Prokeimenon. 4th Tone. Daniel 3.26,27.
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40.

Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Ἀδελφοί, πίστει Μωϋσῆς μέγας γενόμενος ἠρνήσατο λέγεσθαι υἱὸς θυγατρὸς Φαραώ, μᾶλλον ἑλόμενος συγκακουχεῖσθαι τῷ λαῷ τοῦ θεοῦ ἢ πρόσκαιρον ἔχειν ἁμαρτίας ἀπόλαυσιν· μείζονα πλοῦτον ἡγησάμενος τῶν Αἰγύπτου θησαυρῶν τὸν ὀνειδισμὸν τοῦ Χριστοῦ· ἀπέβλεπεν γὰρ εἰς τὴν μισθαποδοσίαν. At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 8th Tone

From on high you descended, O merciful Lord. You accepted the cross and three days in the tomb to free us from the bondage of sin, O our life and resurrection. Glory to you, O Lord.

Before your most pure image we bow down, O Good One, entreating you to forgive our sins, Christ our God, for you willingly ascended the cross in the flesh to deliver from the enemy those whom you had made. For this we thank you and we cry to you, O Savior: By coming to save the world you have filled all things with joy.

O Holy Hierarch and Father Nicholas, your flock has recognized you by the brilliance of your works. You are a model of kindness, a rule of faith and a teacher of self-control. Your lowliness has raised you to the heights of fame, and your poverty has filled you with riches. Intercede to Christ our God to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 8th Tone

Victorious Lady, mighty champion, defending us, we, your servants, now inscribe to you this hymn of thanks, for you rescued us from suff'ring and tribulation. Theotokos, with your power that can never fail, keep us safe from ev'ry danger our whole life long, that we may cry to you: Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.

Sunday of Orthodoxy

For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus's death, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11), together with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14), established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: "If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema." Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast, she asked God's forgiveness for her husband. After this, on the first Sunday of the Fast, she and her son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.

James the Confessor

This Saint took up the monastic life from his youth in the Monastery of Studium, where he became a disciple of Saint Theodore the Studite. Later he became bishop and suffered many afflictions and torments at the hands of the Iconoclasts. Saint Theodore composed a homily in honour of this Saint James (PG 99, 1353-1356).

Wisdom of the Fathers

Moses... was himself saved by means of wood and water before the Law was given, when he was exposed to the Nile's currents, hidden away in an Ark (Exod. 2:3-10). And by means of wood and water he saved the people of Israel, revealing the Cross by the wood, Holy Baptism by water (Exod. 14:15-31). Paul, who had looked upon the mysteries, says openly, 'They were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud' (I Cor. 10:2). He also bears witness that, even before the events concerning the sea and his staff, Moses willingly endured Christ's Cross, 'Esteeming', he says, 'the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt' (Heb. 11:26). For the Cross is the reproach of Christ from the standpoint of foolish men. As Paul himself says of Christ, 'He endured the cross, despising the shame' (Heb. 12:2).

The Lenten book study will begin on March 25th. Diaper Drive for Lent
There is a great need in Waco for diapers.  Our service project for Lent will be to collect baby and adult diapers of all sizes.  Please bring your donations and put them in the box in the Parish Hall.  These will be donated to Caritas to distribute to needy families in our area.  Thank you for your generosity!

Lenten Services
The full schedule of Lenten services is on the Parish calender section of our new and improved website (www.stnicholaswaco.org).  No signup is needed for these services as attendance is fewer than on Sunday.  Father Daniel will hear confessions after any Lenten service.

Divine Liturgy Attendance
To reserve a spot for the weekly Divine Liturgy, you will now need to sign up.  Each Thursday, the list for attendance will be emailed to those on our email list.  To reserve your spot, use the SignUp Genius app or follow the link in the email sent to www.signupgenius.com. Please refrain from signing up each week in order to give everyone a chance to attend.  As always, Eucharist will be offered to those who did not get on the list.

Eucharist for Those Not Currently Attending Services
For those who are uncomfortable attending the Liturgy in person during the pandemic or who did not secure a spot on the attendance list for the week, Father Daniel will be offering the Eucharist at 11:30am each Sunday at the front door.

City-wide Mask Order
The City of Waco has mandated that masks be worn in all businesses and public spaces.  It is imperative that all precautions be taken while we are experiencing this increase in COVID cases in our community, so we kindly ask that you wear a mask to church. 

COVID-19 Update
Please be sure and watch your email for updates regarding how our Parish will handle the ongoing pandemic, particularly as cases are on the rise once again.  As always, if you have any coronavirus-like symptoms or have a known exposure, please worship from home for the CDC recommended time.  Please report any positive test results to the Parish office if you have attended services, so that others can go get tested and self-isolate.  Thank you for your care and concern in this matter.

Stewardship
Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. Stewardship is not just a program or a method of fundraising.  It is a way of thanking God for all the blessings He has given us by returning to Him a portion of time, talent and treasure each of us has received.

The Cornavirus has greatly impacted our Parish, and our budget is down by a significant amount.  Your giving is more important than ever. Please pick up your stewardship cards for 2021 and return as soon as possible to the church office or to Johnny Giotes.

We now have a donation button on our website for those of you who cannot attend services but would still like to give in support of our Parish.  Visit our website (www.stnicholaswaco.org) and click the "Donate" link on our homepage.  You will be taken to Paypal where you can pay your stewardship or other offerings.  

Agape Meal
Because of the pandemic, our monthly meals have been put on hold.  We deeply regret that this is necessary, but we do look forward to resuming this time of fellowship as soon as it safe.

Cleaning-Prosforo-Refreshments
Please sign up for the above duties on the wall calendar by the office door in the Parish Hall. The church needs all of you. Thank you for your faithfulness. Please keep it up. God will bless you.

Sacrament of Holy Communion (Non-Orthodox Visitors)
It is with the deepest regret that we ask you to abstain from receiving Holy Communion. This is a sacrament reserved only for those who are baptized, chrismated and prepared Orthodox Christians. It pains us to turn away a Christian who loves and worships the Lord Jesus, but because of the separation of the Christian churches and the different understanding we have about the Sacrament of Holy Communion, we ask you to abstain. Do come and receive the blessed bread at the conclusion of the service.

We are happy to have you worshiping with us today. Please stay and join us for coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy so that we may meet you.
