Children in Church

Our children are blessings from our Lord.  We are entrusted to provide and equip them with the proper tools to one day navigate through life with its joys and challenges.  Church is one environment where we can begin to show children proper behaviors that will benefit them through life.  Scripture tells us to raise them with wisdom and instruction.  Each age has its own challenges.  Each age has the potential for growth.  Teach your children how to behave while in church.  There is a proper prayer attitude.  There is proper respect to be shown to all the people who are here to pray with them.

For those with infants and toddlers, it's never too early to show them proper posture in prayer.  Yes, prayer can be singing and prayer is also quiet. Prayer is subtle movement in place.  Prayer is not playtime.  Prayer is a time to focus our attention toward God.

For older children, it is time to show them what is written in our Liturgical Books.  Teach them to follow along while we read and singing the services.  As Psalm 46:10 teaches us “Be still and know that I am God”.  Prayer teaches us how to be attuned to our God.  Prayer in church helps us to be disciplined in worship.

February, 2024

Dear Members and Friends of St George,

We are excited to celebrate the 100th Year Anniversary of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church Community. Over 100 years ago, our ancestors founded this beautiful community in Bakersfield.

This celebration comes full circle by honoring our community with a special Greek Dinner and Dance on Saturday, June 1st, 2024. In addition, we will have a Commemorative Book available for purchase that will highlight the historical significance of our wonderful community.

The evening begins with a hosted Champagne and Wine reception in the Hellenic Hall from 6:00-7:00pm. In addition, the church will be open for visitation. At 7:00pm, guests will be escorted to the park for an Authentic Greek Dinner under the stars. The price for the event is $100 per person. A no-host bar will also be available during dinner.

This event would not be complete without the beautiful sounds of Greek Music in the air provided by the Helios Band. Everyone is welcome to dance. Also, enjoy a special performance by our very own St. George Dance Troupe.

A Commemorative Book representing the past 100 years of our community includes histories of our founding families and the origin of our church. It will also include various ethnicities that have become a part of our church community today. You can honor your family by purchasing space in the book which will include a family photo(s).
The deadline to submit a photo(s) is March 17th.

Supporters and friends within the Bakersfield community may also show their appreciation by placing an ad in the Event Program that all guests will receive.
The deadline to submit ads is April 15th.

See the forms below for more information and payment options.

For any questions, please contact Susan, St. George Church Secretary, at 661-325-8694 or email: stgeosecretary@gmail.com.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Tone. Psalm 146.5;134.3.
Great is our Lord, and great is his power.
Verse: Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 8:8-13; 9:1-2.

Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall.

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Fourth Tone.

Fourth Tone.

Gospel Reading

Judgment Sunday (Meatfare Sunday)
The Reading is from Matthew 25:31-46

The Lord said, "When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Tone

Thou didst abolish death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open Paradise to the thief; Thou didst transform the myrrh-bearers' lamentation, and didst bid Thine Apostles to preach that Thou art risen, O Christ God, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Tone

As a liberator of prisoners, and as a guardian of the poor, a doctor of the sick, a defender of kings. Trophy bearer, O Great Martyr George. Intercede to Christ our God, and save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the First Tone

O God, when You come upon the earth in glory, the whole world will tremble. A river of fire will bring all before Your Judgment Seat and the books will be opened, and everything in secret will become public. At that time, deliver me from the fire which never dies, and enable me to stand by Your right hand, O Judge most just.
