Virtual Town Hall Meeting on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The Very Reverend and Reverend Clergy  Honorable Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Esteemed Members of the Metropolitan Council, Esteemed Members of the Parish Councils, Philoptochos Sisterhood, Faculty and Students of the Catechetical and Greek Afternoon Schools, Directors and Participants of all Youth Organizations, and all devout Orthodox Christians of the Greek Orthodox Communities of our Holy Metropolis of New Jersey 

My Beloved in the Lord,

 Over the last several months there have been many questions, concerns, heated-debates, and staunch opinions concerning the newly-recognized Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The process that has led to the recognition of this, the 15th autocephalous Church of the Orthodox World, has been lengthy, but filled with prayerful reflection. Since last March, I have had the immense blessing and privilege of serving as a member of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople which had undertaken these deliberations, discussions, and substantial decisions. It has also been a distinct honor to be one of the hierarchs of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to sign the Tomos of Autocephaly recently granted to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. 

It must be expressed that these decisions were made with the utmost care for the Orthodox faithful of Ukraine who are the spiritual children of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and who were, up until recently, under the canonical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Great sensitivity was taken into account to ensure that the manner in which autocephaly was granted complied with the same canonical norms and tradition by which the other Local Churches had received their own autocephaly. In making this decision, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Holy and Sacred Synod did not seek to do that which was easy, but that which was proper and right. Nevertheless, there are still sincere concerns and questions from numerous Orthodox Christians throughout the world concerning this matter as well as misconceptions and fallacies circulated for nefarious reasons by others.

For this reason, on January 26, 2019 at 1:00pm Eastern time, the Archons of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle under the leadership of their Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Protopresbyter, Fr. Alexander Karloutsos, and the Commander of the Order, Dr. Anthony Limberakis will be sponsoring an Open Virtual Town Hall meeting on the subject of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine featuring a conversation including His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel of France and other expert panelists from various Orthodox jurisdictions. Orthodox clergy and laity are highly encouraged to listen to this discussion and to participate at the end of the panelists’ discussion at which time those who have dialed in to listen will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panel. This initiative is of the utmost importance since it will help to answer pertinent questions regarding this important topic in an honest and forthright manner while helping to dispel the inaccuracies spread by some individuals. 

It is my sincerest prayer and hope that all faithful Orthodox Christians will find the time to participate in this Open Virtual Town Hall Meeting so that everyone may be aware of the events occurring in the Orthodox Church and to better understand why and how the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was given autocephaly. This initiative will also offer all Orthodox Christians a valuable and an essential understanding of our canonical tradition and traditional Orthodox ecclesiology. Praying that you are all granted the manifold blessings of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ in this New Year, I remain

Cyprus Taverna Night POSTPONED!

The Cyprus Taverna Night that was scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed due to the impending bad weather.

The new date is February 2nd.

Three Holy Hierarchs & Greek Letters Day

After Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 27th The Hellenic Afternoon School 

will present their  “Three Hierarchs Program”

 

Trip to Taylor PA to see Myrrh-Streaming Icon of the Panaghia – Wed January/30th

Our St. Andrew Community is planning a trip to Taylor, PA to St. George Church to see the myrrh-streaming of the Panaghia. – everyone is invited!

There is an Akathist every Wednesday which starts at 6 pm and lasts about 30 minutes or so. People are invited to venerate the icon and often, Father Mark (the priest at St. George) takes the icon out of its case and tilts the icon so the myrrh drips into people’s hands.  It really is something to experience.

Girls Volleyball program

We are currently trying to build our Girls Volleyball program. We are partnering with Garden State Elite Volleyball Club to help us teach volleyball fundamentals.

Location: St. Andrew gym
Time: Sundays 1.30-3pm)
Dates: 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 4/7 and 4/14
Cost (for all sessions): $90
All St. Andrew girls grades 6th – 11th are invited to participate. Even if your daughter isn’t sure if she wants to play Volleyball it is a great opportunity to sign up and try it. The coaches are professionals that have been coaching volleyball for several years (gsevc.com).

Caregivers Workshop #2

On Sunday, February 3rd at 12:45pm in Room 102 an informal caregiver forum for discussion with and about caregivers, will be led by Andi Morris from Arden Courts of Whippany. Our discussions will range from practical tips for coping with chronic diseases, avoiding caregiver burn out, and information about community resources. If there are other topics you are interested in, please let us know. If there is enough interest, we will conduct another forum or workshop and cover more detail.  Thank you Catherine Rabidis

House Blessings

Fr. John Theodosion will begin the House Blessings in our community on the 1st week in January 2019.  St. Andrew Parishioners will be notified of his pending visit.  Please look for a “Blue Post Card” indicating date and time.

We will also be announcing in the weekly bulletin the towns that Fr. John will be visiting. If you don’t receive “Blue Post Card” when your town is listed, please contact the office ASAP and make arrangements for «Agiasmo» in your home.

NOTE: Please do not offer Fr. John any food or snacks. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated, but unfortunately his time is very limited and will only delay his next visit.

St Thomas Church services at St. Andrew on Sundays 

Our friends the parishioners of St. Thomas Orthodox Church of India, located on West Blackwell St. in Dover had a big loss last week. Their church was damaged by a fire and they requested our help.  We at St. Andrew will be making our Gym available to them so they are able to hold their Sunday services. We ask you to please not enter the gym while their services are in session. We have also allocated the parking lot in the back of the gym for their parishioners.

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant (me) patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal (me) as Your servant and grant (me) the gift of complete health. Removal of the Relics of John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople

This event took place on this day in the year 438, when Saint Theodosius the Younger had been Emperor for thirty years; he was the son of Arcadius, and Eudoxia, who had exiled Saint John. The Archbishop of Constantinople at that time was Proclus, who had been the Saint's disciple (see Nov. 13 and Nov. 20).

Synaxis of The Three Hierarchs: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, & John Chrysostom

This common feast of these three teachers was instituted a little before the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous men of that time. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to distinguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopal see and again took up the monastic life in a monastery in Constantinople. He reposed during the reign of the aforementioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus (1081-1118).

Trypho the Martyr

The Holy Martyr Trypho was from Lampsacus in Phrygia, and as a young man he tended geese. Being filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, he also healed sufferings and cast out demons. During the reign of the Emperor Decius, about the year 250, he was betrayed as a Christian and taken to Nicaea, where he was beaten, bound to horses and dragged over rough ground, then dragged naked over nails; his sides were burned with torches; finally he was sentenced to beheading, but gave up his holy soul in his torments before the stroke of the sword. Saint Trypho is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is also invoked for the protection of gardens from insects and pests.

The Presentation of Our Lord and Savior in the Temple

When the most pure Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary's forty days of purification had been fulfilled, she took her first-born Son to Jerusalem on this, the fortieth day after His birth, that she might present Him in the temple according to the Law of Moses, which teaches that every first-born male child be dedicated to God, and also that she might offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons, as required by the Law (Luke 2:22-24; Exod. 13:2; Lev. 12:6-8). On this same day, a just and devout man, the greatly aged Symeon, was also present in the temple, being guided by the Holy Spirit. For a long time, this man had been awaiting the salvation of God, and he had been informed by divine revelation that he would not die until he beheld the Lord's Christ. Thus, when he beheld Him at that time and took Him up into his aged arms, he gave glory to God, singing: "Now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, O Master. . ." And he confessed that he would close his eyes joyfully, since he had seen the Light of revelation for the nations and the Glory of Israel (Luke 2:25-32). From ancient times, the Holy Church has retained this tradition of the churching of the mother and new-born child on the fortieth day and of the reading of prayers of purification.

The Apodosis of the Feast of the Meeting in the Temple is usually on the 9th of February. This, however, may vary if the Feast falls within the period of the Triodion. Should this occur, the Typicon should be consulted for specific information concerning the Apodosis of the Feast.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 7:26-28; 8:1-2.

Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.

Ὁ νόμος γὰρ ἀνθρώπους καθίστησιν ἀρχιερεῖς, ἔχοντας ἀσθένειαν· ὁ λόγος δὲ τῆς ὁρκωμοσίας τῆς μετὰ τὸν νόμον, υἱὸν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τετελειωμένον. Κεφάλαιον δὲ ἐπὶ τοῖς λεγομένοις· τοιοῦτον ἔχομεν ἀρχιερέα, ὃς ἐκάθισεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θρόνου τῆς μεγαλωσύνης ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς, τῶν ἁγίων λειτουργός, καὶ τῆς σκηνῆς τῆς ἀληθινῆς, ἣν ἔπηξεν ὁ κύριος, καὶ οὐκ ἄνθρωπος·

The Reading is from Luke 19:1-10

At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

Κατὰ Λουκᾶν 19:1-10

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, διήρχετο τὴν ῾Ιεριχώ· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι καλούμενος Ζακχαῖος, καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἀρχιτελώνης, καὶ οὗτος ἦν πλούσιος, καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν τὸν ᾿Ιησοῦν τίς ἐστι, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου, ὅτι τῇ ἡλικίᾳ μικρὸς ἦν. καὶ προδραμὼν ἔμπροσθεν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ συκομορέαν, ἵνα ἴδῃ αὐτόν, ὅτι ἐκείνης ἤμελλε διέρχεσθαι. καὶ ὡς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον, ἀναβλέψας ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἶδεν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτόν· Ζακχαῖε, σπεύσας κατάβηθι· σήμερον γὰρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου δεῖ με μεῖναι. καὶ σπεύσας κατέβη, καὶ ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν χαίρων. καὶ ἰδόντες πάντες διεγόγγυζον λέγοντες ὅτι παρὰ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἀνδρὶ εἰσῆλθε καταλῦσαι. σταθεὶς δὲ Ζακχαῖος εἶπε πρὸς τὸν Κύριον· ἰδοὺ τὰ ἡμίση τῶν ὑπαρχόντων μου, Κύριε, δίδωμι τοῖς πτωχοῖς, καὶ εἴ τινός τι ἐσυκοφάντησα, ἀποδίδωμι τετραπλοῦν. εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς ὅτι σήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετο, καθότι καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς ᾿Αβραάμ ἐστιν. ἦλθε γὰρ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλός.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For Christ's presence is like that of some life-giving, scented balsam which restores health, enriches life and gives savor to the soul, the thoughts, the words of a man. In brief, distance from Christ means corruption and death, and closeness to Him means salvation and life.
