Dean's Message

Frathanasios-3

How Will You Help the Lord This Week?

In the Gospel of Luke we hear the calling of the first disciples of Christ while they were “off duty” from their day of fishing. Jesus “saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.” (Luke 5.2) Their day was finished and I’m sure the fishermen were looking forward to a few moments of rest after a long day at work, but the Lord had other plans. “Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.” (Luke 5.2-3)

Simon was faced with a common struggle we all face today; whether or not to give our time to the work of God and His Church or rest a bit. The need for rest is the single most common reason people miss Church on Sunday morning. I can’t imagine anyone would have given it a second thought if Simon had said, “Excuse me please, but I just returned from a long time of fishing and we have to fix our nets and get some rest before we go out again. Can you use someone else’s boat?”

In the context of hearing the Gospel this excuse sounds ridiculous but we use it every time we don’t come to Church or refuse to assist the Lord in getting His message to the world. If Simon had said “no,” then the multitudes would not have heard the Gospel from Christ. And if we say “no,” many more will go without hearing the Good News that Jesus Christ has to offer the world.

When Simon allowed God to use him and his boat for the Gospel, many wonderful things took place. “They caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.” (Luke 5.6) When we allow Jesus Christ and His Church to use our talents and our gifts for His purpose of reaching out to the thousands needing the sort of hope that only God provides, great things will happen also in our lives.

There are many ways we can help the Lord and His Church. We can serve as youth ministry volunteers. We can offer our talents by making basic repairs to our buildings. Even changing light bulbs and air condition filters helps Christ and His Church. You might be thinking that changing light bulbs doesn’t help people hear the Gospel of Christ, but you would be wrong.

Everything the Church does, from routine maintenance to catechism classes helps to bring the Gospel to the world. You wouldn’t think Christ needed a boat to spread the Gospel. The Church needs light bulbs to teach. The Church needs AC to have ministries, especially in Florida. Whether it is volunteering or offering financial assistance so the Church can hire professionals, it is all Stewardship. Stewardship is how we help God and His Church.

How will YOU help the Lord get His message out this week?

Greetings in Christ!

On thursday the 15th of September we had the distinct pleasure of hosting a Pan-Orthodox event on the Feast of St. Nikitas. We came together for Orthros and Divine Liturgy as the Orthodox Community of the greater Tampa Bay area. Our dear Hierarch Bishop Sevastianos of Zelon presided over the service, and offered us all encouragement in our faith during his sermon. Following Divine Liturgy the clergy enjoyed fellowship and Lunch together hosted by our Parish Council President Mr. Nikitas Manias on the occasion of his Name Day. This was a beautiful way to bring our Orthodox family tree together. And as many said that day, it was the first time in recollection for a communal offering of this caliber to be held in the greater Tampa Bay area.

I would like to draw your attention to a couple of calendar events in this coming week. On Monday, our Orthodoxy 101 class will begin! This class is the perfect opportunity to increase your knowledge of our Historical Church, and the fountain of Theology within. Please join us on Monday nights, from 7:30 to 8:30 PM in the Spanos Pappas Community Center Conference Room.

On Saturday the first of October, our Greek Folk Dance Ministry is hosting their first event of the year! We welcome you to join us at the Kalimniko from 7-11 PM  for their Taverna Night!

My weekly challenge for us this week is to read the lives of the saints. On each day, there is a list of the saints whom we remember. Each saint has a unique story, one that brought them the Crown of Glory, and one that connects all of them to Christ. You can find the saints of the day in a few different ways, but the easiest or most accessible is most likely through a phone application. Some of us may have a book of the lives of the saints which would come in handy. One app that may be useful to those who would benefit from having some Orthodox tools at their fingertips is the Daily Readings App. in this app you can find the scripture readings of the day, the commemoration of the saints, and feasts, our fasting schedule, and a list of common prayers!

So as a way to start or end your day with spiritual nourishment, I am inviting all of us to read the life of at least one saint being commemorated on each day of this week.

If you do not have this application on your smartphone, I highly recommend downloading it.

Euphrosyne
September 25

Euphrosyne of Alexandria

Our righteous Mother Euphrosyne, who lived during the reign of Saint Theodosius the Younger (408-450), was the daughter of Paphnutius of Egypt. Forsaking her father and his wealth, she renamed herself Smaragdus, and pretending to be a eunuch of the imperial palace, she dressed herself as a man and entered a monastery of men where her identity remained unknown until her repose thirty-eight years later.

"Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me, Your servant, from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ.  Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete health.  For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Mode

Angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, and those guarding it became like dead, and at Your grave Mary was standing, seeking Your most pure body. You plundered Hades, not being tempted by it; You encountered the virgin, granting life. O Lord, who rose from the dead, glory to You!

Apolytikion for Euphrosyne of Alexandria in the Plagal 4th Mode

In thee the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up thy cross, thou didst follow Christ, and by thy deeds thou didst teach us to overlook the flesh, for it passeth away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Euphrosyne, thy spirit rejoiceth with the Angels.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 2nd Mode

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

1st Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

1st Sunday of Luke

Gospel Reading

1st Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 5:1-11

At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

1st Sunday of Luke

Wisdom of the Fathers

He who truly wishes to believe in God must be lifted above himself, his mind, and even the whole world. For this reason, the value of faith is considered higher than the value of man. It is even higher than the value of the whole world. Therefore, the reward of faith should be higher than all of man's possessions along with the glories of this world. The reward of faith is God.
Fr. Matthew the Poor
Orthodox Prayer Life: The Interior Way, p. 74, 20th century

What is it that I love when I love you? Not the beauty of a body or the comeliness of time. Nor the luster of the light pleasing to the eyes, nor the sweet melodies of all manner of songs, nor the fragrance of flowers, ointments and spices, not manna and honey, nor limbs welcome to the embrace of the flesh - I do not love these when I love my God. And yet there is a kind of light, a kind of voice, a kind of fragrance, a kind of foods, a kind of embrace, when I love my God, who is the light, voice, fragrance, food, embrace of the inner man, where there shines into the soul that which no place can contain, and there sounds forth that which time cannot end, where there is fragrance which no breeze disperses, taste which eating does not make less, and a clinging together which fulfillment does not terminate. It is this that I love when I love my God.
