The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53

At that time, Jesus, having risen from the dead, stood in the midst of his disciples and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them.

Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high."

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 4:22-27.

Brethren, Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married."

The Reading is from Luke 13:10-17

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

Parish Council Elections: Elections for members of the Parish Council 2019-2021 will be held today, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00pm in the Conference room adjacent to the parish office. The candidates are:  John Psomas, Evans Agrapidis, Angela Phillips, Georgette Betts-Tsakalos and Dean Mellas. Stewards in good canonical & financial standing with the Church are eligible to vote. The board of election members are Ted Vittas, Alice Eliades and Charlie Charllis.

Are we Fasting Before & For Christmas? Yes...Fasting is an essential part of our spiritual preparation and edification. Yet, there are many different (and sometimes conflicting messages) regarding fasting. Please bear this in mind: From November 15th through December 24th Orthodox Christians observe a 40 day period of abstinence from animal & dairy products and olive oil. The ascetic discipline prepares us for a major feast- the Lord’s birth-Christmas. By controlling ourselves in what we eat, what we say, what we give to others (charity, stewardship, etc.) we prepare ourselves to receive the Lord. Without the discipline of the fast, the joyful experience of the feast is minimized. Fasting is never a punishment. Note that fish is permitted except for Wednesdays and Fridays through December 11th. From December 12th through Christmas Eve the fast is stricter every day- fruits, nuts, vegetables, shell fish allowed but no animal or dairy products of course until Christmas Day. Do the best you can and remember that fasting/abstaining from sin is the greatest fast.

Sessions on Scripture (SOS): SOS willmeet on Wednesday, December 12th in the conference room at 2:00pm and at 7:30pm for a discussion of the First book of Thessalonians chapters 1-4. No prior knowledge of Scripture is required.

Parents don’t forget your cameras!  On Sunday, December 23rd we will have our Christmas Pageant in church after worship services and our pageant practice will be today after Divine Liturgy.

 

Saint Nicholas Ladies Philoptochos:  To all the parishioners who participated in our annual Christmas card - thank you so much! Your lovely card will arrive shortly. We wish everyone a joyous Christmas and may your homes and hearts be filled with the spirit of Christ our Lord and may your New Year be blessed with health and love. 

 

Daughters of Penelope: The AGAPE Chapter is holding its annual Vasilopita Sale!  Pre-paid orders will be accepted until Thursday, December 20th (look for the flyer/order form set out during Fellowship Hour). The Vasilopites will be distributed on Thursday, December 27th (4:00pm – 7:30pm) in the AHEPA Room.

 

AHEPA Ramapo Chapter: On December 16th, the Ahepa Ramapo Chapter 453 will present a donation check to Mr. George Karatzia, the National Chairman, Dogs for Warrior Project. This is a joint AHEPA regional commitment to help our veterans who suffer from PTSD.

 

Matching Gift Program: Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions or volunteer hours made by their employees. Corporate matching gifts are a great way for Saint Nicholas stewards to maximize personal contributions to our church and increase the impact of their gift. Check with your employer to see if they will match a donation to our Saint Nicholas. 

 

Feast Day of St. Spyridon: Spyridon, the God-bearing Father of the Church, the great defender of Corfu and the boast of all the Orthodox, had Cyprus as his homeland. He was simple in manner and humble of heart, and was a shepherd of sheep. He was married and had a daughter Irene.  After his wife’s death he was appointed Bishop of Trimythus. After his death in 350 his relics were honored by all people of Faith. These relics were safeguarded by various priests throughout the ages and were placed in Corfu in 1460 where they remain to this day. They continue to be a staff for the faithful in Orthodoxy, and a supernatural wonder for those that behold this venerable saint; for even after the passage of 1,500 years, they have remained incorrupt, and even the flexibility of his flesh has been preserved. Truly wondrous is God in His Saints. This Wednesday, December 12th we will celebrate the Feast of Saint Spyridon with Orthros at 9:00am & Divine Liturgy at 10a.m. Chronia Polla (Many Years) to all!

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Conception of the Theotokos in the Fourth Mode

Today the bonds of childlessness are loosed; for God hearkened to Joachim and Anna. And though it was beyond hope, He clearly promised them that they should bear a divine child, from whom was born the Uncircumscribable One Himself Who became a mortal, and through an Angel commanded them to cry unto her: Rejoice, thou who art full of grace; the Lord is with thee.
