Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 4th Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20.

BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Mode

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Apolytikion of Saint Nicholas in the 1st Mode

An example of the faith and a life of humility, as a teacher of self-control you did inspire and lead your flock, and through the truthfulness of your deeds, were exalted by greatness through your humility, uplifting all, and by poverty gaining strength. Father and hierarch Saint Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved.

In our Light A Candle program, vigil candle(s) are lit along with an opportunity to submit names to be prayed for at the Prothesis (Preparation).  When lit, the vigil candles last for one week.  Please see the online form on our website or use the link below.  When filling out the online form, please note that only first names are needed, preferably the baptized names, and it's helpful to designate if prayers will be for health or for repose.

SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION (EXOMOLOGISIS)

ORTHODOXY 101 CLASS

Graduation is an important event for you and your child, and it is equally important to us.   We want to honor and congratulate the Class of 2024 by recognizing them in the June Canon of Faith.   Please submit the following information by Friday, May 17th, 2024:

MINISTRY TO STUDENTS AT SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY

In cooperation with the national orthodox ministry to college students - Orthodox Christian Fellowship - we are attempting to form a group at Santa Clara University and are looking to see if we can make contact with any parishioners or anyone you may know who is a student at SCU.  

We would appreciate it if any contact information you may have is sent to me, so we can attempt to form the group this quarter.  Please feel free to view the flyer in the special events section of this e-bulletin and share Fr. ALTAR BOY TRAINING

Altar Boys, please join us on Sunday, April 14th from 12:00pm noon to 12:45pm for Altar Boy Training.  Boys, 7 years old and up, are encouraged to attend if they are interested in becoming altar boys.  Boys will practice entrances, exits, and how to prepare to assist during The Divine Liturgy and during Holy Week services.  The Fathers will be leading the training.  Please meet in the church following Sunday School. If you have any questions, please contact Penny Pagonis at pmpagonis5@gmail.com.

This year, we will do something different than in previous years by including our entire Saint Nicholas community. Please join us on Friday night, April 26th in the Small Hall for our St. Nicholas Lenten Potluck and Palm Folding!  Presvytera Vasso and Presvytera Stephanie will provide a short lesson on making the Palm Crosses in preparation for Palm Sunday.  How nice to share with all of our wonderful parishioners coming together with love, gratitude, and faith as we embark on this holy season.

TIROPITES - FRIDAY, APRIL 26TH

PALM SUNDAY LUNCHEON HOSTED BY PARISH COUNCIL

VOLUNTEERING AT SECOND HARVEST

Putting our Orthodox Faith into action! Join us at Second Harvest Food Bank the 4th Tuesday of every month, 6pm to 8pm, to prepare food for distribution in our Santa Clara County community.  March sessions are full, so our next session is in April.  One in five families in Santa Clara County faces food insecurity.  Help us serve our community while enjoying the fellowship of our Parishioners!  Advance registration is required; vaccination is suggested but not required; open to ages 12 and up.

Join the Kentima Ministry this Lent as we meet during coffee hour in the Senior Room to build new skills and fellowship. Beginning with embroidery basics the class will look to build up to traditional projects while exploring styles and designs from all over Greece.  We will begin about 10 minutes into coffee hour, grab yourself a snack and head over! All ages are welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult. This year’s National YAL Conference will coincide with the Biennial Clergy Laity Congress and National Philoptochos Biennial Convention. Embracing the Clergy Laity Congress theme, "In Christ, We Are One" (Romans 12:4-5), the National YAL Conference has adopted the theme “UNIFY” - aiming to unite young adults from across the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for a five-day experience centered on faith, fellowship, worship, service, and fun. 2024 ST. NICHOLAS AND PHILOPTOCHOS SCHOLARSHIPS

It is with pleasure that we announce the scholarship applications for both St. Nicholas Sunday School and St. Anna Philoptochos are available in the Sunday School office as well as the Church Office.  The cutoff date for both applications is Friday, May 3, 2024 no later than 5:00 p.m.

Qualifications are listed on both applications, and recipients will be announced on Sunday May 19, 2024 following the Divine Liturgy.

School Age Greek Language Classes (3-18 years old)

In-person classes are offered on Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:00 pm - 6:45 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am - 11:45 am (pending registration numbers)

Zoom classes are time flex and are offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays.

In addition to the classes, several assemblies take place annually to celebrate Greek Independence Days (October 28th and March 25th), Christmas, and the end-of-the-school-year party. Parents and other family members participate while the students recite poems, skits, songs, and dances.

COFFEE HOUR TEAMS ARE COMING BACK!

We are excited to announce that with Father James' blessing, we will be discontinuing the majority of youth-ministry hosted coffee hours on Sundays and bringing back a team-led coffee hour.  This way we hope each team will only be responsible for 2 coffee hours per year.  If you haven't already been approached and are interested in having your own team or would like to be placed on a team, please send an email to: coffeehour@saintnicholas.org OR call Penny Pagonis at (408) 772-6229 or Nicole Perakis at (408) 250-0967.  


CHOIR

The Choir is actively recruiting new members!  If you are interested please contact Anthony Pappas at (408) 832-4271.  Men are especially needed, so please consider joining!  We have two options for practice, Sundays after services (with time allowed for the Coffee Hour) and Thursdays at 7:30pm.  Thank you!


HOPE/JOY

We will plan on holding our meetings at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month (directly after Greek School).  Please mark your calendars.  

We hope that all students in grades K-5th can join us! This year, Father Nebojsa has planned an exciting curriculum focusing on the Story of Creation.  Each monthly lesson will be concentrated on a particular day of this journey.  Each meeting will be scheduled for approximately one hour and will include a discussion with Father, an interactive activity and/or craft, refreshments and fellowship.  We want to be inclusive of everyone so please feel free to reach out to Helene if you have any concerns: 209.324.4918.

A HOME FOR ICONS

We are collecting unwanted paper icons, wooden icons, and palms that require disposing, please drop off in the baby room in the Church.  There is a plastic bin located underneath the pew.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Julie via email: j_sarigiannides@yahoo.com.

Please contact the church office at 408-246-2770 if you plan to leave items outside the office or Community Center.
