Stewardship: Giving to God What Belongs to God—Part Fourteen

My Life as a Steward—Be a Steward of TODAY

This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24

Good  morning Prayer Team!

In a world where we are constantly looking with regret at the past and with hope for the future, I find myself increasingly more focused on the present. As stewards, we are called to be stewards of TODAY. We are called to be present and attentive to the opportunities and challenges of TODAY.

In Luke 12: 16-21, Jesus tells this parable:

“The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, “What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample good laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is he who lays us treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

There are two lessons to be taken from this parable. First, one has to be rich towards God. Accumulating material riches may help us in this life, but we can’t take them with us into everlasting life. The second message is that the man was so concerned with his future financial security, that he didn’t have an eye on the opportunities of today. The Lord called him a “fool” because on that very night, the man was going to die, and there would be no more “todays” for the man to help others. This man was so concerned with his own things and his own life, that he wasn’t a good servant to others. He had so many things that he had nowhere to store them, and rather than considering sharing of his abundance with those who have nothing, he decided to build bigger storehouses in which to store his goods.

Christ tells us repeatedly, that the two greatest commandments are to love Him and love one another. There is no sin in accumulating material things—I’m so thankful to have a house, a car, to have food to eat, clothes to wear, and even enjoy a few “luxuries” like an occasional vacation or a nice set of priest vestments. However, as we accumulate for ourselves, we are supposed to think also of sharing with others. Because a good steward uses what he has to help other people.

There should, however, always be a sense of immediacy when it comes to helping others. There are many people who think “I’ll help once I’m out of college,” or “I’ll help once I have my kids,” or “I’ll help once I’ve attained a certain level of wealth,” or “I’ll help once my kids are out of college,” or “I’ll help once I’m retired and don’t have to work anymore.” The problem with this thinking is what if we don’t live long enough for these things to happen? What if we are like the man in the parable and TONIGHT is the night our soul will be required of us? The second problem with this thinking is that for most of us, there are years until we retire, or have our kids out of college, or until we attain the level of wealth we consider sufficient (some people will continue to raise their definition of “sufficiency” and never attain it). And in between now and then, many years will go by and many opportunities to serve will go by and many people will go unserved and won’t get helped.

One bold statement to make in our daily prayers is asking God to send someone into our path today who needs help.

The other bold statement to make in our daily prayers is a statement of thanks to God for today. Why is that a bold statement? Because most people think that most days are “mundane” because on face value, most days are mundane. They are filled with a mundane repetition of work, childcare, travel, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc. When we thank God for the blessing of today, we recognize that even if on the surface, our day may seem mundane, that every day is an opportunity to glorify God, to help others and to be a good steward. Ideally, our first thoughts each day should be thoughts of gratitude for the blessing of today. For as we read in Psalm 118:24, “This is the DAY (not the month, the year of the lifetime) which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

I thank Thee that Thou hast answered me and hast become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we beseech Thee, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech Thee, give us success! Blessed be he who enters in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and He has given us light. Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar! Thou art my God, and I will give thanks to Thee; Thou art my God, I will extol Thee. O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 118: 21-29

Be a good steward of TODAY and its opportunities and start your day with gratitude for the new day, asking God for the opportunity to serve someone today!

Dormition Fast Study - Our Most Holy Theotokos

August 3 and 10, Friday morning at 10:30am Sharp

How much do we really know about the Theotokos, especially after her Son and our Christ's Resurrection?  What was her life like after that?  Did she travel?  What did she do?  How do we honor her?

This study will explore some of these questions, particularly focusing on the Paraklesis or Small Supplicatory Canon which is chanted to her in our church most weekday evenings during the Dormition Lenten Period.

Please join us for the brief study honoring the Theotokos!

A Lenten lucheon will follow the study.  Please bring a Lenten dish as you are able.

Everyone is welcome!  Bring a friend!

In the Hospital? Home-Bound?

Please let the Church Office know!  In today’s age of information privacy, churches are not notified when parishioners are admitted to hospitals, nursing homes or other care facilities. Both those facilities and your church depend on having the church notified by a friends or family member so pastoral care and outreach can be offered. The same goes for those homebound. If you or any of your loved ones are in any of these situations, please contact the Church Office at 973-584-0388  to request a visit from our priest Fr. John Theodosion or our new and wonderful Visitation Ministry. Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode

When the stone had been sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Thine immaculate Body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life unto the world. Wherefore, the powers of the Heavens cried out to Thee, O Lifegiver: Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Thy Kingdom. Glory to Thy dispensation, O only Friend of man.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Transfiguration in the Fourth Mode

Come, let us all welcome the Transfiguration of Christ, and joyously celebrate the bright prefestival, O ye faithful, and let us cry: Nigh at hand now is the day of God-given gladness, as the Sovereign Master goeth up on Mount Tabor to flash forth with the beautiful light of His Divinity.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

All of mortal nature now divinely shineth on this day with the divine Transfiguration ere the time; and in great gladness, she crieth out: Christ is transfigured, and saveth the race of man.

Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Our Lord had spoken to His disciples many times not only concerning His Passion, Cross, and Death, but also concerning the coming persecutions and afflictions that they themselves would endure. Since all these evils were near at hand, but the enjoyment of good things which they hoped to receive in their stead was yet to come, our Savior desired to give them full assurance, evidently and openly, concerning that glory which is prepared for those who endure to the end. Therefore, fulfilling that which He had promised shortly before, that "there be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in His Kingdom" (Matt. 16:28), He took His three foremost disciples and ascended Mount Tabor, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as the light. Suddenly, together with this dread and marvelous effulgence of light, there appeared those pinnacles of the Prophets, Moses and Elias, who spoke with the Lord Jesus concerning His saving Passion which was about to take place. Standing before Him as reverent servants, they showed that He is the Lord of both the living and the dead, for Moses came forth from Hades, having died many centuries before, and Elias, as it were from heaven, whither he had been taken up while yet alive. After a little while a radiant cloud overshadowed them and out of the cloud they heard that same voice which had been heard at the Jordan at the Baptism of Christ, testifying to the Divinity of Jesus and saying: "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased; hear ye Him" (Matt. 17: 5).

Such are the marvels, truly worthy of God, celebrated in this present feast, which is an image and prefiguring of the future state of the righteous, whose splendor the Lord spoke of, saying: "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun" (Matt. 13:43). It is because of this that the Kontakion of this Feast is said daily (when there is not a great feast) in the Service of the Typica in perpetual commemoration of the glory that will be the lot of the Saints. According to tradition, the Lord's Transfiguration came to pass forty days before His Crucifixion; this is why the Transfiguration is celebrated forty days before the Exaltation of the Cross.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Tenth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:1-14

At that time, being raised from the dead, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16.

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

First Mode.

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 17:14-23

At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."

Wisdom of the Fathers

Yet if his unbelief was the cause ... why does He blame the disciples? Signifying, that even without persons to bring the sick in faith, they might in many instances work a cure.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 57 on Matthew 17, 4th Century

For as the faith of the person presenting oftentimes availed for receiving the cure, even from inferior ministers; so the power of the doers oftentimes sufficed, even without belief in those who came to work the miracle.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 57 on Matthew 17, 4th Century
