go above and beyond the normative bar, without praise or glory, for the sake of their active love for God in his Church.

May the God of our Salvation grant those who labor in Love for His sake, through the nurturing of our souls and bodies toward the Christian life, strength, wisdom, and fortitude to continue His work. May God enlighten us also, so that we might hear His call, and rise to the occasion.

I would like you to draw your attention now to an aspect of the Liturgical life in our Church. How many of us are aware that each day of the week is dedicated in Orthodox Christianity as one of the many tools that help us pray in glorification of our God? There are in fact three liturgical cycles that we participate in. These cycles are Yearly, Weekly, and Daily. The daily cycle is as such; Monday is dedicated to the Angels of God. Tuesday is dedicated to St. John the Forerunner. Wednesday is Dedicated to the Holy Cross. Thursday is dedicated to St. Nicholas along with the Holy Apostles. Friday is dedicated to the crucifixion of Christ. Saturday is dedicated to the Theotokos, All Saints, and our departed. Sunday is the small Pascha, dedicated to His Resurrection.

 Starting with this Thursday marks the beginning of a beautiful practice in our local Church. In place of daily vespers, the Supplicatory Canon (Paraklesis) of St. Nicholas will be Chanted. Let us join together as a Community under the watchful eyes of our Creator, to ask for help from our great Intercessor.

I have an activity for us all to take home this week in the spirit of personal spiritual growth and development. I would like for us to take this opportunity to reflect on the aforementioned Liturgical themes during the cycle of the coming week. Starting today with our small Pascha, reflect on Christ's Resurrection. On Monday, reflect upon the Angelic Hosts, so on and so forth throughout the week. We can reflect on these themes by adding a prayer to our morning and evening prayers, our prayers at mealtimes, or taking some time for reflection in thought. This “challenge” is for all ages, excluding none.
