Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 67.35,26.
God is wonderful among his saints.
Verse: Bless God in the congregations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19.

Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Nativity
The Reading is from Matthew 2:13-23

When the wise men departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son."

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more." But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaos reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

Religious Education: No classes today.

January 1st, Saint Basil the Great: One of the three Cappadocian Fathers, Basil was the brother of Saint Gregory of Nyssa (10 January) and the close friend of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus (25 January). Educated in the best pagan and Christian culture of the day, he turned at the age of twenty-seven to the monastic life, and in 370 was consecrated archbishop of Caesarea. Upholding the full divinity of the Son and the Holy Spirit, during a period of intense controversy he played a decisive role in clarifying Christian faith in the Trinity.  Much of his energy was devoted to reorganizing monasticism in Asia Minor. He preferred life in community to the hermit way, because of the greater opportunities that it offers for mutual love and obedience. ‘Whose feet will you wash,’ he asked, or ‘whom will you serve, how can you be last of all, if you are alone?’ Around his episcopal residence in Caesarea he formed a vast complex of charitable institutions, hospital, orphanages and hostels for the poor, since he regarded active, loving compassion as man’s highest vocation: ‘Who does not know that man is a tame and sociable animal, not solitary and wild? For nothing is as characteristic of our nature as to communicate with one another, and to need one another, and to love our own kind.’

Office Closed: Parish office is closed this Tuesday, January 1st in observance of the Circumcision of the Lord and Saint Basil day.

Why do we have our Homes/ Businesses Blessed after Theophany?

We celebrate theophany on January 6th each year. Theophanymeans the appearance or manifestation of God. At Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River, according to the gospels of Mark & John, Jesus was there, the voice of the Father was heard and something in the form of a dove alighted on Jesus’ head. The Holy Trinity- (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) was present.  As Orthodox Christians, it is imperative that God is in our homes ALL year round. By inviting our pastor to bless our homes and businesses we are inviting Christ Himself to be in our midst as our pastor prays with us.  Saint John Chrysostom asserted that the first church is the home.   The active presence of Jesus Christ   creates a nurturing, loving home. A church home is the foundation of who we are and in Whom we believe. Thus Holy water blessings (Agiasmos) bring Christ into our homes and businesses.

Parish 50th Anniversary Celebration: November 3, 2019: We are planning the 50th Anniversary Celebration of our parish. To help, please join the event committee. See Fr. Bill, Nick Pirsos or any parish council member to offer your time, talent and treasure.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE NUMBERS: Stewardship is our personal offering of time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is not dues. Stewardship is based on Holy Scripture. Since time and talent offerings are more difficult to measure, one measurement of our response to God is our average “treasure” pledge per steward household. In 2017, we had 400 steward households that donated a total of $325,429.
To date in 2018, we have 239 households that have pledged $236,927 plus 132 unpledged donors that combined have donated $295,308 thus far. Please pledge for 2019 by completing a 2019 stewardship card.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

Angelic powers were above Thy tomb, and they that guarded Thee became as dead. And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. Thou hast despoiled Hades and wast not tried thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst grant us life. O Thou Who didst arise from the dead, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Nativity in the Fourth Mode

Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, hath shined the light of knowledge upon the world; for thereby they that worshipped the stars were instructed by a star to worship Thee, the Sun of Righteousness, and to know Thee, the Dayspring from on high. O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Sun. after Nativity in the Second Mode

O Joseph, proclaim the wonders to David, the ancestor of God. Thou hast seen a Virgin great with child; thou hast given glory with the shepherds; thou hast worshipped with the Magi; and thou hast been instructed through an Angel. Entreat Christ God to save our souls.

SAINT NICHOLAS ARCHBISHOP OF MYRA IN LYCIA in the First Mode

The truth of things has revealed you to your flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, you have achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty.  O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Mode

On this day the Virgin beareth the Transcendent in essence; * to the Unapproachable, * the earth doth offer a small cave; * Angels join in choir with shepherds * in giving glory; * with a star the Magi travel upon their journey; * for our sakes is born a young Child, * He that existed * before the ages as God.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Nathanael too enters ... saying, "Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?" ... Nevertheless, He is not ashamed to be named even from thence, signifying that He needs not ought of the things of men; and His disciples also He chooses out of Galilee.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 9 on Matthew 2, 4th Century

At His birth [He] is laid in a manger, and abides in an inn, and takes a mother of low estate; teaching us to think no such thing a disgrace, and from the first outset trampling under foot the haughtiness of man, and bidding us give ourselves up to virtue only. For why do you pride yourself on your country, when I am commanding thee to be a stranger to the whole world?
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 9 on Matthew 2, 4th Century
