Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Tone

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Martyrs Adrian and Natalie in the 3rd Tone

You forsook the ways and false religion of your ancestors, for you considered the saving faith to be wealth irremovable. And as you followed the steps of the Lord of all, you were enriched by the gifts of His grace divine. Glorious Adrian, beseech Christ God fervently, entreating Him to save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Tone

Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility's stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mortality's ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, "The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life."

The Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalie

The holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalie confessed the Christian Faith during the reign of Maximian, in Nicomedia, in the year 298. Adrian was a pagan; witnessing the valor of the Martyrs, and the fervent faith with which they suffered their torments, he also declared himself a Christian and was imprisoned. When this was told to his wife Natalie, who was secretly a believer, she visited him in prison and encouraged him in his sufferings. Saint Adrian's hands and feet were placed on an anvil and broken off with a hammer; he died in his torments. His blessed wife recovered part of his holy relics and took it to Argyropolis near Byzantium, and reposed in peace soon after.

Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir

In all probability, the icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir was painted in Constantinople. In the twelfth century, Patriarch Luke Chrysoberges sent it to Kiev to Great Prince Yuri Dolgruky. The icon was kept in the convent at Vyshgorod, whence the holy Prince Andrew of Bogoliubovo brought it to Vladimir. The icon is one of the most venerated in Russia, having been carried by princes in military campaigns, prayed before by rulers for the welfare of the people, and flocked to by the faithful of all walks of life. At the election of the metropolitans and patriarchs, the names of the candidates were placed before this holy icon, and after prayer, the lot chosen; Patriarch Tikhon the Confessor was elected this way. The icon is celebrated also on June 23 and May 21, the last feast being established to commemorate the deliverance of Moscow in 1521 from the onslaught of the Tartar Khan Makhmet-Girei.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 4th Tone. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 16:13-24.

Brethren, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Gospel Reading

13th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 21:33-42

The Lord said this parable, "There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?'"

Parish News

A Word from Fr. John:

“For the way of all those who see is single and upward, illuminated by the heavenly light, but the ways of those who do not see are many, dark, and divergent. The one leads to the kingdom of heaven, uniting man to God, while the others lead down to death, separating man from God. Thus, it is necessary for you and for all who are concerned about their salvation to make your way by faith, without deviation, surely and resolutely; lest, in slacking, you remain in gross desires, or, erring, wander far from the right path….

So, faith procures this for us, as the elders, the disciples of the apostles, have handed down to us: firstly, it exhorts us to remember that we have received baptism for the remission of sins, in the name of God the Father, and in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was incarnate, and died, and was raised, and in the Holy Spirit of God; and that this baptism is the seal of eternal life and rebirth unto God, that we may no longer be sons of mortal men, but of the eternal and everlasting God.…”

            – St. Irenaeus (Eirenaios) of Lyons, On the Apostolic Preaching, about A.D. 180-200

Special Prayer Requests:  We pray for mercy, life, peace, and healing of Jim Manos (at Moultrie Creek Nursing & Rehab Center), Chresanthe Lemieux, Jane Anderson, Betty & Fred Day, Despina Xynidis, George P. Nichols, JoAnne Long, our parish, those we serve, the Sunday School teachers and students, and our two missionary families: Dn. Stephanos, Dka. Alexandria & Moses Ritsi serving Albania; and Michael Lisa & Liam Colburn serving translators worldwide. We also pray for the newly reposed Steve Sarris, who passed from this life on August 13th. May his memory be eternal!

Also, Father Michael Byars, the priest at Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Daytona, suffered the loss of his house when it burned down last Sunday afternoon. The family is safe but they did lose their pets in the blaze. They have lodging and are thankful to God for his mercy and grace.

Father Michael asked that we refrain from calling or texting him while they are busy for the next few days sorting out the tragedy that has befallen them. You can email him at fathermichaelbyars@gmail.com but it may be a while before he is able to answer. The church does have a relief fund and way to donate set up on their website: https://www.holycrossoc.org/

Please keep Father Michael, Khouria Denise, and their family in your prayers.

Sunday, September 2nd – One-Year Memorial for Fred Allen

Sunday School Begins September 9th: September 9th will be the first day of the 2018/19 Sunday School year!  We must have a registration form for every child, turned in to either Carman Gaetanos or Presbytera Renee Ritsi.  The form is included in the digital weekly bulletin, and copies are in the narthex.

We ask that the community allow the students and their teachers to be the first to receive Holy Communion, so that they may immediately head to class.  In all of our work and with all of our plans for the year, we recognize that the only way for what we do to be truly effective is if we have the support of YOU, our wonderful Church Family.  Together we will share Christ’s message of love with the children of our parish and with those around us.  Thank you.  Again, we welcome all of our youth back to Sunday School on September 9th.

Weekly Offering:  You can decide how much you might contribute to support this church’s ministry.  Your gift goes to ensuring that our church is open and accessible to all who seek her comfort.  These donations are very important to the vitality of our parish.  Your offering can be made at the collection basket as you exit the service.

The New Panagia Chapel to receive the Miraculous Panagia Vimatarissa Icon September 29th at 11 a.m.: Join in procession of the miraculous icon into the new Panagia Chapel at the Diakonia Center, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta with the Monks of Vatopaidi on Mount Athos, and Clergy of the Metropolis of Atlanta. All will venerate the miraculous icon of our Lady, offer glory to our God and Creator, and thank those who made this day possible while enjoying the fellowship of our Metropolis of Atlanta family. Please RSVP with this link and call Ethel Gjerde 404-634-9345 with any questions.  In addition, St. Demetrios Church in Daytona is sponsoring a two-day pilgrimage package (see flyer in hall).

The miracle of this icon was eventually revealed in a shallow well of the monastery. There, around 910 AD, the monk who served as the Caretaker of the Altar (Vimatarissa in Greek) secretly hid the icon just before being taken prisoner by Arab raiders looting and leaving in ruins the monastery.  70 years later, he was released and returned to the monastery, unknown to the new monks who rebuilt the monastery. He told them how he hid the sacred icon and, there in the shallow well, stood on the water, the icon, the cross, and the lit candle.
