What is Your Plan for Salvation?

In just two weeks we will again begin a spiritual journey as Orthodox Christians. Our annual journey toward Pascha will begin February 5th and come to a grand conclusion on Sunday, April 16th when we will celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. But long before we can celebrate we have some preparations to focus on. Long before we can see the Lord on Pascha we need to get ourselves ready today. If we want to see the Lord, we need to plan ahead.

With Christmas and Epiphany in our rearview mirror, today the Church gives us a glimpse of what is to come. Today the Church draws our attention to a short man who “sought to see who Jesus was.” (Luke 19.3) We know him as Zacchaeus, a rich tax collector who climbed a tree to see Jesus because he was short. This Gospel is read each year two weeks before the Triodion begins. When you hear about Zacchaeus, you know the Triodion and Great Lent is just around the corner. But it is never just a story. The Church invites us to learn from Zacchaeus for our journey that is about to begin. What are we asked to learn?

Zacchaeus was a sinner and was lost.

Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus.

Zacchaeus planned in advance to see Jesus.

Zacchaeus put his plan into action to see Jesus.

Zacchaeus saw Jesus.

Zacchaeus heard Jesus call out to him.

Zacchaeus welcomed Jesus into his home.

Zacchaeus gave half of his wealth to the poor.

Zacchaeus repaid all the people he stole money from, by four times.

Jesus came to save the lost.

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house.”

The crowd didn’t want Jesus to visit Zacchaeus.

With the Triodion only two weeks away and Great Lent, I invite you to replace the name “Zacchaeus” with your name. Then go back and read the story and ask yourself...

What is my plan to be saved by God?

How will I put my plan into action?

How will I welcome God into my heart and home?

How will I repent for my sins?

How will I respond when the crowd doesn’t want me to see Jesus?

Remember....

The Church is the Body of Christ.

The Church is here to help you answer these questions.

Trust the Church.

Today's Epistle passage comes from the Apostle Paul's 1st Epistle to Timothy. Timothy was one of the Apostle's most devoted disciples and trusted colleagues. Paul himself, furthermore, made Timothy Bishop of Ephesus. Timothy finished his life with a martyr's death.

At the beginning of our passage, Paul writes to him about the reliability of the word that deserves to be fully accepted. But which word is this? This phrase is connected to the preceding verse of the passage and refers to the usefulness of piety, that is, of faith and the evangelical ethos, both in the present, as also in the future life. That is why, Paul continues, we toil and are mocked, because we put our hope in the living God, who is the savior of all people, and, indeed, of those who believe. The believer's attachment to piety, to the new way of life, and to hope in the truth of God, give other dimensions and inspiration to his life.

The Apostle emphasizes the greatest gift of God, which concerns the will of God for the salvation of all people.

Salvation is the work of God wrought "in the midst of the

earth"(Psalm 73:12), through His Cross and Resurrection, and in this sense, He is "savior of all people".Nevertheless, salvation is not achieved without man's cooperation. That is why those who will wish and strive to be saved, are saved by their response to the call addressed to them by God. These are the "believers" who consciously participate in the life and death of Jesus Christ and are nourished unto eternal life with the bread of life. This is what Paul asks his disciple to order and teach. In fact, because when Paul wrote his letter around 65 AD, Timothy was quite young, about 35 years old; he advises that no one should scorn him because of his youth.

"Become an example to the believers"

Therefore, Timothy must, according to his teacher's exhortation, become an "example to the believers", that is, "an archetype of life and image",as Saint Chrysostom interprets.Of course, this does not only refer simply to the example of a moral and correct conduct, but mainly to the manifestation of the presence of Christ through human existence. That is why Paul points out the guidelines that will make him an example of a Christian life, distinguished:"In the word" means the teaching to believers and the Christian witness to those outside the Church. It also means the attention we should have when discussing with others. A good word for a fellow human being, even if he does not deserve it, acts therapeutically for his existence, with the offering of God's love. On the contrary, the insulting speech seriously injures him.

"In conduct"refers to the struggle against egotism, which destroys proper communication with fellow human beings. With the power of Christ's humility and love, you accept the other's presence as a bearer of the image of God. "In love - in the spirit; the person in the model of Jesus Christ embraces the love of God and becomes spiritual, because his existence is enlivened by the presence of the Holy Spirit .Amen

The Righteous Martyr Anastasius of Persia

Saint Anastasius was a Persian by race, the son of a Magus, and a soldier in the Persian army in the days of Chosroes II, King of Persia, and Heraclius, Emperor of New Rome. The Saint's Persian name was Magundat.

When Chosroes captured Jerusalem in the year 614 and took the Precious Cross away captive, Magundat heard the report of the miracles that came to pass through the Cross of our salvation. Being of a prudent mind, perplexed that an instrument of torture should be so highly honored by the Christians, yet seized with longing to learn their Faith, he diligently sought out instruction in the whole divine dispensation of Christ: His Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection. When he learned what he sought to know, his soul was filled with wonder and joy. Withdrawing to the Holy City, he was baptized by Saint Modestus, Patriarch of Jerusalem, and became a monk, receiving the new name of Anastasius.

As he read the lives of the Saints and the accounts of the holy Martyrs, his heart was kindled with love for them to such a degree that he prayed to be counted worthy of a martyr's end like unto theirs. Finally, unable to contain his longing, he left his monastery. Encountering certain Persian Magi at Caesarea, he rebuked them for their delusion. Since Palestine was still held in the captivity of the Persians, he was taken before the Persian ruler, questioned, beaten, and imprisoned. He was then taken with other captives to Persia, where, after many tortures, refusing to espouse again the error of his fathers, he was hanged up by one hand, strangled with a noose, and beheaded. The translation of his holy relics is celebrated on the 24th of this month.

Timothy the Apostle of the 70

The Apostle Timothy, who was from Lystra of Lycaonia, was born of a Greek (that is, pagan) father and a Jewish mother. His mother's name was Eunice, and his grandmother's name was Lois (II Tim. 1:5). He became the disciple of the Apostle Paul when the latter first preached there, and he followed St. Paul during the whole period of the Apostle's preaching. Afterwards, Timothy was consecrated by him as first Bishop of the church in Ephesus. Under the supervision of John the Evangelist, who governed all the churches in Asia, he completed his life as a martyr in the year 97. He was stoned to death by the heathens, because, as some surmise, he opposed the festival held in honor of Artemis (Diana). The Apostle Paul's First and Second Epistles to Timothy were written to him.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

By Your cross, O Lord, You shattered death; to the thief You opened paradise. You transformed the Myrrhbearers' lamentation, and commanded Your Apostles to proclaim that You arose, Christ our God, granting to the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion for Timothy of the 70 in the 4th Mode

Since thou hadst been instructed in uprightness thoroughly and wast vigilant in all things, thou wast clothed with a good conscience as befitteth one holy. Thou didst draw from the Chosen Vessel ineffable mysteries; and having kept the Faith, thou didst finish a like course, O Hieromartyr and Apostle Timothy. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Apolytikion for Martyr Anastasius the Persian in the 4th Mode

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 1st Mode

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Tenth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:1-14

At that time, Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and He revealed Himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was raised from the dead. .

Tenth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

15th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to Timothy 4:9-15

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and suffer reproach, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress.

15th Sunday of Luke

Gospel Reading

15th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 19:1-10

At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

15th Sunday of Luke

Wisdom of the Fathers

For Christ's presence is like that of some life-giving, scented balsam which restores health, enriches life and gives savor to the soul, the thoughts, the words of a man. In brief, distance from Christ means corruption and death, and closeness to Him means salvation and life.
Bishop Nikolai Velimirovic
Prolog, 4 February

Christ is the salvation that comes, and Zacchaeus is the house to which He comes.
