The Reading is from John 20:1-10

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that He must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15.

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

The Reading is from Luke 8:5-15

The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we chant the Service to the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which gathered in Nicaea in 787 under the holy Patriarch Tarasius and during the reign of the Empress Irene and her son, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, to refute the Iconoclast heresy, which had received imperial support beginning with the Edict issued in 726 by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. Many of the holy Fathers who condemned Iconoclasm at this holy Council later died as Confessors and Martyrs for the holy Icons during the second assult of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, especially during the reigns of Leo the Armenian and Theophilus.

Longinus the Centurion

This Martyr was in the service of Pontius Pilate at the time of Christ our Saviour's Passion. While standing guard at the Cross and beholding the earthquake and all that came to pass, he cried out with fear, "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matt. 27:54). After the Resurrection, he forsook the military and departed for Cappadocia, his homeland, where he preached Christ. By the agency of Pontius Pilate, Tiberius Caesar had him arrested and beheaded.

CRETAN ASSOCIATION - MEMORIAL, ARTOKLASIA, COFFEE HOUR

CRETAN ASSOCIATION – PSELORETES OF DETROIT will be having their annual Memorial, Artoklasia and coffee hour on Sunday, November 13, 2022.


NO COFFEE HOUR - LIONS GAME SUNDAYS

There will be NO coffee hour on the following Sundays due to Lions Games:
October 30th, November 6th; December 4th & 11th; and January 1st.  Thank you for your kind understanding and consideration.


LIONS GAMES

On the Sundays that the Lions are playing a 1:00 PM home game, parishioners are kindly asked to leave the parking lot immediately after church. If you leave your car in the lot for any reason, you will be required to pay for parking at the posted rates.   The church leases the parking lot to Park-Rite.  This is our single largest source of income.  On non-game days, you can stay parked in the lot until 2:00 pm.

FALL GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Our Fall General Assembly will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2022.


FEED THE POOR - ST. PETER AND PAUL IN NOVEMBER

11/19/2022

The Annunciation Cathedral Family will be preparing 100 bagged lunches to feed the poor in November at St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Detroit.  We are in need of donations and volunteers to prepare, assemble and deliver the food.  Preparation and bagging of the lunches will take place on Saturday, November 19th in the Cathedral kitchen at 9:30am.  If we have enough helpers, the project will be complete by 11am.  On Sunday, November 20th, we will need 3 people to deliver the food after the Divine Liturgy.  If you are able to help on either day, please email Will Lianos at wglianos67@gmail.com.

Checks for donations should be made out to the Annunciation Cathedral.  Thank you for your support of this great event that is organized by Alex Shashko every year.


BIBLE STUDY

Bible study will begin mid-November, right around Christmas fast.  More details and information to follow in future bulletins.


SUNDAY SCHOOL

One of the most important things we can do for our children is ensure that they learn about our Orthodox faith.  Religious education should be an important part of their lives.  Classes for the 2022-2023 Sunday School have begun and are available for students from pre-K (age 4) to 12th grade.  Also, if anyone is interested in becoming a Sunday School teacher, please contact Fr. George.


ANNUNCIATION CATHEDRAL CHOIR

Your choir has begun another year in song and we invite you to join us – young and old are welcome in the choir loft.  We accommodate all levels of musicality, and you do not have to read Greek to sing.  We practice once or twice per month, and sing with our whole hearts.   If you have always wanted to try, come sing with us!  We encourage you to offer your talents to your church.   

“Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head:  they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.  Isaiah 51:11

HOLY RELICS – ‘ΑΓΙΑ ΛΕΙΨΑΝΑ

The Holy relic (‘Αγιo Λείψανο) of St. Andrew the Apostle will be on display in the reliquary of the Annunciation Cathedral of Detroit for embracement and veneration for whomever wishes to do so.

The Holy relics have been safe-guarded in the sanctuary of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral for over one hundred years, and it is now the time for them to be venerated and presented to all the faithful Christians.

Investiture of 2022 Archon Class at Patriarchal Divine Liturgy in New York

At the historic Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan, the 2022 Class of Archons were installed in the presence of His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros. His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston, Their Eminences Metropolitans George of Guinea and Nikodimos of Memphis, His Grace Bishop Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church, His Grace Bishop Joachim of Amissos, His Grace Bishop Ierotheos of Evkarpia, and His Grace Bishop Timothy of Hexamilion also concelebrated the liturgy. His Eminence former Archbishop of America Demetrios was present, as well.

I approach this podium full of emotion. Awarding a person is undoubtedly an honor for that person, but I think that this honor also belongs to those who decide on the award. It shows that they have those sensibilities to perceive the surrounding atmosphere, to appreciate events and to honor persons. For these reasons, allow me to dedicate this highly honorable distinction, the "Patriarch Athenagoras" award, to all those who fight day and night for the assertion of all kinds of rights.
