The Church
We live in a time when many religions are trying to remake themselves in order to fit the social and political atmosphere of modernity. Some have brought something like a Rock Concert presentation into their brand of worship. Others have made so many changes in their worship it is almost unrecognizable to their older worshippers. However, Christian Orthodoxy has been coined as the slowest moving religion in the world and for good reason.
Every day of the week we can Orthodox Christians around the world celebrating the Divine Liturgy. It is this celebration that unites all Orthodox Christians throughout the world. Each individual person is a participant in the Divine, and Public Work of the People. “All who have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ, Alleluia,” as this beautiful baptismal hymn states. We are then part and parcel of His Body, the Church. “The Church is the realization (or actualization), in time of the Kingdom of Heaven for all who believe in, live in, move in, and have their being in Christ.” . . . It is the “Body of Christ” in this world.
As you can see, the Church then becomes for its members the “Ark of Salvation” for all who believe in Him. Without the “Ark of Salvation,” no one would be able to pass from this world into the “Eternal Kingdom.” So it is a real Ark, as was Noah’s, and not some fable that was contrived by some malevolent person as a sick joke. The triumphant hymn that we sing throughout the Paschal Season declares with great clarity the wonderful gift Christ has given us. “Christ is Risen from the Dead, by Death, He has Trampled Down Death, and to Those in the Tombs, Bestowing Life.” Whichever translation you use when you sing this glorious hymn, the meaning will still be the same. He conquered Death by His own Death for all who believe in Him. Death no longer has a hold on us!
Moreover, if we are and make up the Body of Christ, the “Ecclesia,” then His Risen Body will also include us on that blessed Day of His Second Coming, and it will, in turn, take us into Life Eternal. The Body must always be fortified, and the Sacraments are what feed and keep the Body strong and alive. All the tools in the Church's toolbox keep it healthy and witness His triumph over death. Even the Sacramentals, that which is not a Sacrament, are necessary in order to keep the Body well. Holy Water is a Sacramental, and we all know how important that is to the life of the Church and our own health. All these tools have been given to the Church to assist us in our earthly lives. Since we are all in need of continual relief from our fallen nature, these Sacraments and Sacramentals support us, and they keep every individual healthy that make up the Body of Christ, and on the road toward theosis. So the Church is not a building or some earthly structure, but it is the living people who make up the Body of Christ and in turn the Body of the Church.
Furthermore, Father Georges Florovsky, a well know and renowned theologian who was a professor at Harvard University during the twentieth century writes in one of his works entitled, "Bible, Church, Tradition: An Eastern Orthodox View," states that; "The Incarnation is being completed in the Church. And, in a certain sense, the Church is Christ Himself, in His all-embracing plenitude (cf. 1 Cor. xii, 12). This identification has been suggested and vindicated by St. Augustine: 'Non solum nos Christianos factos esse, sed Christum.' [Not only to make us Christians, but Christ.]' . . .
The Church has to organize the new life of the converted. The Church has, as it were, to exhibit the new pattern of existence, the new mode of life, that of the 'world to come.' The Church is here, in this world, for its salvation. But just for this reason it has to oppose and to renounce 'this' world . . . Christians are incorporated into Christ and Christ abides in them—this intimate union constitutes the mystery of the Church. The Church is, as it were, the place and the mode of the redeeming presence of the Risen Lord in the redeemed world. 'The Body of Christ is Christ Himself. The Church is Christ, as after His Resurrection He is present with us and encounters us here on earth."
Finally, as you can see we are one with Christ Himself in a Baptism like His. We are all members of His body through Baptism and members of His physical Church. It is difficult for those living in this world to understand this simple but miraculous relationship. However, as we slowly grow in the Lord and become more Christ-like we will finally reach a state of Theosis (deification), which is the goal of our earthly existence. That is why our worship services are so involved and unchanged throughout the centuries because they have to inculcate within its members His glorious reflection and presence of Him in the Holy Communion and His Church. AMEN!

Fifth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:13-35
At that time, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see." And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.
Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Grave Mode.
Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1
The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
Sunday after Holy Cross
Saint Euphemia was from Chalcedon and lived in virginity. According to some, she suffered martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian, in 303; according to others, in 307. Her sacred relics are preserved in the Patriarchate in Constantinople.
