Wisdom of the Fathers

There is an old saying: 'Excesses meet.' Too much fasting and too much eating come to the same end. Keeping too long a vigil brings the same disastrous cost as ... sluggishness... Too much self-denial brings weakness and induces the same condition as carelessness. Often I have seen men who would not be snared by gluttony fall, nevertheless, through immoderate fasting and tumble in weakness into the very urge which they had overcome. Unmeasured vigils and foolish denial of rest overcame those whom sleep could not overcome. Therefore, 'fortified to right and to left in the armor of justice,' as the apostle says (2 Cor. 6:7), life must be lived with due measure and, with discernment for a guide, the road must be traveled between the two kinds of excess so that in the end we may not allow ourselves to be diverted from the pathway of restraint which has been laid down for us nor fall through dangerous carelessness into the urgings of gluttony and self-indulgence.

16th Sunday of Matthew

In Biblical times, a “talent” was a measure of currency, and one talent was a large sum of money. In this parable, the “talent” is a metaphor for God’s gifts to us. A common way to think about them is to think about our time, talents, and treasures. They are all gifts we receive from God so that we can flourish and help others. With our gifts, we can honor and glorify God both in ministry and in our personal callings, professions, and relationships. We can serve God and others with the tools He has given us. Our treasures, or the money with which God has blessed us, are one of those tools. The Lord spoke often about our money and possessions to teach us how to live as His stewards. Throughout the Gospels, we continually find the message of stewardship or giving back and honoring God with everything that we are and everything that we have. Many beloved Gospel teachings, while not directly addressing wealth, clearly refer to our giving thanks and, in this sense, stewardship as an act of worship. There is a vital link between our wealth and possessions, and the health of our souls. Jesus’ message is consistent and clear. How we handle our many blessings from Him, such as money, indicates what we view as important. Where we invest our treasures on Earth speaks volumes about where our hearts are. When our hearts are open to God, we use our time, talents, and treasures to serve Him, His Church, and others to glorify Him in all that we do. As Saint Paul says, God gives us all things for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, until we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God. When we commit our hearts to Him, our treasures, time, and talents flow freely within His Body, the Church. When we experience the love and mercy of God in our lives, we realize that giving is no longer an obligation, but giving in His name truly becomes a privilege. Jesus commands us to give in proportion to what was already given. We are asked to give all we can. The Lord is always with us, and yet He promises that He will come back again on the Last Day to restore all things and to establish His eternal Kingdom. He gives gifts to the Church in the Holy Spirit for mutual edification and promises to reward us when He comes again for having employed such gifts for our healing. Everything we have is a gift from God. The whole creation is a gift from God to us. By His divine power, the Lord has given us everything we need for life and godliness. We are given the responsibility, like the servants who invested their talents, to step out in faith and trust God in order to impact the world positively with all our gifts from Him. Much more so, God gives us His “talents” so that we might receive and give back to others in the ways appropriate to each of us. God grants all things to us, so that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to His glory. He supplies and multiplies our talents so others can be provided for, helped, and encouraged. This also multiplies thanksgiving to God. Saint John Chrysostom says, “the Masters tells them, well done, good and faithful servant. For it is good to see the neighbor’s benefit. You have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter the joy of your master. He means by this expression, enter into the realm of all blessedness.” Notice that in the parable, the Lord says the same three things to the servants who used their time, talents, and treasures to benefit others. First, He commends them as good and faithful servants. As children of God, we long to please our Father in heaven, and to hear His praise of us in this way is indeed one of the core desires of our hearts. Second, He rewards them much because they have been faithful over a little. What we sow in this life will become a great harvest of blessings for us in the eternal Kingdom. Lastly, He tells them that the result of their work and faithfulness is divine joy. Once again, there is nothing our hearts desire more than eternal joy. God created us to live in an eternal joyful communion with Him. To love God above all things and to love our neighbor as ourselves means precisely recognizing who God is and who we are in relation to Him. We acknowledge His infinite love for us and all the gifts He has given us. Therefore, we also recognize that our true selves rest in being beloved children of God, so we give back to Him and others what He has given us. This is how God intends His Kingdom to flourish, and it is in that way that we are faithful to Him and our neighbors, and enter in the eternal joy He has promised us.

Super Bowl Party!

Its time for the second annual Super Bowl Party! Sunday Feb.11, 2024 at 5 pm. In the church hall. We will have a potluck dinner, please bring a dish to share! We will also have some fun games to play as we watch the big game.

Children's Greek Dancing Lessons:All children are invited to Greek dancing lessons in preparation for the Sunday, March 24th Greek Independence Day Celebration.  Lessons will be on February 11th, and 18th; and March 3rd and 17th following services in the Sunday School Classroom.

 

 Church Front Doors: We completed all the preparations and placed the order for our Church's new front doors. The doors will arrive and be installed sometime in January 2024, since they are custom made and production takes about 16 weeks. We appreciate your support in helping to cover the cost of the new doors for our Church.

 Coffee Hour

 A 2024 sign-up sheet is available for parishioners to sign-up to provide Coffee Hour refreshments in the Church Social Hall.  If you prefer to sponsor a Sunday's coffee hour, please contact Sandy Sardelis (540-247-8786; sardelis2@comcast.net) to make arrangements.

Ladies Philoptochos News

 

Apokriatiko Glendi

Philoptochos invites you to an evening of fellowship and fun as we "bid farewell to meat" on Saturday, March 9th starting at 5:00p.m. at Oak Hill Barn (18320 Yellow Schoolhouse Rd., Round Hill, VA).  Dress is semi-formal with "masquerade flair."  Cost is $25.00 per person, children 12 and under free (drinks and food included).  Purchase tickets during Coffee Hour or contact Angela Tsiatsos (charity.dormition@gmail.com; (304) 886-7557). All proceeds help Philoptochos continue its ministry of charitable and benevolent outreach.

February General Meeting and Service Project

     All parishioners are invited to attend our next general meeting on Sunday, Feb. 18th after coffee hour. Afterwards, we will be packing ‘birthday kits’ for families with food insecurity. If you would like to donate cake mix boxes, candles, frosting cans, 12 oz. Sprite cans (for white/yellow cake), 12 oz. Coke cans (for chocolate cake), or 9x13 foil cake pans with lids, please coordinate with Angela Tsiatsos (304-886-7557), email us, or place donations in the collection box by Feb. 11th to help with planning. Kits will be donated to CCAP.

 Cookbook

We are requesting new recipes for the next edition of the cookbook before publishing.  Cookbooks will be sold to support the philanthropic work of Philoptochos.  We would like to invite more parishioners to participate to reflect our diverse parish.
