Everyone is Welcomed God
We live in a world consumed by prejudice. Our children are sometimes treated as outsiders by other students in school. Our friends are sometimes viewed as strangers at work by their coworkers. Our family sometimes feels unwelcome in the very neighborhoods in which we have lived for years. Feeling unwelcomed can be a crippling reality that forces many families to remain isolated and separate from even the closest human being. Eventually, the constant feeling of not being welcomed by others can fool us into believing that even God won’t welcome us in His Church. But still we come because in our heart we know that God can help us, if only He could see past our faults.
I imagine these were the exact emotions shared by ten men who approached Jesus Christ to be healed. In the story of the Ten Lepers, we witness the effect of God’s never-ending love on the lives of ten outcasts of society. Ten men who were not welcomed by their fellow town-folk came to God, begging for mercy, and they were each healed by Jesus Christ. Ten men who were courageous enough to “tune out” the words of others and approach God were given a new chance at life.
It didn’t matter that these ten men were shunned by other “more respectable” members of the city. It didn’t matter that these men were foreigners rather than local insiders. Each was healed by God. But we learn one additional and more important lesson from this story. It was the ONE man who returned to worship God that was “made well” and honored by Jesus. And he was a foreigner!
Now consider the story from the point of view of the crowd. We are the crowd. Unfortunately, there are times that we treat others like they do not belong. Maybe their family came from the wrong island. Maybe their ancestors were from the wrong country. Maybe they have the wrong career. Maybe they said something mean to us years ago.
There are many ‘maybes’ but only one result. Every time we treat others like they do not belong, no matter why, we push them away from God’s blessings. It was the one single foreigner who had the courage to return to God to say ‘thank you’ for the miracle. He found a way to ignore the others who had not welcomed him. He found a way to be blessed by God. We can find a way to be blessed by God. Everyone can find a way to be blessed by God.
Στην εβδομάδα που θα διανύσουμε δυο μεγάλες εορτές έρχονται να μας ευλογήσουν, αυτή του Αγίου Αθανασίου όπου εορτάζει ο προϊστάμενος μας π.Αθανάσιος και η εορτή του Αγίου Αντώνιου του μεγάλου ασκητού της ερήμου . Καθώς λοιπόν διακόνησα επι δυο έτη ως δόκιμος μοναχός στην Μόνη του Αγίου Αντώνιου Αριζονας λαμβάνοντας καθημερινά μεγάλες ευλογίες αλλά και πνευματικά μαθήματα -γυμνάσματα από τον μακαριστό Γέροντα Εφραίμ θα ήθελα να αναφέρω συγκεκριμένα έναν από τους λόγους του προς ωφέλεια όλων μας. Είπε ο Γέροντας :Ο βίος κάθε ανθρώπου είναι μία θάλασσα, και αυτή η θάλασσα πότε έχει γαλήνη, πότε αρχίζει να έχει λίγη τρικυμία, πότε δυναμώνει κι αποκτά μποφόρ και πότε πότε γίνεται άκρως απειλητική στο να καταποντιστούν όχι μόνο βάρκες και καίκια, αλλά και υπερωκεάνια. Κάθε άνθρωπος που ζει σ’ αυτή τη ζωή πλέει στη θάλασσα του βίου. Κι επομένως, εφόσον πλέει στη θάλασσα, είναι πάρα πολύ φυσικό και επόμενο να συναντήσει όλες αυτές τις αλλοιώσεις, που η μία διαδέχεται την άλλη σε όλη τη ζωή του ανθρώπου.Κάθε καπετάνιος που η εργασία του είναι να κάνει ταξίδια, να πλέει στη θάλασσα, προσπαθεί, όσο το δυνατόν, το καράβι, το εργαλείο του εμπορίου του, να το κάνει στέρεο και ανάλογο σε αντοχή με τις φουρτούνες που προβλέπει η πείρα του. Και όπως τα σημερινά αεροπλάνα τα κατασκευάζουν κατά τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε να αντέχουν σε κάθε καιρό για να είναι, κατά κάποιο τρόπο, απρόσβλητα στις αλλοιώσεις που θα δέχονται στη διαδρομή τους και στην πορεία τους, έτσι και τα καράβια.
Αυτό θέλει να πεί, ότι και εμείς που θες είμαστε καπετάνιοι, θες ότι είμαστε καράβια οι ίδιοι, οφείλουμε να προβλέπουμε αυτές τις τρικυμίες της ζωής οι οποίες είναι ολοφάνερες και από προσωπική εμπειρία και από ο,τι βλέπουμε στην ανθρώπινη ζωή, τα πόσα κάθε άνθρωπος περνάει. Οικογενειακά βάρη, στενοχώριες, πειρασμούς, θλίψεις από ασθένειες, από οικονομικά, από τα παιδιά, από τόσα και τόσα, τα οποία βέβαια δεν μπορούμε να τα αριθμήσουμε. Όλα αυτά δημιουργούν τις διάφορες τρικυμίες, τις διάφορες αλλοιώσεις και στη θάλασσα και στον αέρα. Και επομένως, οφείλουμε, κατά χρέος, κατά κανόνα και κατ’ ανάγκην να βρεθούμε απέναντι όλων αυτών των αλλοιώσεων, των τρικυμιών, να βρεθούμε σε κατάσταση αντοχής, ώστε να μην υποστούμε ναυάγιο, πτώση, καταστροφή. Γι’ αυτό ακριβώς, αυτό που πρέπει να κατασκευάσουμε είναι ο εαυτός μας. Να είμαστε κοντά στον μεγάλο καπετάνιο, ο οποίος είναι ο Χριστός, που μας δίνει τις σωστές κατευθύνσεις και τον οποίο πρέπει να έχουμε στο τιμόνι μας σαν οδηγό, σαν καπετάνιο, σαν πυξίδα. Πρέπει ολ’ αυτά να τα λάβουμε υπόψιν ώστε, διερχόμενοι τη θάλασσα και πλέοντες στον αέρα, να βρεθούμε έτσι ανθεκτικοί να τα αντιμετωπίσουμε.
Οι θλίψεις είναι οι διάφορες τρικυμίες, και στις τρικυμίες πρέπει να βρεθούμε ανθεκτικοί. Τι θέλει να πεί αυτό; Ότι πρέπει να προετοιμάζουμε τον εαυτό μας εκ πείρας και από πρόβλεψη, όπως προβλέπουν και οι καπεταναίοι από τα διάφορα σημεία το τι μέλλει να γίνει στη θάλασσα και παίρνουν τα ανάλογα μέτρα. Έτσι και εμείς οι ίδιοι θα παίρνουμε τα ανάλογα μετρα αντιμετωπίσεως στο να υπομείνουμε τις θλίψεις και τους πειρασμούς. Με τι; Με το πνεύμα της υπομονής, της καρτερίας, της μακροθυμίας, και μάλιστα με την παραμονή μας στον Νόμο του Θεού, στον Νόμο του Ευαγγελίου, στις διατάξεις της Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας μας, ώστε να είμαστε απρόσβλητοι τόσο από τις κατά κόσμον θλίψεις όσο και από τις τρικυμίες, οι οποίες δημιουργούνται από διάφορες επιβουλές του Σατανά, που έχουν σκοπό να μας υποσκελίσουν και να μας κάνουν να ξεφύγουμε από την Εκκλησία. Και έτσι να διακινδυνέψουμε να πέσουμε σε αίρεση και σ’ οτιδήποτε άλλο μπορεί να μας βγάλει από την Εκκλησία, διότι μόνο διά της Εκκλησίας γίνεται η σωτηρία κάθε χριστιανού.Αμην
Saint Paul, first among hermits, was born about 227 in the Thebaid of Egypt. In 250 he fled into the wilderness because of the persecution raging at that time under Decius. Having lived a solitary life in a certain cave for ninety-one years, he reposed in 341, at the age of 114, and was buried by Anthony the Great, who had been directed thither by God several days before the Saint's repose.
Saint John, who was from Constantinople, was the son of illustrious parents -- Eutropius the Senator and Theodora. At twelve years of age he departed secretly from his home and went to the Monastery of the Unsleeping (see Dec. 29). Aflame with longing for his parents, he returned after six years to his father's home in the guise of a pauper and beggar. Living in a small hut at the gates of his parents' house (wherefrom he is called "hut-dweller"), he remained unknown therein for many years, and suffered mockery at the hands of those who had been his own servants. Foreknowing his death, he revealed himself to his parents, and within a few moments reposed, about the year 450.

If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Brethren, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all.

Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral that provides hot meals, helping hands and meaningful relationships to the impoverished in our community. The heart for this ministry is illustrated in the book of Matthew 25:35-36:
“….For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me….”
St. Nicholas Kitchen will continue preparing the Monday meals from 7:30 – 11:00 am. The meals will be delivered Monday's to the new Hope Center at the Sheppard center where the meals will be given to those in need by their, and our volunteers. We still need volunteers, food and monetary donations. Meals will be served from 11:00 – 12:00 pm. For further information, please call Chris Palaidis at (727) 808-3895.
