Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

O Lord by Your sacred Cross You abolished death, and granted unto the thief blessed paradise. The Myrrh-bearers ceased lamenting and turned to joy. The apostles did preach the Good News at Your command, that You had risen from the dead O Christ Our God, bestowing Your mercy upon the world ever more.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Holy Cross in the First Mode

Save O Lord, O Lord Your people, and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to the faithful against the adversaries of the Faith, and protect Your people through Your Holy Cross, Your Holy Cross.

Apolytikion for Great Martyr Euphemia in the Third Mode

O Euphemia, Christ's comely virgin, thou didst fill the Orthodox with gladness and didst cover with shame all the heretics; for at the holy Fourth Council in Chalcedon, thou didst confirm what the Fathers decreed aright. O all-glorious Great Martyr, do thou entreat Christ God that His great mercy may be granted unto us.

Apolytikion of the Annunciation in the Fourth Mode

Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the mystery of the ages. O the Son of God becomes on this day the Virgin’s Son and Gabriel proclaims this gift from God. Together with him we cry out to the Theotokos singing: Hail to you who are filled with grace. The Lord is with you.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Grave Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Sunday after Holy Cross

Eikona the widely acclaimed Orthodox vocal trio is coming for a very rare visit to the east coast of the United States.  This dynamic, professional 3 sister singing group come from the west coast and are singing there in Orthodox church circles all over the western part of the country.  With 11 recorded CD’s their music is widely available and has helped spread awareness of their talented and spiritual interpretation of Byzantine chant.  Eikona is routinely featured on Ancient Faith radio’s music channel.
Eikona’s visit to Annunciation Church is likely to be a once in a lifetime opportunity to share in their inspiring interpretation of the music of our faith in a live concert.  This is an event that is priced so we cover the cost of bringing this concert to our church.  It is not a fund raising event, but it would be great if all tickets are sold so we cover all the costs of this Eikona weekend.
You can get tickets reserved for you by speaking to any member of the choir or Fr. Costin.  It is only a few weeks away on Saturday, September 22 at 7 PM in our church sanctuary.

Our 100th year  has a very busy action-packed weekend in September! NEEDED:  Backpacks for Foster Kids-  Now that our children have all gone back to school, filled their backpacks with school supplies and had the backpacks blessed in our church, it is time to think about the kids out there who are in the foster care system and may not have a backpack or school supplies – we can all help.  Children enter the foster care system at all times of the year, so there is always a need for school backpacks.

We are appealing to every family in the parish to participate in this backpack project.  One completed backpack per family.  Involve the children in making the decisions about the contents for the backpack.  We will ask you to add an item or two each month from now to the end of January.  Don’t rush out and do this all at once.  This way your family works together for an extended period of time building the habit of helping others in need.   Remember to offer a family prayer for the child who will receive the backpack.

Saint Basil’s Ministries has set up a backpack station in the Narthex right next to the on-going food pantry collection station.  Here is how families can help to sponsor a backpack for one child:

This will be an ongoing family ministry project from now until the end of January.  Each month we will publish a short “backpack TO DO list.

SEPTEMBER BACKPACK CHALLENGE

Decide the age and gender of the child you would like to help

  1. Get a backpack for this child.  Can be new or used in good condition
  2. Buy school supplies that you feel are appropriate for this child (get your children involved with choosing the school supplies for the backpack.

Can’t take on a complete backpack?  You can donate single items at the Backpack Station in the Narthex.  Everything collected will help a child in need.  Donations can be made to Saint Basil’s Ministries to support this project.  Please write Foster Care in the memo line.

We thank everyone for helping children in need through our Backpack Ministry Project.
