Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

When the angelic powers appeared at your tomb and those who guarded You became as though dead, and standing by Your sepulchre was Mary seeking Your pure and sacred body. Apolytikion of the Annunciation in the Fourth Mode

Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the mystery of the ages. O the Son of God becomes on this day the Virgin’s Son and Gabriel proclaims this gift from God. Together with him we cry out to the Theotokos singing: Hail to you who are filled with grace. The Lord is with you.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Second Mode

O Christ our God, upon fulfilling Your dispensation for our sake, You ascended in Glory, uniting the earthly with the heavenly. You were never separate but remained inseparable, and cried out to those who love You, "I am with you and no one is against you."

Fathers of the 1st Council

The heresiarch Arius was a Libyan by race and a protopresbyter of the Church of Alexandria. In 315, he began to blaspheme against the Son and Word of God, saying that He is not true God, consubstantial with the Father, but is rather a work and creation, alien to the essence and glory of the Father, and that there was a time when He was not. This frightful blasphemy shook the faithful of Alexandria. Alexander, his Archbishop, after trying in vain to correct him through admonitions, cut him off from communion and finally in a local council deposed him in the year 321. Yet neither did the blasphemer wish to be corrected, nor did he cease sowing the deadly tares of his heretical teachings; but writing to the bishops of other cities, Arius and his followers requested that his doctrine be examined, and if it were unsound, that the correct teaching be declared to him. By this means, his heresy became universally known and won many supporters, so that the whole Church was soon in an uproar.

Therefore, moved by divine zeal, the first Christian Sovereign, Saint Constantine the Great, the equal to the Apostles, summoned the renowned First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, a city of Bithynia. It was there that the shepherds and teachers of the Church of Christ gathered from all regions in the year 325. All of them, with one mouth and one voice, declared that the Son and Word of God is one in essence with the Father, true God of true God, and they composed the holy Symbol of Faith up to the seventh article (since the remainder, beginning with "And in the Holy Spirit," was completed by the Second Ecumenical Council). Thus they anathematized the impious Arius of evil belief and those of like mind with him, and cut them off as rotten members from the whole body of the faithful.

Therefore, recognizing the divine Fathers as heralds of the Faith after the divine Apostles, the Church of Christ has appointed this present Sunday for their annual commemoration, in thanksgiving and unto the glory of God, unto their praise and honour, and unto the strengthening of the true Faith.

Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria

On this day we commemorate Saint Cyril's falling asleep. On January 18 we commemorate the occasion of the Saint's restoration to his see in Alexandria after he had suffered a brief exile because of the machinations of the Nestorians. Shortly thereafter the Third Ecumenical Council was convoked in Ephesus and the blasphemous doctrine of Nestorius was condemned. See January 18 for Saint Cyril's life and works.

After he established a number of monasteries and churches in his native Ireland, Saint Columba founded the renowned monastery of Iona, off the coast of Scotland. Having guided many in the path of salvation, reposed in peace in 597.

Righteous Father Cyril of Belozersk

Saint Cyril of Belozersk, a Muscovite born in 1337, was tonsured in the Simonov Monastery in Moscow where he was later made abbot. Renouncing this position, at a revelation from the Mother of God he set out for the wilderness of Belozersk (White Lake) to live the life of a hermit. Later, when others desiring to lead the monastic life had gathered under his direction, he founded the Monastery of Belozersk. Throughout his life he had a very great reverence for the wonderworker, and was adorned with all the vitues, above all humility. Once, through the working of the enemy, one of his monks conceived an unendurable hatred for him; after being tormented by it for a whole year, he finally decided to reveal it to Cyril. When the monk was overcome with grief and shame at his malice towards such a venerable man, Cyril comforted him, affectionately telling him, "All the others are in error concerning me; only you have perceived my unworthiness," and forgiving him, sent him away in peace. Saint Cyril reposed on this day in 1427 at the age of ninety.

IN THOSE DAYS, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesos, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletos he sent to Ephesos and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. "I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. Sunday School Graduation:  today at the conclusion of the service we will have the Sunday School end of the year ceremony, including scolarship awards.  We will bless the Sunday School Centennial project and we will then enjoy a barbeque in front of the church.  You are encouraged to bring your own meat or sides.  A big thank you for our dedicated Sunday School teachers!

Saturday of Souls:  we will offer a General Trisagion this coming Saturday (June 16) at 10am.  If you submitted your list during Lent, you do not need to re-submit it.  Please bring a small koliva if you can.

Clergy Laity Award Dinner - Archbishop Dimitrios special guest The Clergy-Laity Award dinner will be held today, starting at 5 pm, at Lombardo’s, 6 Billings St., in Randolph, MA.  $75 pp.  We can also arrange a car pool, if there is interest.

We just learned that Archbishop Dimitrios will join us as the special honoree.  It's a great opportunity for us to thank him and say goodbye. 

This year's recipient, Andrea Jones, is truly a cornerstone member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Newburyport, MA.  Devout and knowledgeable in our faith, always reliable, going ‘above and beyond’, are but a few words used to describe Andrea.  She was married into the Greek Orthodox Faith 31 years ago, when she wed her beloved, and recently deceased, husband Bill, in 1988, at the Annunciation in Newburyport.  They raised two lovely daughters, Georgia and Eleni.  Andrea fondly recalls attending her first service in our faith, the Sunday of Orthodoxy.  Annunciation recently celebrated it’s Centennial Year, and with Andrea serving as our 100th Anniversary Chair, it was a phenomenal celebration!  Each month we held a uniquely beautiful and moving event, tied to an Orthodox theme.  Due to Andrea’s organizational skills, drive, and passion for perfection – each monthly event was wonderfully orchestrated, and celebrated by all Parishioners, past and present.  She even found time that year to organize and prepare a hardbound 100th Anniversary cookbook and offer cooking classes!  

Andrea has taught, and continues to teach, Sunday School for 20+ years.  In addition to educating our youth in the religious tenets of our faith, Andrea has also instituted a ‘shadowing’ program, training our young people to be the next generation of Church leaders.  The students are allowed to perform some of the functions of, for example, the Parish Council members – an initiative enjoyed and appreciated by all participants.  

Amongst her very long list of accomplishments are Parish Council Secretary for two terms;  ‘Coffee Fellowship Hour Coordinator’ for 5+ years;  organizer of ‘St. Basil’s Tea’, a philanthropic fundraiser, since it’s inception 3 years ago;  Greek Food Festival kitchen manager and workshop leader.

We proudly applaud and appreciate Andrea Jones, as a strong ‘pillar’ of our Church! 

Greek Food Festival next meeting is Monday, June 10th at 6:30pm in the Klidaris Conference Room.  Sponsorship letters and rates for the GFF Program are available in the Narthex and in the electronic bulletin.  These letters are available electronically to customize as best to appeal to your donors.  The program coordinator has received not input/ads/sponsorships so she is understanding why the program is not completed until the very last minuet - ever.  Let's make an exception this year and get the info in as soon as humanly possible.

Thanks to all our very hardworking volunteers, we were able to successfully complete  40 pans of pastitsio by late afternoon, an amazing task!  I am so very thankful and appreciative of the dozen people who all came together to make this so successful. You all made the best team anyone could hope for.  My special thanks of appreciation to Charlie and Daphne who worked extremely hard as team leaders. We hope the tasty results put a smile on our patrons faces at the GFF.

And thank you to Melinda Patrick, Siroun, Gina, Ellen and Fr. Costin for rolling up the vegan grape leaves a relatively new offering, just the third year for our GFF.  We will be putting the leaves in their individual containers on Sunday. These are sold cold and prepackaged in servings of 5 each for the same cost as the hot meat stuffed grape leaves.

Thank you, Friends of Fellowship, for the cake, Danish, brownies and Kouroulakia on May 26th.   I sincerely apologize that I cannot thank everyone by name, but I have somehow misplaced the email string.  Please know that your generosity is much appreciated.

Sunday, June 9th we are celebrating our Sunday School graduates with a potluck picnic.  Our first picnic in the Courtyard was in 2018 as part of our 100thAnniversary Celebration and we enjoyed it so much we decided to make it a tradition.  Thank you to the Men’s Club for manning the grills.  Bring along anything you would like to grill!  There will be a table set up for side dishes to share if you would like to contribute.

Thank you to Chathy Chadwick for providing the dinnerware and the hotdogs for our celebration and to Cathy and Trish Yanakakis for providind desserts in memory of Cathy's beloved mother.
