AVOID A WINTER PARKING TICKET by observing city guidelines:  If the day of the week is an even number then we park on the church side of the street.  If the day of the week is an odd number then we park across from the church.  This Sunday is an even number, park on the same side of the street as the church.

PRAYER REQUESTS Please lift up prayer for parishioners' loved ones and friends: Seraphima (Maria's daughter) who suffered a stroke last week, is hospitalized and now recovering.  Please also keep Jaye in your prayers who is also in recovery from a stroke.  Her recovery has been slow, but she is making good progress and is grateful for your continued prayers.  And some good news:  Dimitrios, Stelios and Denise have all had improvements in their health over recent weeks.  They and their loved ones send thanks for all the prayer report they received from our St. George family.

NO SUNDAY SCHOOL TODAY  Mrs. Bucklin cannot be with us today.  But she promises to be back next week with TWO new Greek letters and a fun class--see you then!

TODAY is the commemoration of St. Leo the Great, Pope of Rome from the fifth century.  It is also Fr. Leo's Name Day.  Other commemorations this week:  Monday, 19 Feb - Ss. Philemon & Archippus of the 70 and St. Philothei, Martyr of Athens; Friday, 23 Feb - St. Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna.

TODAY'S FELLOWSHIP HOUR  It's the perfect time to wish Fr. Leo XRONIA POLLA!  Please bring a favorite dish for the table to help celebrate this special day.  A main will be provided and Cathy's bringing the cake.

A NEW POINT PERSON  Nina Fearon has accepted the challenge of updating our parish contact database.  Thank you, Nina!  The first thing she'll need is the most up to date information from you.  Please supply this information directly to her:  First & Last Name (include spouse's name if applicable); Postal address; Telephone number(s) and which person's phone it relates to; email address and if it's preferable to text you at your cell number. Your info will not be published--it will be maintained here only to better serve the needs of parishioners and keep everyone updated as necessary.

Please email your information to: nina.zagva@gmail.com.  Or you can write your information on paper and send it to the church office, attn: Nina Fearon (St. George GOC / 90 Sanford Street / Bangor, ME 04401).  Please submit your information this week if possible. We are trying to avoid the use of texting for this submission.  Thank you for your understanding and participation.

HELP FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOOD FOOD PANTRY  The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter (263 Main Street) has reached out to us asking for staple foods for their food pantry which has run low on provisions.  Please add some staple items to your shopping cart weekly for the homeless shelter.  Leave your donation in the church office.  Jack B has graciously offered to drop off the donations regularly.  Protein foods are welcome and especially gluten free items as many people suffer with digestive problems.  Canned Vienna sausages and SPAM are both GF and good, easy to use, sources of protein.  Please check out this link to learn more about the shelter's needs and how you can help meet them.  This is our neighborhood and these are our neighbors:  https://www.bangorareashelter.org/support-us/donate-to-the-bangor-area-shelter/

PLEASE HELP ST. GEORGE RAISE A BIT OF EXTRA INCOME by turning in bottles and cans for redemption at Damon's Beverage and Redemption Center at 700 Hogan Road in Bangor.  Last year St. George received just shy of $400 for the year by this redemption method--every little bit helps.  Thank you!

GOD NOTICES  The upkeep of our church shows love for God and the beauty of His house.  When we walk in and see a well kept area, it adds to the reverence we feel for our spiritual home and the welcome it affords those who enter.  Each week after services, vacuuming of the nave and narthex needs to be done. Would volunteers step up and do the vacuuming on Sunday when it's obvious it's not already been done?  It does not need to be the same person every week and can be done before leaving for home.  This ministry is much appreciated.  Most know that the church does not have a janitor and relies on the goodwill of parishioners to keep things looking nice. Thank you to all who will participate.

SPECIAL THANKS to our young adults who often tidy up our sacred space.  We're always grateful for your ministry!

Epistle Reading

Fourth Tone.

Prokeimenon. Fourth Tone. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1.

Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Sunday of the Canaanite

Sunday of the Canaanite
The Reading is from Matthew 15:21-28

At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.

Saints and Feasts

February 18

Leo the Great, Pope of Rome

According to some, this Saint was born in Rome, but according to others in Tyrrenia (Tuscany), and was consecrated to the archiepiscopal throne of Rome in 440. In 448, when Saint Flavian, Archbishop of Constantinople, summoned Eutyches, an archimandrite in Constantinople, to give account for his teaching that there was only one nature in Christ after the Incarnation, Eutyches appealed to Saint Leo in Rome. After Saint Leo had carefully examined Eutyches's teachings, he wrote an epistle to Saint Flavian, setting forth the Orthodox teaching of the person of Christ, and His two natures, and also counseling Flavian that, should Eutyches sincerely repent of his error, he should be received back with all good will. At the Council held in Ephesus in 449, which was presided over by Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria (and which Saint Leo, in a letter to the holy Empress Pulcheria in 451, was the first to call "The Robber Council"), Dioscorus, having military might behind him, did not allow Saint Leo's epistle to Flavian to be read, although repeatedly asked to do so; even before the Robber Council was held, Dioscorus had uncanonically received the unrepentant Eutyches back into communion. Because Saint Leo had many cares in Rome owing to the wars of Attila the Hun and other barbarians, in 451 he sent four delegates to the Fourth Ecumenical Council, where 630 Fathers gathered in Chalcedon during the reign of Marcian, to condemn the teachings of Eutyches and those who supported him. Saint Leo's epistle to Flavian was read at the Fourth Council, and was confirmed by the Holy Fathers as the Orthodox teaching on the incarnate person of our Lord; it is also called the "Tome of Leo." The Saint wrote many works in Latin; he reposed in 461. See also Saint Anatolius, July 3.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone

The women disciples of the Lord, having learned from the Angel the joyous news of the Resurrection and having rejected the ancestral decision, then told the apostles elatedly: Death has been stripped of its power; Christ God has risen, granting to the world His great mercy.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.
