Philoptochos News

Thursday, December 15: Philoptochos Holiday-themed General Meeting

Please join us at 6:30 to jingle, mingle and hear more about your Philoptochos chapter.
As in the past, we will be accepting gently-used, business appropriate attire for men and women to be donated to The Wardrobe (formerly the Career Wardrobe), a non-profit organization whose goal is to eliminate clothing insecurity by outfitting people for life or work.  Clothing combined with personalized support helps more than 5,000 people a year look and feel their best to move forward in their lives.  Everyone…and everything needs a second chance!  Join us for fellowship, meze and an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life.

Matthew25 Ministry News

We are pleased to announce that our tags for the 2022 Angel Tree have been removed from our tree and most of our Sign-Up Genius. Just a friendly reminder that all gift cards and gifts are due to the church by this Sunday, 12/11/22. Remember to attach your tag with the child's name and tag number to your package.

If you didn’t have the chance to pull a tag or get on the Sign-Up Genius, it's NOT too late. We received an email on Saturday that really pulled at our heartstrings, and even though we can’t fulfill their gift requests at this late date… we can certainly provide them with assistance.

It was brought to Matthew 25’s attention by the director of Aspira schools that they have a larger-than-usual number of homeless families desperate for food and clothing.  We ask for gift cards to Shoprite, Walmart, or Visa/Mastercard. Any denomination will help. Please enclose the activation slip with the amount and place it in the Matthew 25 slot in the church office or give it to Lisa Trivelis or Sophia Penning at church. We will deliver them as they come.

We thank you for your support as we are expanding on our Angel Tree requests at this late date.

Homeless Ministry News

Please join us on Thursday, December 29th, for our last serving date of 2022 at Aviator Park!

As we usually do this time of year, we will share a few extra treats to help make the holidays special for those we serve. In addition to our usual offerings, vasilopita, and hot chocolate, we would love to include home-baked Christmas cookies! If you would like to help with this special offering, simply place two or three cookies in zip-lock snack bags and drop them off at church by 12/28. Feel free to add a note with holiday wishes or a kind word of encouragement. This would be a wonderful service activity to include children in, and as always, we welcome everyone's baking skills and donations!

The Homeless Ministry has placed a Christmas Cookie tin ready for your donations on the table by the bookstore. Let’s fill our cookie tin with home-baked goodness and love, letting those less fortunate know that others care!

Please continue bringing in your donations of warm winter clothing. Every item you share helps spread comfort and compassion to needy people.

In Christ's service,

The Homeless Ministry

Stewardship Update

Stewardship Reflection

We wanted to thank all of you for another wonderful and successful year. So much work goes into sustaining and continuing to build up and expand our parish throughout the year, and it’s all due to the hard work, your hard work, and our stewards that continue to make us such a warm and loving parish.

As we look toward 2023, we would love to see a year of increased participation in all aspects of Church life. It would be heartwarming to see more attendance at liturgy and services and more of us involved in ministry life, philanthropic and educational. We also can't neglect to be generous with our treasure when considering our financial commitment this upcoming year. We ask everyone who can to consider increasing their pledge by 1$ per day at minimum, and we thank you in advance for your continued generosity.

We wish everyone a blessed and joyful advent season, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Daniel 3.26,27.
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians 3:4-11.

Brethren, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all.

Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

11th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 14:16-24

The Lord said this parable: "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and there is still room.' And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. For many are called, but few are chosen.'"

11th Sunday of Luke

Saints and Feasts

Forefathers
December 11

11th Sunday of Luke

On the Sunday that occurs on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we commemorate Christ's forefathers according to the flesh, both those that came before the Law, and those that lived after the giving of the Law.

Special commemoration is made of the Patriarch Abraham, to whom the promise was first given, when God said to him, "In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed" (Gen. 22:18). This promise was given some two thousand years before Christ, when Abraham was seventy-five years of age. God called him and commanded him to forsake his country, parents, and kinsmen, and to depart to the land of the Canaanites. When he arrived there, God told him, "I will give this land to thy seed" (Gen. 12:7); for this cause, that land was called the "Promised Land," which later became the country of the Hebrew people, and which is also called Palestine by the historians. There, after the passage of twenty-four years, Abraham received God's law concerning circumcision. In the one hundredth year of his life, when Sarah was in her ninetieth year, they became the parents of Isaac. Having lived 175 years altogether, he reposed in peace, a venerable elder full of days.
