Apolytikion of the Church in the Fourth Mode
The truth of thy deeds has led thy flock to believe in thee, as a canon of faith and as a holy image of gentleness and as a teacher of temperance. Thou has therefore acquired through thy humility the greatest heights and riches through poverty. Father and hierarch Nicholas intercede with Christ our God entreating that our souls be saved.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.
BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Silas, Silvan, Crescens, Epenetus and Andronicus the Apostles of the 70
Saint Silas was a companion and fellow labourer of the Apostle Paul: "And Paul chose Silas and departed...and he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches" (Acts 15:40-41). He later became Bishop of Corinth, and reposed in peace. Saint Silvanos became Bishop of Thessalonica, and also reposed in peace. Saint Crescents, whom Saint Paul mentions in his Second Epistle to Timothy(4:10), became Bishop of Chalcedon, and brought many to the Faith. As for him whom the Apostle of the Nations praises as "my well-beloved Epenetus, the first-fruits of Achaia unto Christ" (Roman 16:5), he became Bishop of Carthage, and after enduring many afflictions from the idolators, and bringing many of them to Christ, he departed to the Lord.

Eudocimus the Righteous of Cappadocia
Saint Eudocimus was from Cappadocia, the son of pious and most illustrious parents, patricians in rank. He especially cultivated chastity and mercy, the one by never meeting the gaze of a woman, the other by cheerfully providing the needs of the poor. When he was made military commander of Cappadocia, he continued in his righteous ways, showing mercy and uprightness in all his dealings. Having so lived in piety, quietly and without ostentation, he was called from this life at the age of thirty-three, about the year 840, during the reign of the Iconoclast Theophilus. Not long after his burial, his grave became a fountain of unending miracles, as God revealed the virtue that Eudocimus had striven to hide; when his grave was later opened, his body was found incorrupt. His holy relics were translated to Constantinople.

Joseph the Righteous of Arimathea
Saint Joseph of Arimathea was a prominent Jewish leader during the time of Jesus Christ. He is mentioned in the Gospels as being a rich man from Armiathea who was a secret disciple of Christ due to his status in the Sanhedrin. After the crucifixion and death of our Lord, Joseph approached Pontius Pilate out of piety and asked for the body of Jesus so that he might bury it honorably. He, together with Saint Nicodemus, removed the body of Christ from the cross in the presence of the Theotokos and the Myrrh-Bearing Women, wrapped it in a linen shroud, anointed it with spices, and laid it in a new tomb that he owned. This disciple later traveled the world proclaiming the Gospel until he reposed in peace in England. The Church commemorates him individually on July 31st and along with the Myrrh-Bearing Women and Nicodemus on the 3rd Sunday of Pascha (the Sunday of the Holy Myrrh-Bearers).

Procession of the Precious Cross
Because of the many diseases that occur in the month of August, the custom prevailed of old in Constantinople to carry the precious Wood of the Cross in procession throughout the city for its sanctification and its deliverance from illnesses. It was brought forth from the imperial treasury on the last day of July and placed upon the Holy Table of the Great Church of the Holy Wisdom; and beginning today, until the Dormition of the Theotokos, it was carried in procession throughout the city and was set forth for veneration before the people.

Phocas the Martyr
Saint Phocas was a gardener in a small village on the south coast of the Black Sea. He lived a simple life, carrying out acts of piety and love for all around him, even serving the pagans of the village, some of who left their ways and followed Christ. The local governor heard of this and sent soldiers to kill him. The saint stumbled upon these very soldiers and, without disclosing his name, ministered to them by receiving them into his home, feeding them, and giving them rest. That night he dug a grave for himself in his garden and prepared for all his possessions to be given away after his death.
The next morning, Phocas disclosed to the soldiers that it was he whom they were seeking to kill. The soldiers were distraught, not wanting to kill the saint who had shown them so much kindness. Phocas insisted that they must carry out their mission as he willingly laid his head beneath the sword. They proceeded to execute him and then bury him in the grave he dug in his garden. The site later became a source of miracles, and eventually a Church was erected upon it. Saint Phocas is frequently invoked for those who travel by sea. His life was recorded by Saint Asterius of Amasia (see October 10th).

Parish News & Events
Survivors of Suicide and Loss Grief workshop: Presvytera Julie Honeycutt, LPC will lead a workshop this Tuesday, August 1, beginning at 6:00 pm. Breakout sessions will discuss how to talk about suicide, how to support one another, how to talk to children, how to heal and what to expect in the months to come. A light dinner will be offered, at no cost, at 5:00pm. Please RSVP by calling the church office before noon on Monday, July 31
Rides to Church: If you, or anyone you know, needs a ride to church, please call the office. We will either send a fellow parishioner to pick you up, or call a cab for you. Also, St. Nicholas is compiling a list of individuals who would be interested in picking up fellow parishioners who do not have a ride to church. If you are interested in helping us in this very important ministry, please call the office. It is our hope that everyone who wants to come to St. Nicholas will be able, whether they can drive or not.
The custom of blessing grapes, the first fruits of the harvest, can be traced back to Old Testament times, when farming was a common vocation that so much care and time was given to it. Of the vast variety of produce, grapes had a special place of honor and were considered the "first fruits", because they were the first produce of harvest. Everyone is welcome to bring grapes to the service of the Holy Transfiguration next Sunday, August 6. Thank you very much.
Iconography Phase III – Dome:
Funding for Phase III – Dome is 90% completed. As the funding balance comes to a conclusion, all are invited and encouraged to consider making a contribution within one’s means towards the Icon of Christ Pantocrator, the Almighty. Forms are available at the Church office or on the Church web-site, or at the iconography information table in the Social Hall with updated displays.
Stewardship: The Parish Council is seeking volunteers to help our Parish improve our Stewardship program. Please join the Stewardship Committee meetings which have been scheduled on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm in the conference room. Our next meeting will be held this Wednesday, August 2 at 7:00 pm. Everybody is welcome to join this committee. Your time and talents are valuable to our Saint Nicholas Church. For any questions, please contact George Kokales or Christos Philippou.
Benevolence: Hunger is all around us, even here in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. Many times, we are asked to distribute food and toiletries to families who are hungry and in need. Please consider bringing non perishable food items and toiletries and leaving them on the shelf in the exo-narthex. Thank you and God Bless You.

Spanakopita and tiropita ($25/tray), pastitsio ($75/tray), dolmathes ($160/140 pieces, deposit on pan/lid $25). Fellowship Hours: During the next few months while the iconography is being installed, fellowship hours will be held in the hallway. Please be mindful of the carpeting and take extra care with your coffee and refreshments. Thank you for your patience.
As you know, the Parish Council has traditionally been responsible for hosting the coffee hour if no one has volunteered. Since we have had a decline of volunteers, please consider hosting a fellowship hour. Please contact the Church office and offer your assistance. Remember, the fellowship hours do not have to be elaborate. Coffee and donuts are fine. Thank you, the Parish Council.
Assumption of the Theotokos: Great Vespers for the feast of the Assumption of the Theotokos will be held Monday, Aug.14 at 7:00 pm at the Assumption Church in St. Clair Shores and at 6:00 pm at the Assumption Church in Grand Blanc.
Flowers: If you are interested in purchasing flowers to decorate the icons for any upcoming feastday, please contact Lambrini Lagos or the Church office.
Donor Match: Kosta Flevaris, cousin to Faye Sekaros, Kay Foster and Nick Roopas, has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and is in urgent need of a stem cell transplant. The best chance for a match is through the Greek community. If anyone is interested in being tested, a cheek swab can be sent to you to be mailed back, and the testing done at no cost. Guidelines for receiving Holy Communion
GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION
For Orthodox Christians:
When preparing to receive Holy Communion, please remain quietly in your pews until an Usher directs you to approach from the center aisle. Your prayerful attention helps sustain the solemnity of the Divine Liturgy for those praying the “Prayers of Preparation” and following Holy Communion the “Prayers of Thanksgiving.”
For Non-Orthodox Christians:
We welcome to our worship those Christians not fully united with us (canonically). It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we cannot extend a general invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.

Please fill out the form on the notepads in the pews and put it in our collection tray so we may welcome you to our Parish. You are welcome to join us in the Social Hall for our Fellowship Hour following the Divine Liturgy. Please note, Holy Communion is reserved for prepared Orthodox Christians. Visitors are welcome to receive the Antidoro (Blessed Bread), which is distributed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.
