How Much Should My Stewardship Commitment Be?

By now you should have received an “Established Stewardship Renewal Commitment Form” in the mail from the Cathedral. It was in the envelope with the Christmas Card. Last week I wrote about ‘Why’ we should become stewards of the Church. This week I want to write about ‘How Much’ our stewardship to the Church should be. Before I answer the question of ‘how much’ let’s review ‘why’ we become stewards. The most important reason we become Stewards of the Church is because we love God.

Our goal should be to bring at least 10% of everything we earn to the Church. In the Old Testament God established a number of ways for His People to thank Him for their blessings. In addition to making offerings to Him in His Temple, God established ‘The Tithe’ which means God’s People were expected to bring 10% of everything they received to the Temple. The Temple would use ‘The Tithe’ to continue the work of God in the World.

Some people think ‘The Tithe’ is not Christian because it was in the Old Testament. Some say that it is too legalistic. There were some during Christ’s time who weren’t living their faith, but they were giving ‘The Tithe’. To those Christ said, “For you pay tithe of mint, anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” (Matthew 23.23) Christ tells us we should give ‘The Tithe’ AND do good works. Being a Christian isn’t about doing one thing OR another.

For those who don’t agree with ‘The Tithe’ let’s look at the other amounts used in the New Testament for our giving. To the rich man who followed all the rules (so that meant he gave ‘The Tithe’ also) Jesus said, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19.21) When Zacchaeus committed to give away half of everything to the poor, Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.” (Luke 19.9)

The Holy Scriptures and Holy Tradition give to us three options when it comes to the question of ‘How Much’ our stewardship should be. We can choose 10%, 50% or 100%, but these are just numbers. Remember that stewardship is about our love for God, not following the rules. No matter ‘how much’ we give we can never forget the ‘Widow's Mite’. “As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.“Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.” (Luke 21.1-3)

The more God has given to us, the more we should give to Him.

«ΒΙΒΛΟΣ ΓΕΝΕΣΕΩΣ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ ….. », ξεκινάει το ευαγγέλιό του ο Ματθαίος. Μας περιγράφει την ιστορία του Ιησού Χριστού. Γένεση σημαίνει, καθώς εννοεί, ότι συμπεριλαμβάνει στα γραφόμενά του τα πάντα για τον Χριστό, όχι μόνο τη γέννησή του. Όλη την βιωτή του, τη διδασκαλία του, τα θαύματά του και φυσικά τον θάνατο και την ανάστασή Του.

«….. ΥΙΟΥ ΔΑΥΙΔ, ΥΙΟΥ ΑΒΡΑΑΜ»: Αυτός ο Ιησούς Χριστός έγινε άνθρωπος, εισήλθε στην ιστορία, και σαν άνθρωπος κατάγεται από τον Δαβίδ, που κι αυτός κατάγεται από τον Αβραάμ (ο γενάρχης των εβραίων, αφού ο Ματθαίος απευθύνεται σε ιουδαϊκό κοινό). Στις μεγάλες αυτές μορφές της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης είχε υποσχεθεί ο Θεός τον ερχομό του Θεανθρώπου από τη γενιά τους, που τώρα πραγματοποιείται, μας λέγει ο Ματθαίος. Αυτό το χαρμόσυνο γεγονός αποδεικνύει ο ευαγγελιστής με το γενεαλογικό δέντρο του Χριστού, που παραθέτει στη συνέχεια. Θέλει να πει ότι ο Χριστός δεν είναι άλλος από τον Μεσσία, που όλοι οι πιστοί διαχρονικά περίμεναν για να σώσει το ανθρώπινο γένος.

Ο γενεαλογικός πίνακας που παρατίθεται στη συνέχεια από το Ματθαίο (με κάθε τέτοιον προσωπικό πίνακα γενεαλογίας υποστήριζαν μπροστά στο νόμο και μεταξύ τους οι Ιουδαίοι ατομικές διεκδικήσεις και διαφορές) περιλαμβάνει 3 εβραϊκούς καταλόγους, που ο καθένας περιέχει 14 ονόματα (ο 3ος κατάλογος ξεκινά με την βαβυλώνια αιχμαλωσία). Ο αριθμός 14 είναι πολλαπλάσιο του ιερού αριθμού 7 και έχει την έννοια της αγιότητας της ιστορίας και του χρόνου. Υποδηλώνει επίσης ότι τίποτα δεν είναι τυχαίο από όσα έγιναν (και γίνονται), διότι εξελίσσονται σύμφωνα με το σχέδιο του Θεού, και ότι όλοι οι αιώνες ανέμεναν τον Χριστό. Έτσι, ανάμεσα στα 47 ονόματα προγόνων του Χριστού που παρατίθενται από τον Ματθαίο (και πάλι δεσπόζει η καθολικότητα του αριθμού 7) αναφέρονται σπουδαίοι άνδρες μεταξύ των Ισραηλιτών, οι οποίοι όμως έκαναν και σοβαρά λάθη και κακίες για τα οποία μετανόησαν. Η μετάνοια είναι όλο το νόημα της Αγίας Γραφής. Δεν σώζεται κανείς από τα δικά του ανδραγαθήματα, από την επίγεια δόξα, αλλά από το έλεος του Θεού. Και αυτό χορηγείται σε όσους ταπεινώνονται και ζητούν τη θεία βοήθεια και ευσπλαχνία.

Ένα τέτοιο παράδειγμα αποτελεί η ζωή του μεγαλύτερου βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, Δαβίδ (1033-993 π.Χ.), ο οποίος αν και είχε τόσα προσόντα (εξαίρετος ποιητής, μουσικός, κιθαρωδός,εφευρέτης μουσικών οργάνων, διοικητής, προφήτης) έπραξε στη ζωή του φόνο και μοιχεία. Ερωτεύτηκε μια παντρεμένη γυναίκα και έστειλε στην πρώτη γραμμή της μάχης τον σύζυγό της, τον Ουρία, για να πεθάνει και να του πάρει τη γυναίκα (με την οποία παντρεύτηκε), την Βηρσαβεέ. Αργότερα μετανόησε με τη βοήθεια του προφήτη Νάθαν και έκλαψε πικρά. Ο Δαβίδ προφητεύει στους Ψαλμούς τον Μεσσία αλλά και η ζωή του σε 3 σημεία μοιάζει με του Χριστού, αφού κι αυτός γεννήθηκε στην Βηθλεέμ, ήταν 30 ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς, και συγχωρούσε τους εχθρούς του, όπως ζήτησε από όλους να κάνουν μετέπειτα ο Ιησούς.

Παραπλήσιο παράδειγμα και η ζωή του γιου του Δαβίδ βασιλιά Σολομώντα (972-931 π.Χ.). Αυτός διακρινόταν για τη μεγάλη σύνεση, τη μόρφωσή του, τις 3.000 παραβολές και τις 5.000 ωδές που έγραψε. Για τη ζωή και το έργο του αντλούμε πληροφορίες από τον Εκκλησιαστή, το Άσμα Ασμάτων και τις Παροιμίες. Αν και του χάρισε ο Θεός σοφία, δόξα και πλούτη πολλά, κατάντησε σαρκολάτρης και έπεσε και στη λατρεία των ειδώλων χάρη των παλλακίδων του και για προαγωγή συμφερόντων. Θέλει οπωσδήποτε να μας υπενθυμίσει το κείμενο ότι ο Χριστός ενδιαφέρεται για τη σωτηρία όλων και όχι μόνο των «καθώς πρέπει». Και πως ήταν η άκρα ταπείνωση πάνω στη γη, αφού δέχθηκε να χάσει την θεϊκή του «αξιοπρέπεια» για να σώσει με τη θυσία Του, αν το θελήσουν, ακόμη και τους χειρότερους εγκληματίες. Και λέμε «αν το θελήσουν» ακριβώς γιατί ο Θεός σέβεται απόλυτα την ανθρώπινη ελευθερία, την προσωπική στροφή καθενός προς το καλό ή το κακό, προς την αγάπη ή την αποξένωση και την σκληρότητα.

Ο Αβραάμ, που ονομάστηκε «πατέρας της πίστεως» και «φίλος του Θεού», ζούσε στη γη των Χαλδαίων, στη Μεσοποταμία, και ήταν ο μόνος μονοθεϊστής ανάμεσα σε ειδωλολάτρες (ακόμη κι ο πατέρας του, ο Θάρα, υπήρξε ειδωλολάτρης). Επενέβη στη ζωή του ο Θεός λόγω του ευσεβούς χαρακτήρα του και του έδωσε εντολή να μεταβεί στη γη Χαναάν (Παλαιστίνη) για να ζήσει εκεί με την οικογένειά του. Στους αμέτρητους απογόνους του συμπεριλαμβάνονται, σύμφωνα με την υπόσχεση του Θεού, οι Ιουδαίοι, οι Χριστιανοί και οι Αγαρηνοί (από την υπηρέτριά του Άγαρ). Βέβαια, ο Χριστός δεν γεννήθηκε εβραίος γιατί δήθεν, όπως πιστεύανε στην εποχή του Κυρίου, το έθνος τους ήταν μοναδικό και εξαιρετικό πάνω στη γη (ούτε ο Αβραάμ εξάλλου ήταν εβραίος, ούτε οι προφήτες αναφέρθηκαν μόνο στο εβραϊκό μέλλον), αλλά γιατί μέσω αυτού έγινε γνωστό το μήνυμα σωτηρίας σε όλα τα έθνη, ήδη από τα χρόνια της Π.Δ. Όχι μόνο δηλαδή ανάμεσα στους προγόνους του Χριστού συναντάμε και πολύ ασεβείς άρχοντες των Ισραηλιτών, όπως ο Μανασσής και ο Αμών, αλλά και στον γενεαλογικό κατάλογο για τον οποίον μιλήσαμε προηγουμένως συμπεριλαμβάνονται και η Χαναναία Ραάβ καθώς και η Μωαβίτισσα Ρούθ, που σημαίνει ότι ο Θεός δεν κάνει διακρίσεις μεταξύ εθνών, φυλών κ.λπ., αλλά αποβλέπει στο έλεος και τη λύτρωση όλων.

Ένα σπουδαίο θεολογικό συμπέρασμα από τον γενεαλογικό κατάλογο του Ματθαίου είναι επίσης ότι ο Θεός δεν ξεχνά τις υποσχέσεις Του, αλλά ότι μόνο Εκείνος γνωρίζει τον κατάλληλο καιρό για να τις πραγματοποιήσει. Ταπείνωση λοιπόν, μεταστροφή και προσευχή είναι το τρίπτυχο της σωτηρίας. Επιπλέον, αν και κυβέρνησαν το λαό του Θεού στην 1η περίοδο Κριτές (από τον Αβραάμ έως τον Δαβίδ), στη 2η ιστορική του περίοδο Βασιλείς (από τον Δαβίδ έως την μετοικεσία στην Βαβυλώνα) και στην 3η αρχιερείς (από την βαβυλώνιο αιχμαλωσία μέχρι την εμφάνιση του Χριστού), εν τούτοις δεν κατάφεραν τόσο επιφανείς διοικητές να αλλάξουν το ποιόν των ανθρώπων και να τους στρέψουν προς τα βέλτιστα, αφού μόνο ο Χριστός ως σαρκωθείς Θεός μπορεί να αλλάξει οντολογικά τους θέλοντας και ευσεβώς ζώντες πιστούς. Άλλωστε μοναδικά ο Χριστός κατέχει τις ιδιότητες του προφήτη, του ιερέα και του πνευματικού βασιλιά, χαρίσματα που χορηγούνται και σε μας με το μυστήριο του Χρίσματος.Αμην.

Greetings in Christ,

Last Sunday our Choir put on a most beautiful Christmas concert. Caroling in the Cathedral was an incredible display of the hard work and effort that our Choir had put into making the concert an uplifting and memorable event. I am thankful that I could experience it for the first time! 

Our Dance Ministry brought their Christmas Bazaar to us during coffee hour on Sunday, where they sold a variety of items and delicious pastry! More than anything it was a blessing to see their smiling faces working for the betterment of their ministry.

On Wednesday the 7th we had our Monthly Parish Ministry Night. The theme for this December was St. Nicholas, and the discussions were fantastic in depth and substance as I would have expected from a community under his protection! We hope you will join us for our next one!

I want to thank everyone who participated in the Angel Tree Outreach Project, the children who will receive those gifts will benefit greatly from your generosity.

This Sunday please join us together as a whole community to celebrate the Christmas Season at 5pm in the St. Nicholas Community Center! 

Please remember to bring your Children to Sunday School after Divine Liturgy, and to collect them at 12pm as it ends. Our dedicated Sunday School teachers continue to put great effort into their lessons for the sake of your childrens’ spiritual growth and knowledge!

This coming Friday the 23rd is the last scheduled date for  the Sacrament of Confession in the St. Dionysios Chapel without appointment.

My Challenge for us this week is to consider how we will end the Nativity fast. We are nearing the end of the fast and the beginning of the Feast! At this time, there could be a lot of chaos, last minute gift shopping and other such holliday bustling. What can we do to keep our focus on the true meaning of Christ's Nativity? My Challenge for us is to find some time to read and learn the nativity hymns in the language you know best. Read them, listen to them, and chant them! They are fully packed with Theological wonder, that is nourishing, and fulfilling.

Sebastian the Martyr & his Companions

This Saint, who was from the city of Milan, was a member of the Senate as well as a zealot for the Faith of Christ, and had converted many to the knowledge of God. When Diocletian and Maximian began a Persecution against the Christians, Saint Sebastian was arrested and pierced with sharp arrows, and the bones of his body were shattered with clubs; and being cut into pieces, he gave up his spirit to God in the year 288. Together with him there were others also who died while enduring various tortures. Their names are Marcellinus and Mark the brethren, Tranquillinus their father, Nicostratus and his spouse Zoe, Tiburtius, Claudius, Castulus, and Castor.

Sunday before Nativity

On the Sunday that occurs on or immediately after the eighteenth of this month, we celebrate all those who from ages past have been well-pleasing to God, beginning from Adam even unto Joseph the Betrothed of the Most Holy Theotokos, according to genealogy, as the Evangelist Luke hath recorded historically (Luke 3:23-38); we also commemorate the Prophets and Prophetesses, and especially the Prophet Daniel and the Holy Three Children.

"Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me, Your servant, from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ.  Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete health.  For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen."

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 2nd Mode

When You descended unto death, O Life Immortal, You rendered to Hades a mortal blow by the lightning of Your divinity, and when from the depths of darkness You also raised the dead, all the heavenly powers cried out: O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory to You.

An example of the Faith and a life of humility. As a teacher of abstinence you did inspire and lead your flock and through the truthfulness of your deeds were exalted by greatness through your humility; uplifting all and by poverty gaining wealth. Father and Hierarch St. Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved.

While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. And He said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" and they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we had hoped that He was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ὁ Πέτρος ἀναστὰς ἔδραμεν ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ παρακύψας βλέπει τὰ ὀθόνια κείμενα μόνα, καὶ ἀπῆλθε, πρὸς ἑαυτὸν θαυμάζων τὸ γεγονός. The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:9-10; 32-40

BRETHREN, by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God.

And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram, and Aram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king.

And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel, and Salathiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

Through their prayers for, and alms on behalf of, the deceased, Christians display the relationship between this world and the world to come. The Church in this world and the Church in the other world are one and the same the one Body of Christ one the Church Militant and the other the Church Triumphant. It can be compared to a tree which has roots beneath the earth comprise as well as branches above the earth, but both the roots and the branches comprise one organism. This metaphor also illustrates how we on earth who comprise the Church Militant can receive help from the saints and the righteous ones in the Heavenly Church Triumphant. Saint Athanasios says: 'As it happens with wine inside a barrel which, when the vineyard blooms in the field, senses it and the wine itself blossoms together with it, so it is with the souls of sinners. They receive some relief from the Bloodless Sacrifice offered for them and from charity' performed for their repose. Saint Ephrem the Syrian cites that same example with wine and the vineyard and concludes: 'And so, when there exists such mutual sensitivity even among plants, is not the prayer and sacrifice felt even more for the departed ones?' '[At the Eucharist] the bread itself and the wine are changed into God's body and blood. But if you enquire how this happens, it is enough for you to learn that it was through the Holy Spirit, just as the Lord took on Himself flesh that subsisted in Him and was born of the Holy Mother of God through the Spirit. And we know nothing further save that the Word of God is true and energises and is omnipotent, but the manner of this cannot be searched out. But one can put it well thus, that just as in nature the bread by the eating and the wine by the drinking are changed into the body and blood of the eater and drinker, and do not become a different body from the former one, so the bread of the table and the wine and water are supernaturally changed by the invocation and presence of the Holy Spirit into the body and blood of Christ, and are not two but one and the same.'

Important Updates From Our Ministries

St Nicholas Kitchen

Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral that provides hot meals, helping hands and meaningful relationships to the impoverished in our community. The heart for this ministry is illustrated in the book of Matthew 25:35-36:

 “….For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me….”

St. Nicholas Kitchen will continue preparing the Monday meals from 7:30 – 11:00 am. The meals will be delivered Monday's to the new Hope Center at the Sheppard center where the meals will be given to those in need by their, and our volunteers. We still need volunteers, food and monetary donations. Meals will be served from 11:00 – 12:00 pm. For further information, please call Chris Palaidis at (727) 808-3895.
