Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Second Mode. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9.

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise --whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Gospel Reading

5th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 16:19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

Saints and Feasts

Unmercenaries
November 01

Cosmas and Damian the Holy Unmercenaries of Asia, and their mother Theodota

These Saints were from Asia (that is, Asia Minor). After the death of their father, their Christ-loving mother Theodota reared them in piety and in all manner of virtue, and had them instructed in every science, especially that of medicine. This became their vocation, and they went about healing every illness and malady, bestowing healing freely on both men and beasts alike; because of this, they are called "Unmercenaries." And thus, having completed the course of their life, they reposed in peace.

Feed the Hungry Ministry

Thank you to our GOYA who gathered last week to make sandwiches for Dorothy Day in our Church Hall. This is an ongoing ministry that will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Youth Safety Program

We are very grateful for all of our wonderful youth volunteers! The protection of our youth is of the utmost importance to our Assumption family and the greater Orthodox Church. In order to create ministry environments that are physically and spiritually safe and healthy, new policies for the safety of children and youth have been approved for Youth Ministry Programs and Events across the entire Archdiocese.

The policies mandate two basic things. 1. Only registered Youth Workers can participate in Youth Ministry Programs and Events. 2. Youth Workers must report all Abuse and Suspected Abuse, as well as other violations of the Policies.

Therefore, we are asking everyone involved in the mentoring of our children to please complete their online training so we can resume our youth programs and be in compliance with the Archdiocese.

We need ALL of our Clergy, Pastoral Assistants, Administration, Youth Directors, Sunday School Teachers, Youth Greek School Teachers, Athletic Program Volunteers, Music Program Volunteers, Greek Dance Instructors and Volunteers, and any parent who may occasionally help-out, to become a certified Youth Worker.

If you need help recovering your login credentials, please email: office@agoc.us.

Celebrating Philoptochos Name Day. Χρόνια πολλά! We are excited to celebrate Philoptochos Name Day today.

November 1 is the Feast Day of Saints Cosmas and Damianos the Unmercaneries (Άγιοι Ανάργυροι), the patron saints of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Cosmas and Damianos were born of wealthy parents and educated in the best schools receiving degrees in medicine. They were apostles of Christ and physicians of both the body and soul, who pledged never to accept payment of any kind for their services (Ανάργυρος in Greek).
They healed thousands through the miracle of prayer and medicine. Ladies Philoptochos Society members strive to make a difference in the lives of others, following the example of our patron saints. The word philoptochos is the compound Greek word, “Philos/φίλος” and “Ptochos/πτωχός” which mean “friend of the poor.”

Light-a-Candle

Light a Candle and Say a Prayer at Assumption

“It is impossible to imagine an Orthodox church in which candles are not lit.” (Blessed Simeon of Thessalonica, 15th Century)

Lighting a candle in the Narthex is one of the first things many people do upon entering an Orthodox Church. This act symbolizes many things. For some, it is an offering of prayer for one’s personal needs or that of a family member or friend. Others light candles and pray for protection, safety, and courage to live this life without fear.

Lighting candles is an important part of our faith and we know that it has been - and continues to be - challenging for some to be unable to pray and light candles inside the church over the past year.

We are now pleased to offer AGOC parishioners the option to light a candle when you are unable to attend in-person services. Should you wish to light a candle, a member of the Parish Council will be happy to do so for you during services. Please use this link: https://agocdanbury.square.site/
